Today I share impressions from an amazing fungi encounter I had this August.

What might you find under an apple tree in August besides apples? Well, if you get down on your knees and take a veeeery close look, you might just find some mushrooms! Can you see them yet? Let me bring them into focus...

The fungus is called Common bird's nest (Crucibulum laeve), in Russian 'Бокальчик гладкий'. It’s impossible to spot these little fellows from a standing height—I only noticed them once I was down on my knees, peering intently at the ground. I found a huge settlement of this specie which felt quite comfortable on the dead leaves and branches of an appletree. Well, there is an oak tree very close too but I didnt notice that these fungi prefer oak wood; actually I've read they gladly consume any type of dead wood.

In their early stages, the fungus’s fruiting bodies resemble little barrels of honey, edged with velvet or fur. As they grow, they elongate and begin to look more like small jugs filled with mead... or perhaps coffee crema.

They are a bit fluffy and tiny — literally 5–7 millimeters in height. The substrate to which they are attached in the photo (to give you an idea of the scale) consists of the dried-up stems of wilted grass.

The photo above is the focus stake of 9 separate captures.

This picture is a focus stake created from 4 shots. Matured colony - the 'nests' already opened and maybe released some spores outside. Many spores still can be seen inside. I collected a pinch of spores and transported to another spot of my land which has a lot of wood chips on the ground; maybe that will boost a new colonies to appear? Will see next year.

There are a dozen different types of these "mushroom nests," varying slightly in size and design; some are more photogenic than others. I don’t think this is the most beautiful variety, but I’m incredibly happy to have found them — for several years, the dream of discovering a "bird’s nest" had become for me a real "gestalt", one that I finally brought to closure this summer. The next goal is to encounter black chanterelles. 😎

The Bloody Brittlegill

[![](https://i.ecency.com/DQmRXjq1hjX8KvkwqcJ6HAVJJ4qFRdmeBMw8b282spBHXy3/20260906_062610884_ios.jpg)](https://i.ecency.com/DQmRXjq1hjX8KvkwqcJ6HAVJJ4qFRdmeBMw8b282spBHXy3/20260906_062610884_ios.jpg)Greetings, friendsI completely forgot that today is Friday. I only remembered it now, towards the end of the day. Our Friday is related to mushrooms. The mushroom season is already over. Yesterday, my coworker and I discussed his weekend plans. He said he wanted to go into the woods and look for mushrooms. This is an interesting idea. Last week was abnormally warm for our region for this time of the year. The thermometer showed +20 degrees Celsius. It's a joy, but... This is bad for our trees and bushes in the garden; they think that spring has come and are beginning to bloom.

[![](https://i.ecency.com/DQmdbNBis1dm8dRc9XNmprqLmHhrq3PMKPryjyBds3WgSDs/20260906_062601586_ios.jpg)](https://i.ecency.com/DQmdbNBis1dm8dRc9XNmprqLmHhrq3PMKPryjyBds3WgSDs/20260906_062601586_ios.jpg)

The necessary conditions are required for the growth of mushrooms, especially with regard to humidity and temperature, especially the temperature of the soil, if we are talking about mushrooms that grow from the ground, because in our case they are usually the only edible ones.
Tomorrow morning I will go for a walk with my dog in the forest and try to find these last autumn mushrooms. But today I'm showing you a mushroom from my summer collection.

[![](https://i.ecency.com/DQmRQiXtF6wPJDadWxaRVo8wztWrsVs8p6FK52ZMZfqTzx4/20260906_062549037_ios.jpg)](https://i.ecency.com/DQmRQiXtF6wPJDadWxaRVo8wztWrsVs8p6FK52ZMZfqTzx4/20260906_062549037_ios.jpg)

It looked like just another russula - plain and unassuming. But something about it hooked my attention, and I can’t quite put my finger on why. Anyone got a theory?
I found myself staring at the stem. Usually, with these mushrooms, it’s pure white, clean and crisp. This one was different: the stem matched the cap, like the whole thing had been dipped in the same shade of red. It made the fungus feel… intentional, somehow.
We never take these home. They’re too brittle - one wrong move and they crumble to pieces. We usually go for the ones with blue caps; those hold up better in the basket. But out here in my woods, it’s all red russulas as far as the eye can see. Just these delicate, stubborn little things, standing their ground among the fallen leaves.

I also have a number of mushrooms in my collection, the name of which I do not even know. There will be more Fridays ahead and I will show them.

No! We don't eat that. Not a single mushroom was damaged during the shooting.

You see, normally autumn is not really my cup of tea. The smell of the wet leaves, the morning fog leaving some juicy traces on everything and and the constant shifting in winter clothing and in the afternoon pulling out the summer clothes is not really my favorite to say for the least.

But nearly every walk this week has been nothing more but fantastic as the temperature in the afternoons was still passing the more than 20 degrees celsius and it was truly a gift to be outside every day with the sun shining in the face.

I have been listening to a lot of podcasts lately while doing these walks. Not the ones where it is just one episode about some story. But more the ones that are about a cold case of some kind and where there has been multiple episodes of getting into the details, very often about all kinds of stuff that wasn't allowed to be shared before. Because several years had passed new information has come out and hopefully while sharing this new stuff, that also means that new clues worth investigating somehow might pop up.

Something that is more than interesting about these podcasts is what I find, they are happening more in the country side than in the big city, giving all kinds of Dutch dialects the chance to come into the open. And I absolutely love it!

Bring in the language that doesn't always get spoken about the people who don't always get seen!

The countryside people are like the shrooms in the woods

In general I always find that the high profile cases that happen in the Netherlands are always in the 'randstad' region. The randstad is what we call the four big cities together: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and every city there in between.

Not that this is the region where the high profile cases actually happen, it is the region where the most attention is given to. It is the region where the shroom is in contrast with the green background and you can really see of hear it and the audience is a listener that is willing to listen most.

Then we have another category. It is also the category where families are ripped apart, someone is missing their loved one and still doesn't have the closure of knowing that their family member is still alive or not. But because this is all in a dialect because of the region where it took place in, it feels like a whole part of the Netherlands doesn't really relate to it. Farm side hillbillies you know.

These are the shrooms that blend into more in the background. You don't really see them because they aren't screaming for attention. They are just there and you need to notice them and pay a closer look.

Also...the cold case team in for instance Rotterdam region has 10 people fully dedicated to the cold cases. The whole providence of Limburg has..... 1.

Interesting right?

Small disclaimer here of course, as I know there are enough Hiveans here from the city side in the Netherlands and I love you all. This is just for some extreme contrast you know!!

Full on attention

The thing to me while listening to these stories is that I love that I need full attention to it. When I am listening to some of these stories there is not option to think about anything else than what is happening on air. When I let the mind drift off about whatever other topic than what is in the podcast, immediately I didn't listen proper anymore and I missed the story again.

Multitasking is so much a lie in these kinds of thing!

![](https://i.ecency.com/DQmXkx5rZhErgszoqNk88FpXDnmDgENC7HbSmHNoAJ43SpD/1792139199724.jpg)
Even taking a decent look around and seeing all of these different mushrooms popping up is already sometimes stealing a bit too much of my listening attention, and I have to go back in the story to hear what happened again.
Or does this mean I am getting old and I can not split my attention anymore...

Because whenever the attention slips it means that sometimes you pass that shroom all of a sudden and miss it entirely because you aren't seeing the detail. (See what is happening here...the analogy with shrooms and cold cases...)

Hello to all my fellow mushroom enthusiasts, wherever you may be. As always, I hope you are all healthy and happy, able to go about your daily activities smoothly, and that you have a wonderful day.

Lately, my area has been experiencing frequent rainfall. This has inspired me to head to the back of my house in search of interesting wild mushrooms to share with this beloved community. One of the mushrooms I managed to find goes by the scientific name Parasola auricoma.

I spotted the mushroom growing on the damp ground, so I approached it and took several photos from various angles. I observed that it was growing in a cluster and had the typical umbrella-like shape common to many mushrooms. It measured approximately 3 to 5 cm in size and had a brownish color. Below are some of the photos I took of the mushroom.

Good day, Hivers!! A wonderful day to all of you...

Early this morning, I went out to the backyard to rake the fallen leaves, but I discovered something else. There were tiny cream colored mushroooms growing between a plastic container and a rotting branch. I tried to check online, and the closest I could find is Baeospora myosura (please correct me if I'm wrong on this).

According to Google, they are known to grow in North America or in Europe; they grow on fallen conifer cones, that's why they were given the name conifercone caps. Studies show they also grow in some regions in the Philippines, and they grow on rich soil and decaying organic matter.

I tried to take the plastic container covering them. The stems were very long and extended under the container. I don't know if these are edible, and I have no plans to eat them, so I just left them there. 😁

I continued cleaning the backyard and didn't check on them.

Its been a long time since I posted in this community..
Today.. I will share the photos of mushrooms that i saw outside our house besides our gate..
Last Friday, my wife and I went out to buy groceries..,because our food supplies were running low. As I was about to leave our gate,..I noticed a rotten mango branch with some mushrooms growing on it.. My wife suggested that I take some photos of them...
I didn't bring my camera, so I used the cellphone of my wife to take a pictures instead,..
Here are the photos I managed to capture.

It is edible and commonly used in different dishes, such as Chop Suey, a popular vegetable dish here in the Philippines that contains a different kinds of vegetables.

When we were still young, we used to see many of these mushrooms growing on rotten tree branches in our backyard or in the forest at the back of hour home. However, nowadays, I rarely see them growing around our area. I don't even see them being sold at the local market anymore...

I often see different kinds of mushrooms being sold at the market, but most of them are cultivated and grown specifically for commercial production. It has become rare to find these wild mushrooms growing naturally in the forest...

This year’s trip to the countryside in early September wasn't exactly kind when it came to mushrooms. Temperatures were high, and a drought that had persisted for weeks offered little hope for a bountiful harvest.

Despite the extreme dryness—with twigs snapping loudly underfoot—I managed to find a few things, though there wasn't a single edible mushroom to be seen. Still, there were plenty of fly agarics and other species to admire.

Most of the mushrooms were seeking moisture in the moss or within old tree stumps; otherwise, there was no chance for them to grow at all.

Większość grzybów szukała wilgoci we mchu lub w starych pniach drzew. Inaczej nie było szans na jakikolwiek wzrost.

Morning mists helped the situation slightly, depositing dew on the grass and providing a bit of moisture.

Lekko poprawiły sytuację poranne mgły, które osadzały rosę na trawie i dostarczały trochę wilgoci.

Conditions improved significantly in the following days when a rainy weather front arrived. But that is a story for another time.

Sytuacja znacznie poprawiła się w kolejnych dniach, gdy nadszedł deszczowy front atmosferyczny. Ale to już opowieść na kolejny raz.

Usually, I can find different kinds of mushrooms in the area behind the house. It tends to stay more humid there, with plenty of decaying wood and old trees, so there is almost always something growing somewhere.

But for almost two months, we have barely had any rain. The ground has started to dry out, some of the areas that were usually moist have become hard and dry, and even some of the old, decaying trees have lost much of their moisture.

So lately, I have rarely seen any mushrooms at all.

A few days ago, it finally rained, but it was only a short shower. By the next morning, the water had already disappeared without leaving much trace. The dry soil and wood didn't seem to get enough moisture for mushrooms to start growing again. I thought I would have to wait a little longer.

Apparently, I was wrong. This morning, while I was about to wash my hands at the water tap beside the house, I noticed something quite surprising.

There were tiny mushrooms growing on the ground.

And there wasn't just one or two. There were quite a few of them, with tiny white caps and very thin, almost translucent stems. At first, I thought they had appeared because of the rain a few days ago. But after looking at the area more carefully, I don't think that was the reason.

The mushrooms were growing right around the water tap, an area that often gets a little wet and sometimes forms a small puddle. I also noticed that over the past few days, my mother had often been pouring the water left from washing rice around that area.

So while most of the yard had been drying out, this small patch of ground was still getting moisture on a regular basis.

Apparently, that was enough for these tiny mushrooms to appear.

I don't know exactly when they started growing. They might have already been there for a while, and I simply hadn't noticed them until this morning. Either way, after going so long without seeing mushrooms, finding them again felt surprisingly nice.

Finally, I found mushrooms again.

After seeing the tiny mushrooms, I became curious and decided to check the area behind the house. That's where I found another mushroom. This one was growing on the remains of a dead oil palm tree.

What caught my attention at first was the area underneath the mushroom cap.

From a certain angle, it looked as if the mushroom had some kind of reflection or strange shadow underneath it. For a moment, I thought there was something interesting happening on the surface of the wood. But when I looked more closely, I realized that it wasn't a reflection at all. It was actually fine material or spores that had fallen from the mushroom and accumulated on the surface of the wood, creating what looked like a shadow underneath it.

Little things like this are one of the reasons I enjoy photographing mushrooms. Sometimes, something that looks like part of the mushroom turns out to be something completely different. You have to take a closer look to understand what you're actually seeing.

I was simply happy to see mushrooms growing again.

After almost two months of watching the soil and old wood around the house become increasingly dry, these two small discoveries felt like a little reminder that fungi only need the right conditions to return.

It doesn't always have to be after heavy rain. Sometimes, a little moisture around a water tap, along with some leftover rice-washing water, can be enough to create a tiny place where mushrooms can grow. And perhaps that's what I enjoy most about looking for mushrooms around my home.

I never really know where they are going to appear next.

Good evening to all my fellow mushroom enthusiasts, wherever you may be. As always, I hope you are all healthy and happy, able to go about your daily activities smoothly, and that you are having a wonderful day.

For the past few days, my area has been experiencing constant rain. This has been a personal blessing, giving me a little time to look for wild mushrooms behind my house; the one I am sharing today is among the finds I made.

The mushroom is relatively small. I believe I have shared this type on my blog before, but this time I found the same variety in a different color. It measures about 2 to 3 cm, has an incredibly slender stem, and grows in clusters—I discovered this particular specimen growing amidst wild foliage.

Below are some photos I managed to capture of the mushroom from various angles.

Hello friends🍄.

Today I checked on some passion fruit seeds that I had started germinating on a napkin, but they had too much moisture. When I noticed some tiny fungi and realized I had a 60X microscope that attaches to my cell phone, I decided to take a couple of photos.
