We are up to speed on our so-called September crypto heist that saw the vault door being blown off and a wallet of 387.5 million dollars stolen from Bitget without so much as cracking a lock. The burglar didn't get in from snapping the vault door open and making off with the cash but by forging withdrawal slips with a leaked API key to third-party security management tools and while Bitget has since rotated their vault, reassured us they never accessed their cold storage and reactivated the withdrawal lights, our crook wasn't hanging around to wait for the 911 call.

The lesson Block Sec's team learned was that the attacker had set himself up with a three-act plan for leaving the scene of the crime and the first act played out just 41 minutes in - before Bitget even tweeted that something was off, when an estimated US$75.48 million of the kind of money that can be frozen, such as USDT and USDC, was traded for ETH and AVAX via Uniswap and 1inch because our thief knows Tether and Circle love a big red freeze button and they push it - and sure enough, when they finally did on a wallet with $318k, the money had already checked out of the hotel.

Part two was the epic bitcoin migration, where all, every single coin, from every chain was quietly migrated to bitcoin, with THORChain doing the lion's share, placing $269m across 7,804 trips, and Chainflip filling the other $37m, and on snapshot on September 29, the thief was still sitting comfortably on around $342m, or 88.3 per cent of the total, and nearly everything else, including 3,386 bitcoin was now under a bitcoin cap.

And then, the disappearing act, act three, as if by magic, because once you have Bitcoin, you need to make it forget where it came from, so that the coins can be led into the swirling coil of a Coin Join mixer, that giant washing machine where your coin gets tossed with a hundred others until neither you nor the coin are sure whether it's yours anymore, $3,944,732 went in there, and AMLBot catches 4 BTC moosing around in the Wasabi Coin Join.

Here's the punchline that makes this a comedy: 5 days into the heist, after all this beautiful tracing, only $840,000 (0.2%) is actually frozen, THORChain washed it's hands of it and said sorry we are permissionless we cannot block anyone, and the launderers are now so comfortable they are allegedly accepting orders in public on Discord and Telegram like it's a POS business.

We have caught the thief on-chain, his wallet is boiling up, with 3,386 BTC, but pockets are empty and the coins already in shoki's mixer. This is why we asked yesterday how did he steal them, and today we ask again: can we catch the thief, without catching the stolen money?

[10-Year Question] The Thing I Was Most Sure About in 2016 Was Wrong by 2020

In 2016 I would have bet real money that the most important number in crypto was the transaction fee. Cheaper fees win, I thought. Whoever moves money for a fraction of a cent takes the whole market. It seemed obvious. It was the kind of thing everyone around me agreed on, which should have been my first warning.

By 2020 that conviction looked almost quaint. Bitcoin, the network with the slowest blocks and the most stubborn fees, had added a settlement layer underneath it and kept growing. The "cheap and fast" coins I'd been so confident about mostly faded, not because they were technically wrong, but because they were optimizing for a question that stopped mattering. I had picked the right metric for the wrong decade.

That mistake taught me more than any win ever did. And it's the reason I keep asking the same uncomfortable question about everything I believe now: will this still be true in ten years?

Most people never ask it. They can't. The entire machinery of this industry is built to make you answer a different question — what's moving in the next hour. Everyone wants the next hour. $LONG wants the next decade. And those two timeframes don't just produce different answers. They produce different people.

Why the obvious thing is usually the short-term thing

Here's what nobody tells you about being early: being early feels exactly like being wrong, for a very long time.

Think about how the fee story actually played out. In 2017, during the peak of the block-size wars, Bitcoin fees spiked and people genuinely believed the network was finished. "Unusable." "A museum piece." The narrative that cheaper chains would eat Bitcoin's lunch wasn't fringe — it was the mainstream take among smart, technical people. If you had surveyed the room in late 2017, low fees would have won in a landslide.

What that room couldn't price in was duration. Bitcoin didn't need to win the fee war. It needed to still be here, still secured, still credibly scarce, when the question changed from "how cheap is a transaction?" to "what can I actually trust to hold value across a full cycle?" The property that mattered wasn't speed. It was survival. And survival only reveals itself over time — it is, by definition, the one thing you cannot measure in an afternoon.

This is the part that breaks people's brains. The most valuable trait of an asset or a technology is often completely invisible on a short timeframe, because the thing you're trying to measure is the passage of time. You cannot screenshot resilience. You can only wait for it.

Compounding is a bet on boredom

I keep coming back to compounding, because it's the clearest proof that time is a different kind of input than everything else.

The math is familiar enough that people have stopped feeling it. A sum growing at 7% a year roughly doubles in about a decade — that's the old "rule of 72" (72 divided by your growth rate gives you the doubling time). But the doubling that matters isn't the first one. It's the seventh. The curve looks almost flat for years, then bends so hard it stops looking like the same chart. Most people quit during the flat part. Not because the math failed — because the math was boring, and boredom is the real tax on compounding.

Crypto makes this worse, not better. The volatility is loud enough to drown out the signal entirely. A chain can do everything right for three years and you'd barely notice, because in any given week the price noise is a hundred times larger than the fundamental progress. The short-term trader experiences that noise as information. The long-term thinker experiences it as weather — real, occasionally violent, and almost totally irrelevant to whether you should be standing in this particular field in ten years.

I'm not saying price doesn't matter. I'm saying it's the slowest variable to tell the truth and the fastest to lie.

The question that actually works

So here's the practice I've settled on, and it's embarrassingly simple. Before I believe anything strongly, I try to write down what would have to be true in ten years for this belief to still make sense. Not the price. The premise.

For Bitcoin, the ten-year premise is something like: scarcity stays credible, the incentive to secure the network holds, and no better form of hard digital money emerges to replace it. You don't need a price target to evaluate that. You just need to watch whether those premises are strengthening or weakening, year over year. That's a question you can actually answer honestly, because it's slow enough to observe.

Compare that to the 2016 version of me, whose entire thesis — cheapest fees win — had a ten-year premise of "money is primarily a payments problem." As soon as I'd written that sentence down, I'd have seen the flaw. Money is a trust problem first and a payments problem second. Payments are solvable by many; trust compounds for few.

It would seem no one cares about price. If you look at the graphic I spent about 2 weeks doing heavy buybacks, bumping the price. As soon as I stop heavy buybacks people see cheap and dump. I will never understand it.

For example. People know buybacks are happening. Lets just say I was buying at 0.05. There is buy orders in the buy book for 0.0025. People would rather instantly sell for 0.0025 rather than wait upto 24 hours for me to buy back. They could put in a sell order for 0.05.

I been here for over 7 years, and layer 2 tokens have always had this problem. And I will never understand it.

Token Origins: The Tally Stick Was a Blockchain Made of Wood

In 1834 the British government decided to burn its old money. Not banknotes — sticks. Centuries of notched hazelwood tally sticks, the accounting records of the Exchequer, stuffed into two furnaces beneath the House of Lords. The fire got away from them. Parliament burned to the ground. Turner painted it. And almost nobody who admires that painting knows the building was destroyed by the disposal of an obsolete monetary technology.

I keep coming back to those sticks. Because if you want to understand what a blockchain actually is — underneath the jargon, underneath the hype — you could do worse than to hold a piece of notched wood in your hand.

Let me tell you what a tally stick was, and I think you'll see it too.

A tally was a length of wood, usually hazel, on which a debt was recorded by cutting notches across the grain. The width of the notch encoded the amount. A cut the size of a man's palm meant a thousand pounds. The width of a thumb, a hundred. A grain of barleycorn, a single pound. The English word "score" — as in to keep score — comes from this, from the Old Norse skor, a notch, a cut, a tally mark. To score something was to write it into wood.

Then came the clever part, the part that makes me call it a sign made programmable.

Once the debt was notched, the stick was split lengthwise, straight down through every cut. Now there were two pieces, and both carried the same notches. The larger piece was the stock — kept by the creditor, the one owed money. (Yes: this is where "stock" in the financial sense comes from. When you own stock, you are etymologically holding the long half of a split stick.) The smaller piece was the foil, kept by the debtor.

Here is the sign doing its work. The two halves only matched — grain, knots, notch-alignment — if they were the same stick. You could not forge a matching foil, because wood does not split twice the same way. To verify a debt, you brought the two pieces together and checked that they tallied. The record and its counter-record had to agree, or the claim was void.

Sit with that. A tamper-evident record. Distributed across two parties so no single holder can rewrite it. Verified not by trusting a person but by checking that two independent copies reconcile. We built that. Out of hazel. In the twelfth century.

What the notch understood that we forgot

I've written before that coins are signs, logos are signs, tokens are signs. The tally stick is the cleanest proof I know that the record of value is itself a sign — and that the hard problem was never representing the number. Any child can carve a "10." The hard problem was making the sign impossible to lie about.

Every serious money technology in history is really a war against forgery and double-spending. The tally solved it physically: the debt lived in the matched fracture of a single object, split in two. The Exchequer solved trust the same way a merchant's ledger did later — by making the two sides of a transaction check each other.

Money is double-entry by nature. My asset is your liability. The stock and the foil are the oldest double-entry bookkeeping I can point to, and they predate the Italian merchants we usually credit with inventing it by a few hundred years. The debt wasn't written down so much as written across — a single truth, held redundantly, by people with opposing interests.

Sound like anything?

A blockchain is a ledger where the same record is held by parties who don't trust each other, structured so that tampering with your copy makes it fail to reconcile with everyone else's. The cryptographic hash is the modern grain of the wood: change one notch upstream and the whole thing no longer splits clean. Nakamoto's contribution wasn't inventing the ledger — ledgers are ancient. It was solving the double-spend without a trusted third party holding both halves. The Exchequer needed a room where you brought the two sticks together. Bitcoin replaced the room with math.

The tally still needed someone — the Court of the Exchequer — to be the place of reconciliation. That's the piece cryptography dissolved. But the shape of the idea is identical: a value-sign made verifiable by structural redundancy, not by faith in the person holding it.

The part I got wrong

For a long time I thought of tally sticks as primitive receipts — a way to remember a debt when most people couldn't read. Charming, but a dead end.

That's backwards. The tally wasn't a memory aid; it circulated. The Crown would issue a tally as a promise of future tax revenue, and the holder of the stock could sell that stick to someone else at a discount for cash now. The wooden stick became a transferable claim on the state — a bearer instrument, a bond, money. People traded the notches, not the wood. The wood was just the substrate; the value lived in the sign and in the fact that two halves would one day tally.
