NaPodPoMo 2026 Day 4: Playing with MIDI

Today I talk about the MIDI protocol that lets you link musical instruments. I have looked into it before, but have some more gear now and am experimenting.

Many years ago I walked into an electricals shop where a guy was demonstrating this technology when it was still new. He gave me his book that I just managed to find. I think he ran some magazines about this stuff.

I am in the stage of 'lots of gear, but no idea', but we have access to plenty of information online these days. My friend @nicklewis has been giving me some tips. I may end up buying more gear, but will learn the principles first.

The software I am running on my Raspberry Pi is RaspiMIDIHub and it is very good.

Election Night and Caregiver Podcast Plans

Hey everybody, welcome back to the third episode of my national podcast post-month, uh, podcast. This is Shaine, and I have another update on what I'm going to be doing in terms of creating podcasts for dementia caregivers.
But before I do that, I want to let you know tonight is election night, and I will be spending some time tonight, uh, listening to— or watching— local election coverage on our local radio station. So we have a radio station, 710 KURV, that does election night coverage. They'll go through the results and, uh, and pull the results from the Secretary of State's website and discuss winners and losers. But they also actually offer a livestream on X, so if you're interested in watching South Texas election coverage, you can follow @710KURV on X and watch the livestream with me. It's, uh, it's a tradition around here because they— they really get into all of the local elections for all kinds of different races, for, you know, city councils, for mayors, for county seats, for districts, and statewide elections, all that sort of thing. So it's a pretty exciting time to listen to that radio station on election night, so I'll be doing that tonight.

So now, moving back to the caregiving podcast. So I've decided that I'm going to be doing caregiving, uh, podcasts or videos on YouTube because I think the topics that I'm covering are going to be more, more local in some ways, based on the government programs that are available and nonprofits and resources that are available. It wouldn't make sense for somebody in another country to— well, it wouldn't make too much sense to learn about these things if you live somewhere else. There will be some general content that will be useful for people who live abroad, but for the most part, I think it's going to be more localized.

And on the other hand, there is some content that I think that would be more universal and I think would be fitting a platform like 3Speak on the Hive blockchain. And that is self-care for the caregiver, because in case that you have a parent who has Alzheimer's, there's a good chance that you will inherit that gene or also be susceptible to Alzheimer's. And so there are things that you can do to make sure that you're healthy and don't succumb, or so that you can postpone the onset of Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia. And it starts with caring for yourself, your health, for, you know, things like diet and exercise and, uh, other things that you can do to help you avoid going down that path. So I think that's how we're going to break it up. On X, although I had originally thought that I would do it on X, I might still do it. I'm not 100% on that. I— so the trouble is that I recognize that YouTube has a very good search and has a really large audience, but at the same time, I have more faith in X at the moment, not getting my content removed, or at least having the opportunity to monetize at some point, possibly. I don't know. But what I want to avoid, definitely, is having to post on multiple platforms, post the same content on multiple platforms. Although I think video is not penalized the way that writing is.

NaPodPoMo Day 3: The music of Steven Wilson

On this third day of the podcast challenge I talk about the musician Steven Wilson who I have been into for a few years now. He has a big following, but is mostly under the radar. I saw him perform just last week at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

His music may be referred to as prog, but he loves pop too.

I only recorded a brief bit of the show, but I include it to give you a flavour. Look him up on Youtube, Spotify etc. Not to be confused with the US musician Stephen Wilson Jr.

I just came across something interesting on 3speak:

It’s a podcasting challenge—30 episodes over 30 days throughout November. The format is flexible; you could release one episode a day, drop seven all at once over the weekend, or even post all 30 by the end of the period.

I’ve realized that my English-speaking skills are still quite weak, which is why I decided to jump straight into this challenge.

I know my pronunciation is often off—as you can hear in this recording, my delivery sounds very stiff while reading from the script I prepared.

I hope that by practising this way, I’ll become more fluent in English—especially when speaking in public or communicating directly with others.

I’ve named this podcast "Kagok Talk." In Indonesian, kagok refers to that awkward, stiff, or uncomfortable feeling one might experience in certain situations or when around specific people.

Through this podcast, I want to shed that sense of kagok—that awkwardness—when speaking English with others.
