It is easy to throw a bad word when angry. Easy to curse when frustrrated. Easy to hide behinnd noise instead of sayying what really hurrts.

Being big and clever is hard.......

Big is staying respectfull when disrespecteed. Clever is findingg a word that healls instead of a word that wounnds.

Swear words get attention for one second. Then what? The air becomes heavier. The problem is still there. Nothing is solved.

But a calm word? A kind word? That changes rooms. That changes minds. That is real power.

Some people swear to look fearless....... But fearless peopplee do not need to prove anyything. Their confiddence is quiet.

Some people swear to look grown. But grown people know words have weight. They know language can build a bridge or burn it.

Swearing isn't big or clever...... It is just loud.

What is big and clever is grace under pressure. Control over tongue. Peace over pride.

Let others shout. Choose to speak.

The "target" must be hit with just one right idea.

![cliche_problems.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/wiseagent/23yx85NRNJrA6yhycv1ZWdairMofTjDP5HQYkn7nBNgUALJjJQiRkAiFzwdN9nKSpw7eg.png)

[Mantenlo Simple](https://mantenlosimple.com/2014/08/18/cliches-estereotipos-cine-p1/)

Speak badly of me, but speak of me. For years, the clichés used in movies have already become part of cinematic history because they carry fundamental weight in certain types of narrative structures, which certainly help not only to create a solid foundation for developing a story, but also help to create a visual and stylized identity (depending on what the essence of each project is). The fact is that, whether loved or not, they can bring "systemic" problems.

Perhaps, the most popular (and most recognizable, because it is more commonly used) is the repetition of standardized ideas that they carry. However, the blame falls much more on those who use them (and how these people use them) than on the clichés themselves. It is quite true that some clichés are so silly or even bad. On the other hand, depending on how they are used in movies, they can be important tools for constructing elements within the plot.

The dilemma here is how to balance this applicability of a narrative device (which may or may not be verbal or visual), because it is according to the quantity, intensity, and execution of the choices that they may - or may not - become a major headache for some screenwriters and directors. Every cinematic genre, over the years, has built its own clichés, and the way they have “evolved” through time is the merit of a small group.

Although it is almost impossible to attribute the merit of this matter to specific names, it is impossible to deny that the history of cinema was (in part) built by what clichés represent. Like any other device, clichés just need to be better chosen (and used) to work according to the atmosphere of the projects in which they are inserted. The problem isn't exactly them... Because they are just an accessory that is part of the whole.

Their essence is so strong that, with just a few seconds of a scene after its projection begins, a particular movie can easily be categorized by a large number of people. Therefore, if they are used the right way, a movie can easily become good in the eyes of the general public because this creates a kind of “bridge” between the fantastic side that is created by the combination of image and sound, and the realistic side that needs to buy into that whole idea.

The sun shines, but the water is still cold. In my book Ice Out, I wanted to capture this moment when the lake and the city of Duluth are still connected, but also starting to separate. The Aerial Lift Bridge answers the ships, its steel frame a reminder of the lake's power. June Tam, the protagonist, drives across the bridge on a sleet-covered day. The bridge is the first thing I put in, and it sets the tone for the rest of the story.

First published at sigridsong.neocities.org.

Gone Girl: A Look at That Girl We Believed We Knew Well [Film]

Source There is something particularly disturbing about Gone Girl that has little to do with the fact that Amy Dunne is capable of planning an elaborate disappearance, manipulating everyone around her, and turning her own life into a carefully constructed story.

There is something particularly disturbing about Gone Girl that has little to do with the fact that Amy Dunne is capable of planning an elaborate disappearance, manipulating everyone around her, and turning her own life into a carefully constructed story. What bothers me more is the possibility behind all of it: what happens when the person you thought you knew extremely well turns out to be someone you never actually knew? That is where David Fincher’s film becomes much more uncomfortable for me. Amy is fascinating as a character because she fits so neatly into the tradition of the female femme fatale: intelligent, controlled, calculating, sexually aware, emotionally manipulative, and apparently several steps ahead of everyone else. But the film is often discussed through the pleasure of watching her scheme, and I think that leaves something more disturbing slightly out of focus. The real nightmare is not simply that Amy is capable of doing these things. It is that someone like Amy could exist in your life while you remain completely convinced that you understand her.

What makes Amy so frightening is not her intelligence by itself. Plenty of fictional characters are intelligent. It is her ability to understand how other people perceive her and then deliberately construct herself around those expectations. She knows what a wife is supposed to look like, what a victim is supposed to sound like, what the public wants from a missing woman, and what the police expect from a grieving husband. She does not merely lie. She understands the structure of belief. That distinction matters to me because it moves the character beyond the usual “crazy woman” interpretation, which I find far too easy. Amy is not frightening because she is emotional or unstable. She is frightening because she can remain emotionally controlled while other people are reacting to the situation she designed. The performance is the point. And once that becomes clear, the idea of knowing someone becomes much less comforting.

I also think this is where Rosamund Pike’s performance becomes so important, because she makes Amy convincing in both directions. We see the woman everyone believes they know, and then we see the woman behind that construction. The unsettling part is that neither version feels completely fake. Amy has genuinely experienced disappointment, resentment, humiliation, boredom and anger. Her feelings are not necessarily invented. What she does with them is what becomes terrifying. That is psychologically more interesting to me than simply watching a villain execute an elaborate plan. I can understand why someone might feel betrayed by a marriage, frustrated by expectations, or furious about losing control of their own narrative. I cannot accept what Amy chooses to do with those feelings, but I do not need to reduce her to a monster in order to understand why she is dangerous. That is precisely what makes her so uncomfortable. She remains recognizably human while making choices that can become devastating for another person.

Fincher understands this distinction extremely well. He does not need to make Gone Girl into a conventional horror film because the horror is already contained in the relationships, the media spectacle, the marriage and the uncertainty surrounding perception. Nick is not simply fighting to prove his innocence. He is fighting against a version of himself that other people have already accepted. Amy understands that once a story becomes convincing enough, facts become secondary. That idea is one of the film’s sharpest elements, but what stays with me is the domestic dimension of it. Imagine discovering that the person beside you, the person whose habits you recognize, whose voice you know, whose routines you have shared for years, has been capable of constructing an entirely different reality without you noticing. At that point, disappointment is almost irrelevant. The problem becomes fear. You are no longer asking whether you love this person. You are asking whether you ever knew who you were living with.

That is what teachers used to say. And parents. And every adult who heard a kid drop a bad word to look cool.

But whyy do peopple swear at all?

Sometimes swearing is anger that could not find another way out..... Sometimes it is pain._Sometimes it is just habit.... A word that fills the gap when better words fail.

Swearing does not make a person big..... Shouting the loudest in a room never means winning the argumment. Real strength is calm.... Real cleverneess is choosingg words that hiit hardeer than insults.

Think about it.....,.The most powerful speeches in history had no swear words___They had truth, timing, and heart.

That does not mean swearing is evil. Words are just tools.____But like any tool, the valuee is in how you use it.A hammerr can build a house or breaak a window.

Maybe being big and clever is knowing when not to swear.........knowing that silence can be louder. That kindnness can be sharpper. That respect always sounds better than rage.

So swearing isn't big or clever.____ But choosing better words? That is.

IMAGE IS AI GENERATED

As children, many things told to us by our elders sounded perfectly logical, yet as we grew up, we realized they made no sense at all—especially the prohibitions.

When we were little, we implicitly trusted what our parents said. We would simply obey their orders and heed their warnings. Strangely enough, when we tell those same things to children today, they immediately push back with arguments of their own—or simply ignore the prohibitions entirely.

In Bali, there are many amusing childhood beliefs; what I’d like to share now are a few taboos regarding mealtime.

While eating, elders would always tell us to stay seated. I still remember what my grandmother used to say when I was little:

“Eka, don’t eat while standing up!”

“If you do, all the food you eat will go straight down to your legs and make them swell up.”

As a young child, I would immediately sit back down and continue eating.

Do you know what I imagined back then?

I pictured the rice I was eating sliding straight down to my legs without ever stopping in my stomach. Over time, my legs would grow massive, like a giant’s legs, while the rest of my body remained small as usual.

Hahaha... It was truly ridiculous.

Another mealtime taboo was: “Finish all your food, or else a black chicken will die.”

The elders would always say this whenever we were eating—especially if one of us wasn't finishing our meal. Upon hearing that, we would quickly get back to finishing our food.

I only realized how ridiculous that prohibition was once I started school. I remember a natural science lesson about the digestive system, where I learned that the food we eat is actually digested within the digestive tract. That was when I realized it was impossible for food entering the mouth to go straight to the feet.

The same went for the warning that a black chicken would die if we didn't finish our food. I started to question it when I realized our family didn't even own a black chicken back then. I began to think, "What does it matter if someone else's black chicken dies? After all, we don't have one."

Hahaha...

As time went by, a new thought occurred to me:

"Why would a black chicken die if we didn't finish our food?"

"Wouldn't the pet chickens go hungry if there were no leftovers?"

Yes, those were some of the funny things I believed as a child. Now that I have children of my own, I realize that those old taboos and warnings were simply ways for our elders to teach us better habits.

Instead of giving us logical reasons for why things should be done a certain way, they offered anecdotes.

It is only natural to sit down while eating, right? Yet, some children prefer to play or run around while they eat.

Finishing one's food teaches us to appreciate it and avoid waste—taking only what we need and what we can actually finish.

Unfortunately, when I try to apply the same approach with my own children, they couldn't care less. My three-year-old son is incredibly difficult to keep seated during meals; he insists on playing or wandering around while eating. He’ll even talk back, armed with all sorts of excuses.

What about you? What funny things did you believe as a kid?

While a lot of people may believe success has to do with technical knowledge, Dale argues in this book that personal and financial success is heavily driven by a man's personality, communication skills, and leadership. His fundamentals rest on a psychological insight that humans are creatures of emotions, pride, and vanity rather than logic. The core principles in this book hinge on moving away from self-centeredness and learning to view circumstances from other people's perspective.

The book is broken down into principles, all with lessons on how to handle people. One of the fundamental techniques provided by Dale in handling people is avoiding criticism and condemnation. He believes criticism puts people on the defensive, wounds their pride, and brings resentment. Another way he provided in handling people is by providing honest and sincere appreciation, and this is because humans possess a craving within them to feel important and valued. Talking about what they want and providing ways to achieve it could go a long way in handling people in a positive way.

In the second part of the book, he provided six ways to make people like you. One of them is to become genuinely interested in other people. Dale believes people only get connected when one shows genuine concern about them and not self. The second is smiling and remembering names; a lot of people may fail when it comes to remembering names, especially people like me. According to Dale, this is one way to make people like you. The others are: being a good listener, talking on the other person's interests, and making the other person feel important.

In winning people over, Dale outlines the following: avoid arguments, show respect for others, admit mistakes quickly, and as a leader, praise small achievements and ask questions instead of giving orders. If one has to say one thing about Dale Carnegie's book, it would be "making others feel important while giving little interest in yourself." Even though it works, a lot of people might assume this advice only encourages low self-esteem.

One thing that works in this book is the timeless psychology, focusing on human ego, appreciation, and empathy, which remain unchanged across eras, and the book gives engaging narratives. However, the criticism falls on the rise of surface-level application. If applied mechanically, techniques like heavy complimenting or eager listening can come across as manipulative or transactional. Carnegie explicitly warns against insincerity, but the line between genuine interest and strategic charm requires self-awareness.

How to Win Friends and Influence People is a foundational masterclass in emotional intelligence and active empathy. Rather than teaching manipulative tactics, its true power lies in encouraging a shift from self-absorbed thinking to active appreciation of the human needs in others.

To our precious baby boy Elijah, our first son...

(All photos are my own)

Since the age of 7, I dreamed of being a boy mom, and despite never discovering your gender during your pregnancy, I never once doubted that you were a boy.

Finding out that you no longer had a heartbeat, and that you had been gone for nearly a month while we were still thinking we were talking to you... I still have no words for that situation. Then to give birth to you, hold you in the palm of my hand, and find out that yes, you were a boy after all...

(Elijah's "first" birthday cake...)

I felt incredibly alone while coping with losing you, even while having our family around me. On the days where I felt like I was doing good, I would still find my thoughts preoccupied with you; especially the what could have beens of your life...

And yet, you have brought me closer to God 💛 Your loss made me realize that I need God in my life -- He is the only One who can carry me through the unimaginable. You completely changed me as a person, and especially as a mother -- I recognize how important it is to see your sisters as the gifts that they are.

Today, I am beyond blessed to be pregnant with your baby brother 🙏 God gave me the name Elliot, a variation of your name, so that I will carry you both for the rest of my life ❤️ But also, it is a reminder of how great our Father is. I give glory to Him for allowing me to be your mother every day, and I am eternally grateful to you for helping me find God 💛

I love you, Elijah... May the Lord continue to keep you safe in the embrace of His wings. Until we meet again 🪽...

The lanterns flicker in the forest dark
That light the fairy glades;
Gnomes and nymphs gather for a festive season.
Apple cider warm and pumpkin pies for good measure- they brought garlands for a reason
Stories told and sung in vexing verses
The sound so sweet and muddled
On the twisted tongues
Like silver tinkling bells
That ring announcing harvest rites
To gather once again and dance
Share the bounty of the land
With smiles, hugs, and kisses.

The poppies glowing red in remembrance
Of those who did not attend the feast;
For they sailed over the sea one day
So that gnomes and nymphs may live in peace.

In the night the fires flicker
And keep at bay the ghosts and ghouls,
Who trick or treat in frosty shadows
With moonlit damsels wearing masks
Summoning ethereal spirits
To haunt the grounds of the realm
Howling in the meadows.

Clouds parting in the mountain mist,
With bluer skies revealed
Where eagles swiftly glide
-Keenly keep an eye-
From brilliant distant skies
A bear that’s balanced on the log below
As frisky salmon hop
For a moment remain still
Around him
In the swiftly flowing stream.
