Some ideas about Lula's defeat last night

I’m not starting with the discussion about predictions. They’re increasingly unreliable — or at least debatable. I suspect some are published in altered form to demobilize certain forces while concealing the real assessment. I’m starting from reality: Lula da Silva, the incumbent and current occupant of the Planalto Palace, was defeated in the first electoral round by Flavio Bolsonaro, Jair Bolsonaro’s first son. This is my brief take.

The integrity of the count

The first point worth highlighting is the robustness of Brazil’s counting process. After cases as serious as Honduras last year or Venezuela in 2024, a reliable vote-counting mechanism that raises no serious doubts is always welcome. With practically all polling stations counted, the official site resultados.tse.jus.br — maintained by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court — shows Bolsonaro winning the first round with just over 47% of the vote; Lula crossed the 45% threshold but with a significant drop in performance compared to 2022.

The forecast is that Lula will have to row hard against the current to recover in the second and final round. But even then, he will face a clear disadvantage in Congress — a battlefield where his political camp lost key duels in both legislative chambers. The Bolsonarista party is set to control roughly a third of the Senate after nearly doubling its representation there. In coalition, they will retain substantial firepower to support or punish any future government. Lula also suffered heavy losses in the state governorship races. Tarcísio de Freitas, for example, defeated former presidential candidate and former Lula's Finance Minister Fernando Haddad by a wide margin in São Paulo. Overall, it was a bitter night for most of the former ministers who sought regional or national office.

The economy

The high cost of living proved an insurmountable barrier for Lula among a critical segment of voters. “Someone earning the minimum wage has no way to get ahead,” a São Paulo butcher told Reuters. There is a clear vibecession at work: while Latin America once again hears talk of macroeconomic advances, large parts of the population feel that little or none of the distribution reaches them.

Coalitions and debts

The preoccupation with staying in power and running the vast machinery of the state creates a growing distance between promises and concrete results. That distance is particularly sharp between the people at the very base of a movement like the PT and those who claim to represent them. A governing party must reach forces that may even oppose it, leaving little room to maneuver. Lula 2.0 fell short in translating his discourse into practical projection. And that vacillation is paid for dearly at the ballot box.

When Did Hate Become the Only Political Currency?

After a wild morning scrolling on Facebook I came across another of the usual posts where a creator mentioned that possibly the new prime minister of the UK could change some things for the better (not an opinion I hold out much hope of coming true to be honest, but I do see some positive things he's said he will do that look pretty good to me). Lets see if he follows them with action.

But like all things Zuckerbook... the post title is pure clickbait, if not ragebait for the more insane side of the right wing.

And... due to the over abundance of morons in the UK, and the massive array of AI bots that the Reform party have deployed with their ill gotten cash, these posts often get swamped with very short (and suspiciously similar) comments.

Please don't mistake me, I don't think Andy Burnham is anthing more than another company man. A career politician who will spin his opinion and promises on their heads when/if it suits his agenda. But he is a hell of a lot better than some of the lunatics that have infiltrated UK politics at this time.

Better the devil you know and all that jazz.

This is a classic move of Reform bots and high-ups to call other people nonces as some of Tommy Robinson's (he used to be on hive for a while) known companions have quite a rap sheet in regards to assaults on underage girls (please see the article referenced at the bottom of this post).

Please understand that I do not share these pictures and facts to shock and offend, it is simply maddening to me and many other people that this scum attempts to scapegoat Muslims as all being paedophiles, when their is evidence out there like this. Of course there will be criminals of all types among all sub-cultures, but it is proportional. There is only a small proportion of truly sick people in any sub-culture of people. The far right have very cleverly chosen the one thing that extremist Islam has the worst track record for as a religion which is their subjugation of woman in general. But the EDL and other far right lunatics try to create this fervour stating that all Muslims have rape and paedophilia built into their culture.

An out and out lie.

Evidence doesn't lie, convictions such as those highlighted above that Tommy's friends perpetrated don't lie!

But moving swiftly on to one of my favourite comments which adds a bit of levity to this already rather heavy article...

My little part in educating idiots and providing alternative, fact based content.

A nice lady called Teresa Ave posted an inflammatory, factually incorrect poster meme claiming 'Leftism' as she called it was a hate group and a religion of self-hatred. I personally love most people, and certainly don't hate myself, or my male-ness, or the right and reality of one of my best friends who happens to be gay to celebrate their identity as a male. She was one of many who appeared suddenly on a Fbook antifascist group.

Strangely, I had a very similar debate with a guy only two days earlier who was responding to everyone by calling them leftie nonces, but he rapidly deleted his whole comment thread after I responded in similar kind as to the comment below, which meant that my comment was deleted on his thread as well, there was no attempt at an answer or even addressing some of the issues I'd raised.

It is almost like they looked at the response and thought get that measured, non reactive, multi-paragraph response off here asap or some people might change their minds 😆

There is no left wing option to vote for any more apart from, perhaps, the green party, but they are only left wing in some of their policies. Labour certainly aren't left wing, go study what a left wing government does.

На таласу народног незадовољствѕ корумпираним политичарима, у Грчкој је 2015. године на изборима убедљиво победила левичарска партија Сириза. Победила је захваљујући обећањима да ће укинути окрутне мере штедње које је ЕУ наметнула како би се Грчка изборила са кризом због државног дуга. На власт је дошао четрдесетосмогодишњи Алексис Ципрас, најмлађи премијер Грчке у последњих 150 година. Са собом је повео изванредног финансијског стручњака Јаниса Варуфакиса, који је на место министра финансија дошао са разрађеним планом за супротстављање условима тзв. трећег програмског економског пакета за Грчку. Нажалост, тај план није могао да буде примењен онолико брзо, колико је брзо реаговала бриселска бирократија. Грчке банке су под потпуном контролом Европске Централне Банке (ЕЦБ) и истог тренутка кад је Ципрас одбио њихове услове, прекинути су сви токови новца у Грчкој. Све је стало. Нико није могао да подигне свој новац, ни плате, ни пензије, ни издржавања, нити је могао да плати «преко жице» новцем који поседује. Људи су бачени у потпуни очај немајући могућност да се изборе за кору хлеба. После само седам месеци, Варуфакис је практично натеран да се из владе повуче. Грчка је све услове морала да прихвати, а заузврат је добила ново одлагање исплате дуга. Ципрас је наредне изборе изгубио. Од великих очекивања није остало ништа, и нова корумпирана политичка гарнитура заузела је позиције бранећи интерес најкрупнијег капитала. Пресудио је банкомат.

А овде? Од Народне Банке Србије остало је само име. То је само мењачница у којој се одређује курс динара везан за евро. Као и у случају Грчке, Европска Централна Банка има потпуну контролу над банкарским сектором у колонији званој «Србија». Шта мислите, шта ће се догодити уколико се кроз изборни циркус пробије неко спреман да се Бриселу супротстави?
