The brakes started acting up; I had to pump the pedal repeatedly to get any decent stopping power, otherwise the pedal would drop all the way to the floor and it took forever to slow the car down. I'll admit I only know the basics when it comes to the braking system—I don't know much about how the ABS module works or how pressure is distributed through the system.

![1000513726.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/23tbwM8H5fhYfyKBHkhRuKeBY1nMSZu1HsxBiTox625xDxjLkDbu2zfLGmHd1LHgHVvGQ.jpg)

So I started with the basics, the stuff I know I can fix. I went ahead and checked the brake fluid reservoir. I noticed the color had changed; it looked dark brown, and I honestly remember the last fluid I put in being blue. I understand this can happen when the fluid isn't top quality, but it had never happened to me before, so I figured the smartest move was to flush it all out of the system, replace it with fresh fluid, and make sure this wasn't the reason the car lost its braking performance.

![1000513469.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoyP2Ajq6hNk9seQJ9pqvfPNwvP78NX2HAGqrBieXNvkqZ1usfb1zAPps4e1Eeyk7HZ.jpg)
![1000513468.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/Eq39zFawbNx9bp1ycZCytsWEguZ6wh5ppw7SjRF9KWpaEKWVstah5cSrgF1PAA2cZoF.jpg)

To figure out what brake fluid to use, the cap on the reservoir tells you right on it. This ride takes DOT 4; I did some research and the main difference compared to others is its higher boiling point. If the brake system heats up too much, the fluid can boil and create vapor bubbles, which drastically reduces braking force.

![1000513684.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EowG8GACBkmCzjs2FJRsDDkh4aFobjrjqYNtTi2DNAxmXNU822FGKEXsYFyNE21hUpg.jpg)

To bleed the system and get rid of any potential air pockets, you have to do all four wheels. If I recall correctly, the right way is to bleed them in an X pattern, starting with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder—which in my case would be the rear passenger side—and moving toward the front driver side. Then you hit the rear driver side and finish up on the front passenger side.

Days kept passing without me doing a thing, always making the excuse that I didn't have the money, but I’ve finally decided to make some progress—whether that means getting it fixed or finally putting it up for sale.

![1000504609.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/23x1BF8ZX5jd4fEnuFKje4SF87xTbTnz1RJz77zHSapp4EsAN9gkFSJ6N9ubBXrzzp9ZJ.jpg)

I stopped driving this car after a day when I was leaving to drop my kids off at school. Just a few feet from the house, it suddenly seized up and started making an awful clanking sound, like something was jammed tight inside. I shut it off immediately and pushed it back home. Ever since, I thought the engine had completely locked up, which kept me frustrated for a long time. But after spending the last three months getting my Chery Arauca back on the road, I feel motivated to tackle this issue myself.

![1000504495.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoyQTwcJLV5UsMpzoiNVEaPG17M3XhH9KJVfcvxWyJ3fucYT8QMC3aUutzAxj3eA7G2.jpg)

Documenting my process on this blog has been a great motivator, serving as a roadmap and a way to track my progress—even if nobody else reads it because the community feels pretty dead. That’s why I keep writing; I often look back at old posts to recall maintenance dates or remind myself how I solved a problem when a breakdown repeats itself.

![1000503115.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/23vi1oKxniEvXVrcdz5aKT7RU9mZhiNqnP458JBHU1wcAhfDCePSJwMjbR9yt8izH1YtS.jpg)

Every time I documented changing the timing belt kit, it helped refresh my memory on how to tear it down. That was the very first thing I did to begin disassembly. I had never completely removed the camshaft sprockets before—I had only loosened them enough to get the belt into position. This step forced me to do some research and figure out how much torque to apply when reassembling them.

![1000504490.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoptKUr6XhhgBEBTVUoPka6cA28moBcbibH5vY4M7xnpVcWa7K5UrLUwmc5nUv56XRh.jpg)

Another step I'd never done before was pulling the exhaust manifold. First, you have to remove the heat shield to reach the bolts securing it to the exhaust pipe. I noticed it’s actually better to unbolt it and leave it attached to the cylinder head; there are only three bolts securing it to the exhaust pipe, compared to six attaching it to the head, which are way easier to remove once the head is off the block.

![1000504489.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EptbYb9WPRS6hQyyVRxKNN8vQh7TShR1V7ZUF1yRTwdrnhWYuWxfdMHUwghPAEBS9F6.jpg)

I also noticed that the ignition coil bracket sitting on top of the thermostat housing connects to the head. To comfortably reach those three bolts, it’s best to pull out the battery and its tray to clear up some elbow room. The thermostat housing was also sealed with silicone, so once the bolts were out, I had to use a bit of muscle to break it free.

![1000504493.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoeFKckDMUFWYmiU2dPjUHqce6tZDy4PzWpvCixRoUhLcyoX2XXhnZZ2poYqLXV997u.jpg)

I was shocked by how sludged up the cylinder head was—it has a lot of caked-on old oil, which was clearly the root cause of the damage. You might be able to see in the photo what actually happened: the engine wasn't locked up after all, but rather a camshaft seized up in its journal due to oil starvation. You can see how the high heat from the friction literally melted the head's aluminum.

![1000503145.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EpEHpjjdebZka2d63QkD9BKpPpav74J4iP2SgXpzgJp2M873weoi2UU8NAAy5BxXz4f.jpg)

This kind of damage is usually irreversible, requiring a brand-new cylinder head, but down here in my country, there are machine shops that recondition them. I'll be taking it to one of these shops to see if it's salvageable and how much it’ll cost. It could run around $200, which is steep, but it beats dropping $700 on a new one.

That is pretty typical, so the plan now is to drive it carefully while constantly checking different parts until I am confident everything is running smoothly again.

![1000497969.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/23tvYHKSvpomw6FXFzXfWG2YDCgVFgD24hVhzu7mvMKX4GigcsWqUFmHvbf8CZMEga7kM.jpg)

Three days ago, I took it out for its first test drive and spotted a coolant leak in one of the radiator-to-engine hoses. It is a short section right below the ignition coil, sitting just above the transmission. Access is tight—I had to unbolt the shifter cable bracket just to reach one of the hose clamps.

![1000497970.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EpCCM2xhp4CAMa4jqtyGTubhCpq1BFQqL3tEo7mvR1yHrDQ5v9vW87pZrTidzPikd9C.jpg)

As you can see, I had to rig up a temporary splice just so I could drive the car and go buy a replacement hose the next day. It was not easy; I ended up working late into the night trying to get it to seat properly since the hose had lost its original molded bend. In the end, though, I made it work and picked up the new hose.

![1000497971.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EopsuZDJ728hTVjTjoQLtsMt7tMMyXtMAoHfdfgQ5AyPr2kwnSJpnSuMAyYTtaSDLjz.jpg)
![1000497972.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoiWck1xSvJcvR5SnfyadWhDchy2FGuCuMrfgf9rAJhjXBzFsRUVzcS7cbPeU65xKGH.jpg)

Installing the new one was no walk in the park either, as the top hose clamp kept interfering with one of the shifter cables. Once again, I had to unbolt the cable bracket to get it into position. It is amazing how such a small, seemingly simple job ended up taking so much time to wrap up.

![1000497660.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EpnEefq9gM6xDEf1QoXLaDq1xCqDNhobjDvCynPZw27R62XZ4RA1n7w99szmd1ziAqW.jpg)

Now I just have a few details left to iron out—like the brakes. The pedal goes all the way to the floor, and it only builds pressure after pumping it a few times. It could be low brake fluid, or a leak might have developed somewhere in the system while it was sitting. I will tackle that next.

After checking sensors, wiring, engine compression, and mechanical timing, I ended up checking the oil pressure. With a fully charged battery and a backup on hand, I cranked it over multiple times—taking care not to overheat the starter motor—until it finally fired up.

![1000493098.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/23w2m8PZzg2abjD2RyH1c8EQL4XVjzckZqjuvZ1LuWbfVDNqCUDZtMPGhwfCsRh6uQJg8.jpg)

After several days of electrical testing, the hydraulic lifters bled down, which made the engine struggle to start. This led me to drop the oil pan to inspect the engine for old oil sludge and contamination. If the lifters weren't pumping up properly, it was clear that oil circulation was severely compromised.

My suspicions were spot on. Upon removing the oil pan, I found a heavy buildup of sediment and hardened oil deposits at the bottom. Although I always performed oil changes on schedule, I didn't always use top-grade oil, which undoubtedly contributed to these consequences.

![1000491993.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoGxumn8RMfvJRioCLKEjMchG6fgfd4d4UtQtakfCZwpwHeMXGxoS3HDEf7GF4fBpN4.jpg)

In addition to this sludge, the oil pickup tube screen was severely clogged, explaining why oil wasn't reaching the top end with enough volume to properly pump up the lifters. As seen in the image, it was restricted by small particles of RTV silicone left over from a previous valve cover gasket replacement.

I usually clean engine parts with gasoline, but the fuel quality in my country has degraded so much that it no longer cuts through heavy grease effectively. So, I decided to purchase a heavy-duty degreaser called H-7. Since it's imported, it was a bit pricey, but it works exceptionally well at stripping away years of baked-on oil and sludge.

![1000493087.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/danielcarrerag/EoGxSUc8zPym5B51iZNhCmvnLfhgdoRJwhDxGXds5kWw6GWYdbevyRi8bBPEfQ1rwtu.jpg)

As you can see in the photos, it turned out remarkably clean. The oil pan was left completely free of debris, especially where the oil pickup tube sits, which is the most critical area. The pickup tube itself came out extremely clean; cleaning the internal passages was the hardest part, but it cleared out completely without any remaining restriction. I reinstalled everything, and the oil pressure warning light on the dash turned off—the engine is now properly lubricating the cylinder head valve train.

A photo of the car I took a while back.

I got to work tackling a plastic repair project on my father's 1982 C3 Corvette gauge console. Decades of heat and age had left the housing cracked, broken, and missing a few structural sections altogether.

Originally I started on modeling it to print another on my 3d printer, but the more I looked at it and tried to decide how it would be sectioned, the more I realised that there is actually not that much wrong with it, so I decided to repair and rebuild the original plastic trim piece using a combination of a plastic staple welding gun and plastic steel epoxy compound.

🧰 Tools for the Job

The plastic welding gun and hot staples used for stitching the cracked plastic back together.

⚡ Stitching Up the Structural Cracks

The 1982 C3 Corvette gauge console housing sitting on the table ready for repair.

I started by tackling the 2 pieces that had broken off the housing. Using the plastic staple welder, I melted hot metal staples directly across the fracture lines to bridge the breaks and lock the plastic back into alignment.

Hot staples melted across the cracks to restore structural strength.

Stitching the corners together along the inner mounting edges.

Reinforcing the outer walls with multiple overlapping staples.

📐 Recreating Missing Material and Custom Molds

With the main structural cracks stitched together, I had to address a completely missing section of the frame. To span the gap, I strung copper wire between the staple ends to create a rigid skeleton for the new material.

Rigging a wire matrix to bridge the completely missing section of plastic.

To hold the assembly square while forming the missing piece, I clamped a ruler lined with masking tape across the span to prevent the epoxy from sticking. I placed a small drill bit underneath the tape to match and maintain the original factory 'V' channel profile. This will be improved on when the epoxy cures and I can remove the ruler.

Clamping the ruler and tape mold setup to shape the missing section.

🧪 Applying Plastic Steel and Filling Holes

With everything clamped securely in place, I broke out the plastic steel. I have learnt from previous experience that it leaves a coating on your hands. Wearing nitrile gloves, I pressed the compound into the wire framework and filled in various extra holes that shouldn't have been there.

Remnants on the gloves from mixing and working with the plastic steel.

Plastic steel pressed into unwanted holes and anchoring around the staple ends.

Filling the missing section and using the ruler setup to hold the profile while it cures.

Once the plastic steel fully sets, the next step will be trimming down the exposed staple legs and sanding everything back smooth before paint.

Have you ever rebuilt missing interior trim pieces like this, or do you usually just hunt down a replacement panel? Drop your tips in the comments below!

Wow, it's incredible! We are already 3 years old as a Community. And it is precisely on March 19, 2021, our founder @josuemonterola, along with his wife @elizabeths14, decided to start this journey.

At the beginning Hive Motors was just a dream, a motivation for its founder to continue creating content related to engines and mechanics in general. With the passing of time others joined this initiative and since then the community grew, also accepting content on home electricity, electro auto, repair and maintenance of household appliances, upholstery and painting of cars and recently, we decided to accept two topics that although they have nothing to do with engines, as there was a need, were included in our niche, such as bicycle repairs and upholstery of furniture for cars.

![1000449550.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/48HAKKEmqnFusaPANBPom7Pig2MgLZQRE2MtrYY9P3T4TdmWEY9L4Z9rGbKfMbhWDD.png)

This community has been a challenge, but without a doubt today we are happy to have more than 1000 subscribers and many active members within the community. We are also grateful for the support of two great curation projects, such as @ocd, the first project that welcomed us, and @aliento, a friendly project that we have always been able to count on.

Today we are happy to celebrate this anniversary with you, we can not fail to mention a person who has a little over a year with us, being part of our team, this is @danielcarrerag, who supports us as a curator and also leaving that necessary feeback in the publications of our users. We also want to thank him for the creation of the new image of the community, which our members can use for their publications within Hive Motors, if you wish.

Greetings engine fanatics. On March 19, 2021 this community was born with the purpose that those of us who live day by day close to an engine or mechanics could make life here and also all those who have something that has an engine.

Since then, we have not made any update, so this is the first time we do it and we want to improve some things, so it is important that you read all this publication and find out about some improvements or changes that we will make.

![Hive Motors Community.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbRZ8K53bq7nVhDcDE3hqjvftRfmA9qyTGJtJdrdRq72YywpQwg2WX1K2fxuhcWYEcU.png)

In our description it says we accept:

Engines - General Mechanics - Engineering - Diesel - Refining - Parts Manufacturing - Motorcycles - Household Appliances.

We include: Maintenance of mechanical equipment, domestic appliances, maintenance of vehicles and motorbikes. However we will now also include:

-Vehicle Work on Brasswork and Painting: In this particular case, it must be carried out by you or to your vehicle. Not on a third party vehicle carried out by someone else.

-Electrical and Home Electrical or Electrical Wiring: Again, experience in work carried out by you or to a vehicle you own, carried out at your home.

-Welding work: Manufacture of parts, welding in general and well done. Blacksmith work.

-Bicycle Maintenance and Repair: In this case, not cycling, for that there are sporting communities and although bicycles do not have an engine, it also has mechanical parts that make it work.

![Hive Motors Community (2).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbRG9Zb7yApPBMTeuogCV2G7URK1MR9A5P1ESQb92ap8jiPVWGamKsFbRzSGG6NxwBM.png)

As in every community, in Hive Motors we have rules of coexistence, which are easy to follow and we attach some others:

▪︎Original Content/No Plagiarism:
Nothing better than writing your own content, telling your experience, whether or not you are a mechanic or subject matter expert, we value unique content and not copies. If it's about work done on your vehicle, appliances or home, you can talk about your experience, expenses and repair, no need to plagiarize or copy things from the web.

▪︎ For processes, own photos, this is mandatory:
For the step by step you share with us we want to see photos of yours of it, show us how you did it.

We accept pictures as a reference for experiences or anecdotes, but your own pictures always add quality:
We know that sometimes when we want to explain something we don't have certain images, that's why we allow images as reference, for explanations or examples.

▪︎Language: English and/or native language:
We believe it is well explained. We only accept publications in English or bilingual.

▪︎No discrimination or hate speech:
Being kind and grateful certainly opens doors.

Now we will have...

▪︎Minimum of 350 words:
To maintain standards and also because we know that there is always a lot to say when it comes to an experience or repair, we ask for a minimum of 350 words, counting in one language only. This means that if your publication is bilingual, it must be more than twice that amount in words.

▪︎Videos preferably uploaded from 3speak, in English or with English subtitles if you speak another language.

![Hive Motors Community (4).png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbkbMQUHv1JLG1fWFFSsxz6NXUE8TSBVgr8X7y4DketKW6TjpXisxMy91Fnp8CRGuTy.png)

We introduce a new member of the Hive Motors team and thank another one that although he has been a bit absent he will continue to be present.

First we thank @jesustiano for his support for months in the community, as a commented moderator, he is still part of the community as a commenting member, but some family issues have kept him away, we hope they will be solved soon.

And we welcome as moderator @danielcarrerag who will be working hand in hand with the Hive Motors team to take this community forward, also creating and contributing new ideas. *ENGLISH*

Mechanics is the motors that moves the world.

When we talk about mechanics, we talk about mechanisms and everything in our environment moves through it.

Hive Motors Community has been created with the purpose of sharing knowledge about this great world of mechanics. Here you can talk from a small appliance motors to a ship engine.

In our community you can write about mechanics in general: engines, heavy machinery, mechanical engineering, motorcycles, rectification and manufacturing of parts, maintenance, electromechanics, among others related to this topic.

![Hive_Motors-01.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbkL3xTSj8S9XWxtqyLaQoG4JC7hA4uxNPMpwmjPuME56vjcZqiDtjMB7FtePTWgEnx.png)
Objectives

▪︎In our community, besides sharing content about mechanical processes or experiences, we are also willing to give advice or guides for those who do not know about any topic related to Hive Motors.

▪︎We will also have curations as other poryectos join, so there will be compilations of the voted posts.

▪︎We want to grow as a community, that there is original and quality content in it, the more content creators we have here, we will make contests.

![Hive_Motors-01.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbkL3xTSj8S9XWxtqyLaQoG4JC7hA4uxNPMpwmjPuME56vjcZqiDtjMB7FtePTWgEnx.png)
Rules

As in any community, in Hive Motors we have rules, which are easy to follow:

▪︎Original Content / No Plagiarism:
Nothing better than writing your own content, tell your experience, whether or not you are a mechanic or an expert in the field, we appreciate unique content and not copies.

▪︎For the processes, photos of your own:
For the step by step you share with us we want to see pictures of you of it, show us how you did it.

▪︎We accept pictures for references:
We know that sometimes when we want to explain something we don't have certain images, that's why we allow images for reference, for explanations or examples.

▪︎Language: English and/or native language:
We believe this is well explained. We only accept publications in English or bilingual.

▪︎No discrimination or hate speech:
Being kind and grateful certainly opens doors for us.

![Hive_Motors-01.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbkL3xTSj8S9XWxtqyLaQoG4JC7hA4uxNPMpwmjPuME56vjcZqiDtjMB7FtePTWgEnx.png)

![Hive_Motors-01.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/hive-motors/23tbkL3xTSj8S9XWxtqyLaQoG4JC7hA4uxNPMpwmjPuME56vjcZqiDtjMB7FtePTWgEnx.png)
Reglas
