Welcome to the Weekly Writing Prompt from The Ink Well

We provide one weekly writing prompt for short story writers. You may choose to use the prompt to write a fictional story (made up from your imagination) or a creative nonfiction story (based on your real-life experiences).

IMPORTANT: To be considered for curation, you must include one of these tags on your post:

Fictional stories: #fiction
Creative nonfiction stories: #creativenonfiction

You must also read and comment on the work of two other community members. Remember: We look for this when we curate your story. If we don't see this engagement, we will either provide a reminder or skip curating your post.

It is also very helpful to the admin team when authors add Fiction or Creative Nonfiction (or CNF for short) to the story title!

And we have a winner! Congrats to @gabmr for his story, No Future Glitch.

Here's what our curators had to say:

@gabmr offers an unconventional science fiction story that deals with a number of evolving issues. Think the Matrix, or Running Man, but go beyond that. A young man describes a nightmarish environment in which people dance with each other in a way that seems more predatory than social. We assume these are people, anyway. By the end of the story we wonder, as the young man discovers he himself is a cyborg. The story is complicated, and it may take a second read to pick up all the clues, but they are there. It's a disquieting piece, without having any overt signs of horror. Beautifully written.

This week's prompt is: "Spooky."

Halloween is nearly here, and for those of you who take delight in celebrating this annual ode to all that is frightening, it is your time to shine!

There are many things you can do with this prompt. Write a spooky tale of fear and fright, whether it's about jack-o-lanterns that come to life, a tale of the supernatural that will strike fear in the hearts of readers like the classic tale of the headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow , or a tale of spooky encounters on Halloween night.

@neotopher writes a clever and delightfully disturbing story about a man who discovers in the oddest way that he time travels. If for any reason he should trip or stumble, once the impact occurs, he is back in his bed at the very start of that day. Although one cannot help recalling the movie Groundhog Day, this story is so fresh and unexpected that I fell in love with it!

Short Story Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Nightmare."

As we all know, a nightmare is a very bad dream in which terrible things happen. Perhaps you witness your own demise, or that of a loved one. Perhaps you are chased by monsters, or evil spirits emerge from the walls in your horrible dream. It is a huge relief to awaken from such a nightmare to discover that it was not real. Whew!

But the word "nightmare" is not limited to actual sleep or actual dreams. It also pertains to situations and circumstances. Nightmare jobs. Nightmare relationships. Nightmare scenarios. With Halloween just a few weeks away, this is a great time to think about scary situations and to write imaginative tales about witches, goblins, monsters, evil wrong-doers and more.

Short Story Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Rude awakening."

“Rude awakening” is an expression for a sudden and often unpleasant realization that things are not as easy. Or a person might have a sudden awareness that there is a cumbersome glitch in plans. Or perhaps a letter, email or text arrives that delivers a "slap-in-the-face" message that the receiver was not expecting.

A "rude awakening" can be literal — for example, a person might wake up abruptly to an alarming sound, unexpected visitor, or dangerous situation. But more often the rude awakening is symbolic. It is the moment when reality shatters someone’s expectations. A new employee might discover that a dream job is a nightmare. A traveler might learn that an idyllic destination isn’t what it seemed. A person who felt confident in a relationship might suddenly realize their feelings aren’t reciprocated, or that the simple, easy happiness they believed in is just a layer on top of a very complicated truth.

I loved this story by @mmam. The author gives us a fully developed, sympathetic character that everyone refers to as 'snake'. It would seem that snake is an aspersion on his character. It's not. The man risks his life, time after time, to catch snakes that have found their way into people's homes. He takes no money for this. The charm of this story is that the author allows us into the snake catcher's mind as he does his work. There is not bravery so much as generosity. He is doing what no one else can do as safely. Lovely story.

Here's what our curators had to say:

What a ride @gabmr takes us on in his story. His most dynamic character is out of control. That is, the character he has created for one of his books. The character is so real that he declares independence from the pen and assumes a physical presence. He actually visits the author in his home. The only remedy for this is for the author to burn the book he is writing and destroy the character entirely. This is a romp, with a serious side to it, and @gabmr pulls it off brilliantly.

This week's prompt is: "It's a tough job, but someone's got to do it."

“It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it” is an expression used when a task is difficult, unpleasant, or simply something most people would rather avoid, but it still needs to be done. The phrase can be sincere, expressing determination or a sense of duty, but it is also frequently used humorously or ironically. Someone lounging beside a swimming pool with a cold drink, for example, might jokingly say, “It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.”
