Remember Gratitude!

I realize that I do a fair amount of moaning and bellyaching about various aspects of life and things that are not turning out as planned... and about a world that seems to have come off the rails in so many ways.

I'm not pretending to give myself a "free pass" here, but it is very easy — and tempting — to get swept up in the swirling cloud of fear and negativity purveyed by the media and talking heads on YouTube. After all, we're served a perpetual soup of disaster after disaster, right?

Which is why — at least from my perspective — I think it is really important to periodically just stop and instead reflect on everything I have to be grateful for, instead.

I'm not talking about some woo-woo New Age Kumbaya gratitude chant, but an actual tangible inventory of the good things we have.

Sure, life might suck a fair amount of the time, but it surely doesn't suck all the time! There are actually plenty of things to be grateful for... quite a few of which we are prone to taking for granted.

For example, our friendships.

2-3 times a week I head out to visit an elderly friend of ours who lives nearby. He has limited mobility, so he needs help with various things, and I sometimes run errands for him.

I have come to increasingly view these times not so much as acts of service as an opportunity to spend time with a friend who has lived a fascinating life. And I am really grateful for that friendship.

In a quite different way, I am often complaining about the ridiculous cost of healthcare and the ridiculous maze it is to navigate insurance and what is covered and what is not. Given that, I am also really grateful for my — relatively speaking — quite good health... meaning that I actually have to interface with that whole circus considerably less than most of my peers. What a blessing!

Not related, I am also really grateful for our cats who provide a sort of "innocent counterpoint" in an often messed up world. I can sit and watch them just enjoy the simplest of things, like playing in a cardboard box and sleeping in the sun, warming their bellies. They remind me that simple things matter, and often are more important than the chaos of the world.

Just a few hours ago, I found myself mesmerized by yet another spectacular sunset and I felt really grateful for the beauty of nature... and the "shows" nature puts on so often, and without ever charging admission.

And while I may complain about our constant financial troubles and the seemingly endless challenges of self-employment, I shall always be immensely grateful that I have the ability to work at home and not be at the mercy of of some soulless company that requires me to put in 60 stress-laden hours a week, doing something that has little meaning and serves even less purpose.

And I am grateful that I'm able to write these words from the comfort of a warm home... unlike the poor lady with her little dog, standing on the corner by the supermarket this afternoon, holding up a cardboard sign that read "Homeless and hungry, anything helps! God Bless!"

What kind of world is this, that we have people of retirement age, sleeping on benches in public because they have no other option? I have been in her shoes, and I am grateful not to be!

I heard something poignant the other day... relating to the way we humans so often get wrapped up in all the things we don't have and really want:

"Consider that many of the things around you that you are calling old and boring, and in need of being replaced with something new... were once things you really wanted to GET because they would make your life so much better!"

Wise words, indeed!

Still Alive

I'm a horrible Hive community member lately. Yeah, I've been poking my head in and voting on a few posts. But haven't really been reading or engaging much. Am I sorry for it? Not really.

Been enjoying life offline more in the last few weeks than I have in a long time. Been getting out of the house. Fiddling and farting around in the yard. Still straightening up the garage. Finished up the shed. Working now on the basement. Getting out with the old vets again. Living life as it should be.

That and I'm still struggling through my online courses. Tons of reading, researching, and writing. That takes up a good chunk of my time too.

Also sleeping better. Not waking up at 3 AM and sitting up staring at the screen. Not sitting in a dark room at night alone with my shitty thoughts. Actually going to bed at a decent time and sleeping in to a decent hour of the morning.

Considering where my mental state was a few weeks ago, I'm doing much better. So much better. There were a few of you out there that were struggling too when I was. I hope you all are feeling some relief and getting out of the funk as well. Climbing out of the hole as I like to say.

Anyway, sitting here on a rainy Friday. Smells of sourdough whiffing through the house. Wife is baking lots of bread to take to some family for a get together next weekend. I get to stay home and babysit the dogs. Bachelor time!
Just kidding. Honestly I get lonely after she's gone for a day. Will probably spend a good deal of time in the garage finishing it up and watching some movies on top of studying.

Sometimes stepping away from the screen is the healthiest thing you can do. Touch grass as the kids say. Reconnect with the real world. The people in front of you. The projects that need done. The life that's happening while you're scrolling.

I'll be back around more eventually. For now, I'm just checking in. Hope you all are doing well. And letting you know I'm still alive.

The “Appearance” of Being Busy

Have you ever known somebody who always gave the appearance of being extremely busy at all times — and never having time to do anything — but at the same time it was almost impossible to discern what exactly it was that kept them busy?

I actually remember thinking this about my own mother when I was in my 20s, because she always seemed to be involved in something but during any of the times I went and stayed with her I could never figure out what exactly it was she was doing other than potentially planning the things that she needed to be doing.

From my current vantage point of being 66 years of age I still seem to encounter quite a few people in life who give the appearance of being busy without really being able to show anything for all their busy-ness.

Back when I was working in the IT industry, they seemed to be the people who congregated around the proverbial water cooler to complain endlessly about how many meetings and emails they had to deal with and yet they were somehow often absent from the meetings because they were busy dealing with e-mail and failing to send the emails because they were busy with meetings.

Underlying this appearance of eternal busy-ness was a subtext that they were always the victim of being overworked.

I've never quite been able to figure out whether such people are just trying to scam everybody into believing that they are busier than they really are, or whether the yardstick they're using to measure what busy feels like is very different from our own and the slightest bit of effort feels to them like they are being grown through the bone.

What I found particularly annoying back when I was working in the corporate world was the fact that these were also often the people who were towards the front of the pack when it came to being offered promotions and pay raises. The particular irritation arising out of the fact that their consideration came from the appearance of what they did rather than from actually producing any tangible work.

Maybe it was all just a master manipulation and I'm missing the point.

I guess I have never been particularly good at manipulation. While I definitely I'm not very fond of working and would just as well sit around and do nothing, I don't operate under the illusion that I should be compensated for my "massive" contributions when all I'm trying to do is not contribute.

Entitlement, anyone?

Maybe I just have an outdated work ethic, in the sense that actually working is the only reason I am likely to have for "looking busy."

Who Are You BECOMING... Because of What You Believe?

Undeniably, spirituality and the quest for meaning is extremel important to many people.

However, there is a difference between making spirituality engaging and turning a spiritual quest into a carnival.

I understand the temptation. When I interviewed renowned psychic medium Michelle Whitedove on my "Radio Nahmaste" show years ago, she told me during an ad break: "Don't join the carnival, Sarah, just don't. Most people just want the thrill, they're not interested in the truth." That stuck with me.

Teaching has always required a little theater. A story that holds attention. A symbol opens a door. Mystery invites curiosity. Ritual gives the invisible somewhere to land.

And yes, sometimes we need wonder...

But somewhere along the way, wonder can become spectacle. A circus performance, instead of a teaching moment.

Suddenly everyone was someone important, in another lifetime.

A priestess.
A pharaoh.
A saint.
A famous mystic.
A keeper of some ancient lineage.
A reincarnated historical figure carrying forward a grand spiritual mission.

Very few people seem to remember the lifetimes of being the woman who baked bread for twelve children; the farmer who died unknown; the fisherman who never left his village, or the person whose entire spiritual accomplishment may simply have been learning how to love the people standing directly in front of them.

That interests me.

Because spiritual maturity — at least as I understand it — does not require us to become more extraordinary.

It asks us to become more honest.

More awake.
More compassionate.
More discerning.
More responsible for the energy we bring into a room.

There is nothing wrong with mythology, archetypes, past-life stories, visions, synchronicities, guides, symbols, or extraordinary experiences. My own life would be considerably easier to explain if I dismissed all of them.

I don’t.

But I have become increasingly cautious about confusing a meaningful experience with a "magnificent identity."

Perhaps you encountered the Magdalene archetype because something within you is learning devotion.

Perhaps the warrior appeared because courage is being demanded of you.

Perhaps the ancient priestess is not telling you who you were. Perhaps she is showing you what you are becoming.

That possibility may be less glamorous.

It may also be far more useful.

Spirituality should occasionally astonish us, but it should also humble us.

If every revelation simply makes us more important, more chosen, more exceptional, more cosmically significant than the people around us... then I think it becomes worth asking whether we are really encountering Spirit...

... or simply giving our ego a makeover with better costumes.

I still believe in mystery.
I still believe in the unseen.
I still believe there are experiences that do not fit neatly inside our explanations of reality.

But these days I have become less interested in the carnival than in exploring the direct experience.

I want to sit with the part that remains after the lights go out, the music stops, the costumes come off, and we are left alone with the oldest spiritual question there is:

Who are you becoming because of what you believe?

Declutter Or Downsize?

The podcasts are providing some much needed dopamine distraction while I go through my cupboards and drawers looking for old clothing I can donate to charity, and things I can sell at my local **Cash Converters** (pawn shop).

It’s a task I am paradoxically avoiding. I am expecting a Housing Trust inspection sometime soon, and I want this place spotless before then, but my motivation for this decluttering / downsizing / purge / scorched Earth policy is that I have criminal neighbours.

The goal is to give them less incentive to break into my home to fuel their drug addiction. I do not know what drug it is but I want no part of it. ChatGPT has said its most likely methamphetamines.

Either way, these neighbours took an instant dislike to me (leaving shopping trolleys in my front yard, throwing stuff in my back yard, etc. It’s a long list) but immediately became chummy with new neighbours on the other side.

The new neighbours have already graffitied my front and back fences and park their bikes in front of my property at 3:30am in the morning.

It sounds crazy to an outsider. I set up video cameras due to the suggestions of friends. The neighbours are now aware of the cameras and have been “testing” them, shining torches at them, staring at them or running past them intentionally.

The criminal activity is not just drug usage, but the theft of local bikes, stripping them down to their frames, spray painting them, and selling the scrap metal to fuel their addiction.

The weight of the bike frames is damaging the dividing fence between our two properties. I am reluctant to ring maintenance to fix the fence because there is a bike frame on the fence with the forks jutting Into my backyard in a dangerous fashion.

What’s really disturbing is that I have done nothing to deserve this treatment and somehow I am now a target.

So, whatever happens I need to be on a position to defend myself, either by looking like a better tenant during a Housing Trust inspection or being ready to move in the case of a transfer.

I’ve lived here 32 years and have never experienced harassment at this level before.

Today it rained and it seems to have cooled them off for a little bit at least for today.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

A Break From Gardening - Stocking Breakfasts for Hubby - by Sunscape

My body was telling me to take a break from the backbreaking work in the garden. I have to do something other than sit on my laurels, so I prepped breakfast meals for the freezer.

My hubby loves blueberry pancakes, so that was the first round I made.

I let them cool on a rack before stacking them to freeze.

I made plain pancakes too. Since I was still feeling peppy, I whipped off some Belgian Waffles; these are my favorite, but on Keto, I don't eat them.

Early last week, I made another breakfast casserole for him. He loves to thaw one out the night before and just reheats it. Simple for him to do.

I made two different types of smoothies for myself and froze them in the small bread tins. The following day, I put them into Ziploc bags. I just thaw one out and have it for my lunch.

It's raining all day, so no gardening for me once again. I started going through kitchen cupboards and decluttering what I no longer use. I guess I can continue with that project on this rainy day. At least that is not too bad on the back, lol.

An Update on Our Dear Lizelle

Thank you to Zac (@papilloncharity) for providing us with an update about @lizelle our wonderful community founder and leader.

Lizelle underwent radiation therapy for the tumours in her brain.

She came through that successfully and is now receiving a
hormone-based therapy up to the end of November.

They will reassess her situation and do more tests then.

For now, she has a carer and needs lots of rest.

Thank you for all your prayers and care shown.

THE MENU - A Silver Bloggers Guide To The Hive-iverse

The Silver Bloggers are a bunch of "crazy wise", life-loving bloggers who have "nothing" to do with precious metals.... however, you never know!

With quite a bit of life experience, we have now begun exploring all these new technologies around blockchains. In our early years, the "only" use we had for a chain was to lock the bicycle...

Today, in our Silver Bloggers' Community, we bring together young at heart like-minded humans and 'old souls' who are still connected to their inner child. It's not really about counting years. Though, to be a Silver Blogger you have to be a pre-millennial, most of us are from the famous Generation X.

The silver threads, besides the love of sharing our "wisdom," are:

an interest in learning more about blockchains, crypto,

asking lots of "dumb" questions

a compulsion to write about our life experiences - as a "library" for our children and our children's children
