I worked in the stadium when I was so young that I can't believe it was legal and I barely remember any of it. I have followed very few college football teams in my life for all of it, but I have followed Nebraska. I am a true fan and always will be.

They were a dominant team in the 80's and started to slip a bit after Tom Osborne left the team after a ton of seasons at the helm. Shortly thereafter the team has been rather average, with a few trips to some slightly meaningful bowls but never any real contention for a national title. It just shows how important a good head coach actually is for a football program at any level.

I had hoped this victory would turn some heads and maybe get Nebraska a nod for the top-25, but they weren't really even considered. The win was a good one, or so it would appear, but there is more to a team than just their W/L ratio, and the experts know that. This is why they are not top-25 and are unlikely to be this season unless they can pull off an upset victory against Indiana next weekend.

Here's why:

Nebraska handily defeated Mich State and that is a good thing because of name recognition. But the downside of this is that Mich State's name is a lot bigger than their football program is. Michigan State has gotten basically wrecked by any team they have played that has a name that football fans even recognize. It's not really that big of a deal when you defeat Toledo and Eastern Michigan for your only 2 wins of the season.

They sort of held their own against Notre Dame but still lost the game pretty badly (although Notre Dame beat them by LESS than Nebraska did and ND is ranked number 3 at the moment.)

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/sports.guy55/EogMoXqY2ghdFB1AuQ8w2pzDqsw6hKX1JJfHppVJqCufxzDpEDRkAW4iMWXybTJ2zKf.png)
[src](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTiE7uLtNOxKGkyijiMFU7CTvRxXALkwVZfnSRYCf8DfKae9gZefCXK68g&s=10)

We need to dig into the numbers to understand why Nebraska isn't ranked in the top 25 and here are some stats to consider.

In the game vs. Michigan State, Nebraska failed to accomplish as much as would be required on offense to really turn some heads. Sure, they scored 4 touchdowns in the game and allowed only 1 but these TD's took ages and as is usual for Nebraska, their passing game isn't really as fantastic as we want to see. They averaged less than 8 yards per pass (on completed passes only) and while this slow burn down the field is very typical of Nebraska football, it isn't the sort of thing that really gets you noticed. It seems as though Nebraska rarely goes for long passing plays and instead opts for an explosive and relentless crawl down the field. Is this effective? Well it is to a degree, but they haven't really been tested by a "good" defense yet this year.

Their only victories that the press even paid attention to was vs. Michigan State and Maryland and if we were to say that neither of those teams are very good, we would be correct. There is no reason to focus on either one of them this year.

Nebraska failed on almost every offense benchmark vs Michigan State including third down conversion, yards per play, and red-zone conversion rate. That's all fine and dandy when you are up by 14 points at halftime, but against a good team when it really counts, that is not enough and relies too much on the team you are playing against to be bad rather than you being good.

The Nebraska defense looked really good in the game vs. the Spartans, but again, this could be due to how "bad" MS is rather than how incredible the Nebraska defense is.

The 3rd quarter of this game was embarrassing. They barely moved the ball down the field at all and while they held Michigan State to just 3 points in that quarter, they didn't look like the better team at all for 1/4 of the game. This can't happen if you want to be top-25.

Things could go terribly wrong for the Cornhuskers in the rest of the season as their true tests are coming up. Next week they have Indiana, then Oregon, then they get a couple of games that should be gimmeys, then they face Ohio State and Iowa and I fear that they are going to lose all of these, perhaps badly.

New York Yankees with their backs against the wall

The American League Division Series between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays has taken an unexpected turn. Holding a 2-0 lead, the Rays have the Yankees against the wall, just one game away from elimination. This outcome is no fluke; rather, it stems from a series of factors that have decisively tipped the scales in Tampa Bay's favor.

source

The first decisive factor has been the Rays' "small ball" philosophy. Their offensive approach—relying on contact, speed, and capitalizing on opponent errors—has proven lethal. In the pivotal fifth inning of Game 2, Tampa Bay manufactured a four-run rally using not only three hits but also slow rollers and aggressive baserunning that kept constant pressure on the New York defense. Players like Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero reached base to spark the attack, while Chandler Simpson’s speed forced an error that allowed a key run to score. This style of play, which prioritizes putting the ball in play, has baffled the Yankees' pitchers.

In contrast, the Yankees' offense has been virtually non-existent. The team has managed just five hits over 18 innings, with backup catcher Ben Rice accounting for three of them and serving as the only source of run production. The absence of three-time MVP Aaron Judge due to a calf injury has left an impossible void to fill. Hitters in the heart of the lineup—such as Luis García Jr., Spencer Jones, and Jazz Chisholm Jr.—have combined to go 0-for-33 with 11 strikeouts in the series, a statistic that underscores the depth of their offensive slump.

While the Rays' pitching has been solid, the Yankees' defense has been disastrous. In Game 2, New York committed four errors—including three in the first inning alone—allowing Tampa Bay to jump out to an early lead. These errors not only gifted runs to the opposition but also forced star starter Cam Schlittler to pitch with constant traffic on the bases, driving up his pitch count and shortening his outing. The Rays' defense, meanwhile, has been impeccable, leading the American League in defensive efficiency during the regular season.

Ultimately, Tampa Bay's pitching has been the key to containing an offense that—even without Judge—remains dangerous. Drew Rasmussen dominated the first game, pitching 7.2 hitless innings. In the second game, Freddy Peralta held the Yankees to one run over 4.2 innings, and the bullpen—one of the best in Major League Baseball—handled the rest without giving an inch. Yankees starter Cam Schlittler could not withstand the pressure and was pulled from the game in the fifth inning after allowing four runs.

sourcesource

In short, the combination of the Rays' offensive approach, the Yankees' hitting slump, their defensive errors, and Tampa Bay's superior pitching has created a perfect storm. With the upcoming games taking place at Yankee Stadium, New York has a chance to bounce back, but the path to a comeback is extremely narrow.

In the past 5 years or so he has crashed out of many tournaments because he is a hot head and seems to have some level of difficulty controlling his temper. I've seen multiple tournaments where he was fined for saying something rude to an umpire in another language (this one is disputed) and while there is no rule against destroying your own equipment on purpose it is frowned upon and the officials can dock you points if you do too much of it.

Mostly he loses his cool and then lashes out at some inanimate object.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/sports.guy55/23w2ipJQ38yyT7FfMNHAgHM9E5V3NUDy7hz232QqwjhrFxczVfd2B95hmgToHMS6C8WXn.png)

He was doing very well in the match also although he was constantly failing to close break points and right before he was tossed out of the tournament he was 1-19 on break point chances. There was at least 2 situations where he was 3 points up and just needed one more to win a set and failed to do so. When you go up 40-0, most of the time you are going to close it out, but he failed over and over again and I was actually quite proud of him and impressed that he was keeping his cool.

But then, he wasn't really keeping his cool. He was bottling it up and after a particular point I guess some of that rage snuck out.

I saw it when it happened though and before the cameras even caught on I said "oh, this can't be good."

Novak had just won a rather long rally and in the previous set Medvedev was broken to go down 5-3 in the second set. The match wasn't over, but Daniil was clearly getting frustrated and when he gets frustrated his game starts to slip historically.

After Novak's shot stayed in he lashed out and hit the ball up in the air and purely by chance, it hit a fan square in the face. Now many are calling this fan a baby for being escorted away for medical treatment but the thing is it doesn't matter at all if you even hit anyone in the crowd. These DQ's are not determined by how much damage you do, they are determined by whether or not you lashed out in an unsportsmanlike way, which he did.

Daniil looked a bit dejected after it happened, but he didn't really even argue with the match officials when it was determined that he was disqualified.

There is an important distinction to make here. If a ball flies off and hits a fan and it was an accidental part of the regular game there is no problem. But play was already finished on this point and he was clearly lashing out in frustration. Even if he hadn't hit anyone this would still be a disqualification-eligible situation, so everyone can leave the fan alone about being a bit of a baby about taking a tennis ball to the face.

While there is no reason to start a gofundme just yet, Daniil doesn't just get disqualified from this match, he forfeits all of his tournament winnings as well as ATP points that he was getting because of it. The first thing likely doesn't matter to Medvedev at all but the second thing does.

Then Zidane changed the game, and Michael Olise turned the final minutes into a highlight reel.

Football can change very quickly.

But even by football standards, what happened at the Stade de France was ridiculous.

Belgium were leading France 1–0 after Dodi Lukébakio's 35th-minute goal. For most of the evening, Belgium had something to protect and France had a problem to solve.

Then everything changed.

Désiré Doué equalised in the 77th minute.

Rayan Cherki put France ahead four minutes later.

And then Michael Olise decided he wasn't finished.

The Bayern Munich winger scored in the 88th minute and again in stoppage time.

France 4–1 Belgium.

Four goals in 13 minutes.

And somehow, Olise was involved in three of them.

Olise was on another level

Let's talk about that second-half cameo.

Olise came off the bench alongside Cherki and Doué, and suddenly France looked like a completely different attacking team.

He provided the cross for Cherki's equaliser, then scored twice himself.

The first was a composed finish after combining with Doué.

The second came just three minutes later, with Olise finishing from the left side of the box.

That's not just a good substitute appearance.

That's a player coming onto the pitch and changing the entire story of the match.

And perhaps that's what makes France so frightening right now.

Zidane has ridiculous options

Zinedine Zidane didn't need to completely rebuild his team.

He simply looked towards his bench.

Olise.

Cherki.

Doué.

Three players who hadn't started the match.

They combined to turn a 1–0 deficit into a 4–1 victory.

That's incredible squad depth.

And it creates a very different problem for opponents.

You might survive France's starting XI.

But what happens when Zidane looks towards the bench?

Belgium couldn't survive the final 13 minutes

To be fair, Belgium didn't have a terrible match for 77 minutes.

They led.

They defended their advantage.

They had restricted France for long periods.

But once Doué equalised, the momentum completely disappeared.

France suddenly had space.

The confidence returned.

And Belgium couldn't stop the avalanche.

The final statistics tell the story: France finished with 66.5% possession, 23 shots and eight on target, compared with Belgium's five shots and two on target.

So perhaps the 4–1 scoreline actually understates how much pressure France eventually created.

But Olise is the bigger story for me

There is something fascinating about Michael Olise right now.

He isn't simply becoming a useful player for France.

He is becoming the kind of player who can change a match by himself.

We already saw it when France beat Belgium 1–0 in Brussels.

Olise came off the bench and scored an extraordinary solo winner in the 88th minute.

Now, less than two weeks later, he has produced another match-winning performance against the same opponent this time with two goals and an assist.

That's becoming a pattern.

And France are going to love it.

The scary part? Mbappé wasn't even needed tonight

France have Kylian Mbappé.

Everyone knows what he can do.

But tonight, France didn't need him to rescue the game.

They had Olise.

They had Cherki.

They had Doué.

That's the thing that stands out.

This isn't a team dependent on one superstar to produce something magical every time the match becomes difficult.

There are solutions everywhere.

And Zidane gets credit

This was also a coaching victory.

The substitutions worked.

Not eventually.

Almost immediately.

Doué scored.

Olise assisted Cherki.

Olise scored twice.

That's exactly what you want from your substitutes.

Zidane's France are now top of Group A1 with 10 points after four matches, with Italy three points behind.

It's still early in Zidane's tenure, so we shouldn't start predicting trophies already.

But there is clearly something developing.

What I like about this France team isn't simply the scoreline.

It's the number of different ways they can hurt you.

You can defend Mbappé.

Then Olise appears.

You can try to control Olise.

Then Cherki creates something.

You can survive Cherki.

Then Doué attacks you.

And when three substitutes can enter a match and completely change it in 13 minutes, you start to understand why France remain one of the most frightening squads in international football.

Belgium had the lead.

France had the answers.

And Michael Olise had the final word.

Four goals in 13 minutes.

Two goals for Olise.

An amazing week for the @sportstalksocial community comes to an end, but we thought before ending this week and getting back to work on Monday, why not appreciate some blogs by having a Blog of the Week.

Blog of the Week is something we will try to do every Sunday to mention some blogs we feel have good writing and picture quality as well as good explanation and with some emotions as well. To choose only 5 blogs out of like hundreds is not easy, so if you feel that your blog should have been mentioned then keep in mind that selecting good blogs is not easy. We will try to mention new users every week so that we don’t repeat the same users.

Here are the Blogs of the Week

We are here, and back with another Topic Writing Contest. There was a huge gap in between which is unfair to our members of the community, but now the goal is to try and make more fun contests like this often. So let's get in to the topic and the rules.

Topic for this week is "Your Favorite Sporting Moment"

We would like to hear a special moment that you always remember or think of. It could be in any sport and we would like it to be detailed like how long ago this was, feelings, how you tell people about it, what you feel now and every detail during the match or ceremony depending on what you write. These are some tips to get started. We woud like the blog to be as passionate and emotional as the moment so that it feels like we were there 😄.

Rules and How to join the contest

1️⃣ You're only allowed to make one blog for this contest.

2️⃣ The blog can be written in English or any other language with English translation.

3️⃣ Title should include Sports Talk Social TWC, Example (Title - Sports Talk Social TWC)

4️⃣ Comment with the link of your entry/blog for the contest.

Deadline & Final

Last day to enter the contest is 18 August 2023 at 23:59 UTC and as it stands and if things go well, the result day where we announce top 3 will be on 21 August 2023.

Last but not the least, make sure to post your blogs on Social Media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, twitter and don't forget to tag/mention @Sportstalksocial and use the hashtag #sportstalksocial & #TWC as well.
