Squash is definitely one of the vegetables I really love. I can simply boil it, add some seasoning, and that’s already enough for me to enjoy as a meal. I actually prefer squash when it is very soft because it can also be made into squash soup. For me, that is already super delicious!

And of course, cucumber should never be left out! When I was still working an 8-to-5 job, cucumber was one of my favorite snacks. I had an officemate who also loved snacking on cucumber, so whenever I brought some to the office, I would invite her to the pantry so we could eat cucumber together, especially when they were extra crunchy. So simple, but super delicious!

I once told my mom that I wanted us to grow squash and cucumber in our garden. I thought it would be nice to just harvest my favorite vegetables from our own garden instead of buying them from the market. But my mom didn’t seem interested in planting those two, so I eventually forgot about it.

Then last week, she mentioned that she had seen squash and cucumber seeds at the store where she usually buys seeds. I was so happy because maybe she was finally interested in growing them too. And yesterday, we finally bought the seeds! Now, we finally have squash and cucumber seeds ready for our garden.

I’m really happy that we finally have the seeds. There are only two stores near us where we usually buy seeds, Metro Supermarket and Planters. I haven’t tried buying seeds online yet. Since Metro didn’t have squash and cucumber seeds available, we decided to buy them from Planters instead.

This morning, my mom already sowed the squash and cucumber seeds. I’m hoping they will grow just like our other vegetables that have given us plenty of harvests. There’s also a strong El Niño coming, so I really hope these little seeds will survive the heat and eventually give us a good harvest.

For now, we’ll just wait, take care of them, and see how they grow. It would be so satisfying to someday walk into the garden, pick a fresh cucumber for a snack, or harvest some squash for soup, knowing that we grew them ourselves.

Happy Friday everyone! It's been awhile since I've taken some pictures in the backyard. Probably the prettiest plant I have in bloom right now is this Purple Dome New England Aster. Gorgeous purple flowers everywhere and the bees love them! The bloom in the fall every year, and they came with the house when I bought it. I had considered replacing them until I saw them bloom the first time and they were keepers after that!

Unfortunately, this is on the neglected side of the house with the air conditioning units so it tends to get a lot of overgrown grass. This used to be an orange orchard, and the old orchard grass just keeps on growing no matter how hard I try to get rid of it! lol

Tomatoes

My tomatoes and peppers have been the stars of my backyard this year. There are more tomatoes to be picked every couple of days now. I picked a giant bag of cherry tomatoes yesterday so most of what you see are the unripe ones remaining. Give them a few days and I'll have another load to harvest!

The Roma hybrid which is a San Marzano is probably the best producer. They taste great and have produced so many I've had to bottle a few batches of them already. It looks like there are a few more to get picked today!

Peppers

This year I only grew jalapenos and shishito peppers. The jalapenos are a hybrid called La Bomba II, very good with thick walls and some very nice heat to them. I recently shared a post of roasting shishitos and bottling them as well. Below are some of my shishito plants:

And some of my jalapenos:

I've had a hard time keeping up with bottling the jalapenos, they just keep growing more so fast... A good problem to have!

Broccolini

This is a hybrid of broccoli with Chinese broccoli developed in Japan around 30 years ago. It is more tender with smaller florets, but tastes really good. The real advantage is it grows in warmer climates than regular broccoli, and southern California is certainly warmer than broccoli would like. But my broccolini plants are very happy here!

I harvested a bunch yesterday so you can see where I cut off what I cultivated and the new shoots coming up for my next harvest in a week or so. It grows fast!

Basil

My basil continues to be happy, growing like crazy! It smells great!

Normally this time of year I like talking long walks in the late afternoon, but have been sidelined with some Achilles tendonitis. So I'm pretty limited to just the backyard right now! You make the best of it, it's all you can do I suppose...

That will do it for me this Friday, please feel free to leave any comments or questions below. And as always, thank you for all of your support, I really do appreciate it! Have a great weekend everyone!

Hello everyone,

My mother has always loved flowering plants. Even when I was younger, I remember how she liked having flowers around our house. She would look for plants that could grow well in our place and slowly add them to our garden.

One of the plants that became special to her is the anthurium.

She discovered that anthurium is growing in our area. It grows well here, and it does not need too much care. Because of this, my mother started planting more of them. At first, she only wanted to grow flowers that she could bring to church every Sunday.

She did not want to keep buying flowers. She thought, if we can grow them ourselves, we can simply pick the beautiful flowers from our garden and bring them to church. That simple idea became the beginning of her love for anthuriums.

As time passed, her collection slowly became bigger.

For me, it is nice to see how these plants grow around our home. Some are still small, while others are already big and producing many flowers. Sometimes, I help my mother check the plants and look at which ones already have flowers ready to pick.

What I like most about anthurium is that it is not a very demanding plant. It can live even if we do not give it too much attention. Of course, it still needs proper care, water, and a good place to grow, but compared to some other flowering plants, I find it easier to maintain.

It is also a practical plant for us. When there are many flowers, my mother can use them for church, decorate our home, give some to family and friends, or sell some to people who like anthuriums.

I also learned from my mother that gardening does not always have to start with a big plan. Sometimes, it starts with one small plant and a simple reason.

For my mother, it started because she wanted to bring flowers to church every Sunday. For me, it became a beautiful reminder of how much she enjoys taking care of plants.

Whenever I see her anthurium garden blooming, I feel happy because it is something she started with love. The flowers may be simple, but behind every plant is her time, patience, and enjoyment.

This is my mother's little anthurium garden, and I am happy to see how her simple love for flowers continues to grow.

Thank you for reading my story. The lead photo was edited in Canva.

Have a nice day!

After going through many things, starting with caring for cauliflower from seed, I finally harvested my cauliflower. After about three months, the cauliflower flowered for two weeks, then the cauliflower developed very rapidly. Its growth was quite rapid, and day by day, I watched the flowers grow larger.

Since this was my first time growing cauliflower, I began to research the internet to find the right harvest time. Finally, last Sunday afternoon, I decided to harvest it. Cauliflower should be harvested early, before the flowers open; they say it will be a little tougher and have a different flavor. Another sign that the cauliflower is ready to harvest is when the flowers have widened slightly, meaning they are no longer so dense.

The afternoon weather was bright, and the sunlight was very bright. I asked my husband to capture this precious moment. He took a photo of me from a distance while I harvested. It was a very enjoyable afternoon, and I was so happy, after all, after three months of caring for this cauliflower.

Before harvesting, I remove the leaves first. I do not discard them at all; instead, I place them at the base of the chili plants to serve as natural fertilizer. Remember, in gardening, organic waste—such as any kind of leaf debris—can make excellent natural fertilizer that enriches the soil with nutrients, helping the plants thrive.

After harvesting, we left the cauliflower stalks and let them sprout. I plan to try using the shoots for new seeds later.

I learned this from a relative of mine; she said the regrown shoots can be planted. So, she said we won't have to worry about growing them from seed.

Then I left the cauliflower in the basket for a while, then took some cling film to wrap it and store it in the refrigerator. Since I wasn't cooking today, this storage method was very practical and allowed the vegetables to last longer.

After harvesting the cauliflower, I left one stalk behind; it was still very small, so I left it alone. Growing larger than the one I harvested will probably take some time next week. I'll use up these three heads first for cooking. You can see my cauliflower cooking log later in my post, as I haven't had time to do it yet.

Not hardcore rain, but light sprinkling in the afternoon and a little bit at night. Considering that the páramo of Mamá Cotacachi, where most of our drinking water is filtered through vegetation, was burned during the hardcore fire season, that kind of rain is just what we need. Doesn't cause erosion, but revives the grass roots up on the mountain again, which then retain the earth and make the feared erosion a little less likely. Hope.

For months, the garden was nothing. Just nothing growing. A few weeds here and there, but not enough to have Jesús, my gardener, come more than once a month. And that basically just to keep him in the loop.

Plagues spread, but I was able to get rid of them by cleaning up the onions regularly. Those are funny bugs - they pain your hand purple when you squeeze them. The pea pods dried up in the end, giving seeds for the next generation that I'm about to set into the earth these days.

Good thing about the drought was that all the weeds dried up quickly, without shooting more roots. I can throw those on the compost now, and hopefully they won't just re-hydrate and grow again. Which is usually the case in Ecuador, every plant has the ability of spontaneous self-reviving. Both good and bad.

Trying to not waste water, I only watered the garden once a week. Even though the soil is still bad. But the plants that I care about have already good, deep roots, so they're fine. And the rest I can quickly re-grow. If they don't do it spontaneously. The birds certainly loved the sprinklers. Every time I put them on, they came to take baths and play and have fun.

The purple basil had a blast, too. I wonder if it will ever grow seeds. We have another purple basil around, which I haven't taken out of the pot yet, because I wanted to wait for the raining season. So maybe we'll have purple basil all over the place, soon?

I had planted 5 Rocoto-Chili plants a month before the rains stopped, and they all made it through, already bringing some fruits. But it's noticeable that they don't appreciate the soil too much. Usually, they have a lot of fruits. These have one here, another there. Enough to dry up and make into powder. Really, really hot powder. Rocoto is among the hottest I've eaten. But hey, I've never been to Asia, so... Once I had Carolina Reaper. That was an experience...

As it starts, so it ends. I hope these will produce a lot of seeds and auto-propagate. They're among my favorites, edible, too, if I'm not mistaken, so Danny will love them for his dishes. And they make pretty in vases upon the tables, too. I will have to work on the soil now that the rains have started. The compost didn't do much during dry season, but now, it should turn into dirt within 2-3 months. And the grass will grow to keep providing. And Geovanny will bring me organic waste from other gardens to feed the compost. And I have so many seedlings to plant! And seeds! Finally...

I like raining season. A new start.

------‐--------------‐-----------------------------------------------------
Hello, plant-loving friends!
Today I want to show you the progress of one of my garden's favorites: my Desert Rose (Adenium obesum). I've been taking care of it for a while now, and this blooming cycle caught me by surprise with some very special details.

As you can see in the image above, the caudex (the thick trunk at the base) has taken on a swollen shape with a lot of personality. That's one of the things I love most about Adeniums: no two are alike, each plant sculpts its own unique shape as it grows.
Plus, it contrasts beautifully with its white flowers featuring soft yellow centers, alongside its vibrant green leaves.

But the real surprise this season wasn't just the flowers... look at what I found among its branches!

A massive seed pod! In the photo, I placed my hand next to it so you can appreciate its real size. This is the first time it has produced such a long and thick pod, so I'm excited to see how it matures.

Beautiful life💚

The hydroponics set we purchased months ago came with some freebies, tiny packets of veggie seeds (e.g., Green Ice, Kangkong, and Romaine). I also bought a few more. So earlier this week (Monday), I harvested the second batch of lettuce from the grow box and replaced them with the remaining seedlings.

The leaves were already yellowing as they had been on the tray since August. Alas, they are now in the net cups, taking nutrients from the solution underneath them.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/23tmSXW7VQjbWD7VT3fqJ5XEDKecnFgx55fjrjWCda2HUQKrmsuPbepofJqUbhwbkbMoz.jpg

After that, I started sowing the other seeds—Water Spinach (Upland Kangkong) and Green Ice (Green Rapid Lettuce, per the label).

The first step was preparing the seedling tray for the Kangkong. 30 seeds, according to the packet label, so half of a tray was enough (it has 32 holes). Filled the tray with coco dust, poked small holes for the seeds, and watered the whole tray with a spray bottle (just enough to keep the soil moist).

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/Eonk4Bq16HiyomvDYKRkbN4AZozFQGCzipsVHgAjDhaqFdXutpcEMU4ua9zC8HDatNX.jpg

Then finally dropped one seed in each hole. I honestly didn't know Water Spinach seeds were this big. But I was glad, 'coz I didn't need to use eyeglasses to see and pick them.😁

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/23yTx6kYMudVWGQaaNRBWVtyNPgmjCzsHH7KEePABtwrHSkAANWDDaDDg75Q3rjYzRcpd.jpeg

It turned out the packet had 32 seeds. Some bonus, eh! So every hole in the tray had a seed. Great! I even used the label as the tray's lil flag, haha! There, all set.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/Eoc7Tb7UQMC3AAXfBguZEMnMZ4Sbpj7BnYic8ikPk1MVGV7BdW3Lq9syUeCFVCJQQRq.jpg

Next was the green ice, and I used a separate seeding tray. I thought of sowing three trays, but decided to do one first, then another after two weeks, and the third two weeks thereafter, so they don't germinate and mature at the same time. They are meant for personal consumption, so being able to harvest 3-5 heads a day would be a joy.

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/23w2oGpckvHfy8FAaSXT9wbGrnEYpsjtJZ6ujEYZZXKvJMuZUjndRiPmtZS9aBvnbjJNm.jpg

The seeds were way too small; I could barely see them with my already poor eyesight. My fingers picked several each time, and I don't know how many dropped into each hole, but we will see when they germinate.

The label indicated the germination period is 2-3 days. Really quick, nice!

https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/ifarmgirl/23wWrwaztu6LYc99PzLKtEBJz3SeBGBf9v5zvs75mFjMCTFxFfxAtVHwNQB7DAt8pE4dE.jpg

Meanwhile, I found several packets of Sweet Million Tomatoes (from the UK) when checking a box from the Lil Kingdom. They were forgotten and had already expired based on their labels (supposed to be sown by 2024 and 2025), but here they are, still in their little packs. Yikes!

But I'll still try to sow some if they will germinate. Not very soon, though. I'm thinking about building (or buying) a stand for the seeding trays, not putting them on top of crates, which take more space.

Will see how it goes next week, as we are now in BC (came home here after attending my sister's brother-in-law's final night's wake). We might spend a few more days here, and we won't be back to DD until Sunday afternoon.

Counting the days in my head made me wonder if the Kangkong and Green Ice are already peeking through the trays since today is the 4th day since sowing. I'm already excited! I do hope Brando won't forget to water them, or the soil will dry out, and they will wilt.

It really saddens me to see how the topocho plantain plants are scorched by the relentless sun. I always make sure to give them some water so they don't die.

They are incredibly resilient; despite this natural adversity—since there has been absolutely no rain this year and the heat grows more intense by the day—they have still managed to produce bunches, though it is a real struggle for them to reach full maturity. Here you can see what some of them look like

Warm greetings all! 😁🙏💚✨🤙

I seriously can't believe that it's already October, and that we only have just under three months until we usher in 2027. A whole lot of interesting things have happened within the past 3/4 of 2026, and even with the notable challenges that Hive has been facing, I remained determined and focused in my building and growing, and in assisting and supporting the We Are Alive Tribe, and the greater Hive community, and I was thankfully able to make some huge strides in asset growth, especially in terms of my Hive Power, which will reach 37,000 before the end of this month. I'm sad that I had to sacrifice my nice chunk of HBD that was growing in savings to boost my HP so substantially, but it was worth it I think, and the extra HP has definitely come in handy.

The two most notable new and amazing things that came into my awareness in 2026, and that became primary components of my daily flow, are without a doubt Hermes Agent and Satsman. Both of them have been absolute game changers for me in their respective domains, which is exactly why I've been talking about them both so much in my posts over the past few weeks and months.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmbzweErP4nnAaNHqtJtmgvovptM2n3bkJzkMAUKc8QgNr/image.png)

We will be giving a new, taller pot to one of the larger Drosera plants. We have the moss that they need, no regular soil for these. We have perlite, and a slightly larger pot. This is my first of many repotting projects as the springtime weather starts to really activate these hungry plants.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmVwzmPUucxdwM4SEGaU2sj94DT4RzFwCQV2WijUP29Spc/image.png)

Mid-winter, this plant had no green. It just looked like a dead plant, as you see it but without the upper green part. Right now, many of my plants look that way and I will repot them as green reappears.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmPX3aQFP3yLyHvZnSWTGGvkfE5Cw9PJLuD5dUdTVvT1Xu/image.png)

I was setting up the new pot with perlite and moss at the bottom.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmW6vjWJMpA9KbupF3JphTN2CHRzUfJt6foZhHybQvkQbx/image.png)

But before we pull the larger plant out and repot it, we have another small issue to deal with.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmQKfmzm7GurR4iDYneyizyqyHhoJU2XPr2eT92c4wFLVX/image.png)

We take a minute and set up a little pot for the new baby plant.

We simply dip the tip of our long nose pliers into the dirt and gently squeeze where the root is...

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmdd7KkPsvD3cKVAdoPtQ1QFzCG9YjVs21qxVoGjtYmUtg/image.png)

...and lift out some moss with the entire plant,

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmcvejxrW1hXA5xi8MjiZDVdz1x9h7LXyno1qBBKmHGrNi/image.png)

...then we move it over to the small pot. This will be its home for the next year or two.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmVr92bfSAJ3NCxbtJpAuHhRgpmk3ioDSXuxT9EaDQeoX7/image.png)

Then Move the Adult Plant

Because this plant is well established for the last few years, I don't have to worry so much about disturbing the roots. When I have a rare or sensitive plant, I cut up the old pot and move it gently. You either have seen that method here or will see it again later in spring.

This one takes two hands. (no pictures of it happening). I just put one hand on the left and one hand on the right, and plunge my fingers down between the pot and the moss, and lift the plant, briefly inspect the roots, and then put it in the new pot.

Here is the aftermath.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmaQznR9HgVoN5XXrfANrenbRTgvpsw8qGekDFJTard8ZJ/image.png)

As you can see when I get this plant filled back to the top in order to cover all the roots slash branches that should be covered, it will already be at the top of the pot.

![image.png](https://images.hive.blog/DQmRp871Rs2LMgrV3XNvd6UBJd5L5DfP9CABpcyxAYT7fPm/image.png)

If this plant does well by the end of the season or maybe even mid-summer, I may put it into a larger pot.

So let's fill up this pot and then get it back with the others and a pan full of distilled water.

As I was refilling the moss up to the tops of the roots, I noticed that one of the leaves is a mutation, which is kind of strange. You don't usually get those on these plants. I don't think it makes the plant rare or worth more. It is kind of like a two headed sheep. The wool still works for making blankets. And this plant will still catch bugs using this deformity.

*shpagnum moss*

*labelling south*

And this is the first repot of the summer., I would like to remind you that carnivorous plants in general can only grow in mineral-free, nutrition-free soil. In other words, moss, specifically this kind.
