Human life unfolds in a delicate balance between what we are and what we need in order to be. When that balance breaks, questions arise that are not mere philosophical speculations, but silent cries of an existence torn between dignity and survival. What good is life if we cannot satisfy our human needs? The answer seems cruel: very little, because life without minimum material conditions becomes a daily sentence, a permanent effort not to disappear.

Work, that activity that should dignify and open doors, becomes an irony when the salary is not enough to feed us, buy medicine, or enjoy recreation. Why work, then? And yet we work, because not doing so is worse; because hunger does not wait and illness does not negotiate. But that work that barely sustains the body while withering the spirit reveals a profound contradiction: human effort should guarantee life, not merely prevent death.

And then another uncomfortable question appears: are we alive despite breathing when we cannot do the elementary things of human beings? Breathing is the most basic act, the minimum threshold of biological existence. But human life is not exhausted in oxygen. Eating with dignity, healing pain, playing, laughing, creating, resting: that is what makes us human. When all of that is missing, breath becomes routine and the body moves forward while something essential fades away.

How can we live without our well-being deteriorating after several days without electricity, connection to the world, or drinking water? The answer is that it cannot be done, at least not without paying a very high price. Electricity and water are not luxuries: they are conditions of possibility for modern life. Without them, time becomes a threat, isolation deepens, the body sickens. Well-being does not withstand deprivation indefinitely; it cracks, it crumbles, it ceases to be well-being and becomes pure endurance.

All of this leads to the final question, the most painful one: am I alive because I breathe, or am I dead in life? Perhaps the answer is not absolute. To be dead in life is to inhabit a body that functions while the reasons to live fade away. It is to breathe without a horizon, to work without reward, to exist without enjoyment. But recognizing that death in life is already an act of lucidity, and lucidity, even though it neither feeds nor illuminates, is the first step toward demanding what is rightful: a life that is not reduced to breathing, but that truly deserves to be lived.

Pero, rara vez nos detenemos a pensar que también necesitamos desaprender. Desaprender no es olvidar ni borrar lo vivido; es cuestionar lo que dimos, por cierto, soltar hábitos que ya no funcionan y abrir espacio para nuevas formas de pensar, sentir y relacionarnos. Es por ello que en esta vida nuestra que cambia a gran velocidad, la capacidad de desaprender se ha vuelto tan valiosa como la de aprender.

En nuestras relaciones interpersonales, cargamos equipajes heredados: así se debe amar, esto es lo que significa ser fuerte, no se habla de ciertas emociones. Muchos de esos aprendizajes provienen de la familia, la escuela o la cultura, y aunque en su momento nos protegieron, hoy pueden convertirse en muros.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes lo que significó para mí mi estancia en el Museo de Arte Cubano de Topes de Collantes. Llegué después de subir por caminos de montaña, entre pinos y niebla, y desde que entré sentí que el lugar tenía una atmósfera realmente especial.

Antes de entrar me fotografié junto a una de las figuras de mármol blanco que simbolizan las estaciones del año. Al preguntar por qué hay solo tres estatuas nos dijeron que una se había roto.

El edificio, sobrio y acogedor, parecía guardar no solo obras, sino también la memoria de una región. Recorrí sus salas con calma, deteniéndome en cada cuadro, en los colores, en las texturas y en las historias que los artistas cubanos habían dejado sobre el lienzo.

Me impresionó ver cómo el arte dialogaba con el paisaje de Escambray: la fuerza de la naturaleza, la vida cotidiana, las raíces y los sueños de un pueblo. En silencio, escuché el eco de mis pasos sobre la madera y sentí que el tiempo se detenía.

No era solo una visita turística; era un encuentro íntimo con la cultura cubana. A través de las obras, pude entender mejor la sensibilidad de una isla que resiste, crea y celebra. Al salir, el aire fresco de la montaña me devolvió al presente, pero algo dentro de mí había cambiado.

Me llevé la impresión de que Topes de Collantes no solo ofrece naturaleza, sino también un refugio para el alma y para el arte. Sin duda, siempre volvería a este museo, porque cada rincón invita a mirar con otros ojos y a valorar lo nuestro. Fue una estancia muy breve, pero profunda, de esas que se quedan grabadas en la memoria.

Today I want to share with you what my visit to the Museum of Cuban Art in Topes de Collantes meant to me. I arrived after traveling along mountain roads, amidst pine trees and mist, and from the moment I stepped inside, I felt that the place possessed a truly special atmosphere.

Before entering, I had my photo taken next to one of the white marble figures that symbolize the seasons of the year. When I asked why there were only three statues, I was told that one had broken.

The building—sober yet welcoming—seemed to hold not just artworks, but the memory of an entire region. I wandered through its rooms at a leisurely pace, pausing before each painting to take in the colors, the textures, and the stories that Cuban artists had captured on canvas.

I was struck by how the art engaged in a dialogue with the landscape of the Escambray mountains: the raw power of nature, the rhythms of daily life, and the roots and dreams of a people. In the silence, I heard the echo of my own footsteps on the wooden floor and felt as though time had come to a standstill.

This was more than just a tourist visit; it was an intimate encounter with Cuban culture. Through these works, I gained a deeper understanding of the sensibility of an island that persists, creates, and celebrates. As I stepped back outside, the crisp mountain air brought me back to the present, yet something within me had shifted.

I left with the impression that Topes de Collantes offers not only nature, but also a sanctuary for the soul and for art. I would certainly return to this museum, as every corner invites you to see things through fresh eyes and to cherish what is uniquely our own. It was a brief visit, yet a profound one—the kind that remains etched in one’s memory.

Cueva de los Panaderos (Bakers' Cave)—also known as Cueva del Silencio (Cave of Silence)—is one of the most significant karst cavities in the province of Holguín, Cuba. Located in the municipality of Gibara, this cavern is notable for its vast extent and geological complexity, as well as its archaeological value, as it contains examples of indigenous rock art. In this post, I will share the key features of the cave, based on the work conducted by our researchers from the Geological Service of Cuba.

Geographic location

The cave is situated in the municipality of Gibara, in the northern part of Holguín province, specifically within the "Polja del Cementerio" (Cemetery Polje)—a large-scale karst depression. The Polja del Cementerio measures approximately 1,250 meters from east to west and 500 meters from north to south. It houses a system of 29 caves with a total combined length of over 11 kilometers, making it one of the largest speleological systems in Cuba.

Geological and geographic characteristics

Cueva de los Panaderos is a karst cavity featuring more than two kilometers of explored passages, distributed across up to four distinct levels; it is the most extensive cave within the Polja del Cementerio. Its internal topography is predominantly horizontal, though it includes vertical drops of up to 32 meters, reaching sea level and terminating in underground rivers with crystal-clear water.

The main entrance is located at the bottom of a large sinkhole, from which a gently sloping passage leads to spacious chambers containing secondary formations such as stalactites, stalagmites, and columns.

Rock types

The rocks that make up the cave belong to the Gibara Formation, which consists of massive, compact, medium- to coarse-grained, fossiliferous limestones. These range in color from yellowish-gray to white or grayish-white and date from the Early to Middle Cretaceous period. These lithologies make the area of great geological interest, with the "Cueva de los Panaderos" (Cave of the Bakers) serving as a representative example of karstification in carbonate rocks.

Vegetation and soils

The vegetation in the vicinity of the cave grows on skeletal red rendzina soils, varying as one moves from the coast toward the interior. A coastal xeromorphic scrub predominates, transitioning into a shrubland composed of various species, and eventually into a semi-deciduous forest in the higher parts of the plain. In these elevated areas, it is still possible to observe native flora such as the ceiba (kapok tree, Ceiba pentandra), jobo (Spondias mombin), baría (Gerascanthus gerascanthoides), and almácigo (gumbo-limbo, Bursera simaruba). Regarding the soils, reddish-brown fersiallitic soils prevail in the municipality of Gibara; however, in the karst environment, skeletal red rendzina soils with rocky outcrops are dominant.

Geological and Scientific Importance

The Cueva de los Panaderos (Cave of the Bakers) holds significant geological and scientific value. It is estimated to be around 90 million years old, having formed during the Early Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era. The cavern serves as a key site for speleology and the study of rock art in the region. It is home to several endemic species—such as a type of pseudoscorpion and a cave cricket (recently cataloged in Cuba)—as well as various species of bats.

The underground rivers harbor aquatic species adapted to life in a subterranean lake environment. In the "Polja del Cementerio" (Cemetery Polje), researchers have identified blind, light-avoiding (lucifugous) fish—unique to this area—which shun light and feed on shrimp and other crustaceans. This singular biodiversity makes the cave a natural laboratory for biological and ecological research.
