It still feels like autumn is quite a stretch away over in Yerevan. There might be the odd cooler evening or five minutes of rainfall, but the warmth still very much feels present, as do the clear skies. You see people walking around in t-shirts still, few seem to wear anything more than that going during the daylight hours. Leaves have barely even started to fall here, let alone change colour. Yerevan is a weird place for the seasons. Scorching summers and short autumns with a long winter. To experience the true changing of the seasons you need to travel more north or south, to which even there the seasons are slow to shift. Dilijan is still just turning colour, for example.

![autumn bw 3.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23tvXvAuadaTz8gjSdv9bmXkkD96849VcAxPGLcCyUqzCDcYrjdQJM34ZsfWNAeeqjyT2.jpg)

But there are some signs of change. It is definitely more tolerable to be outside in the evenings. I have wanted to be out more and more as the sun goes down, to which the sun goes down much earlier now. There's definitely a bit less light. Not that I mind that. I kinda like that low light, cosy atmosphere of autumn and winter. The feeling that things are slower, cooler, and people may seem to have less energy, but nothing feels like it's in a rush to do or be somewhere. It's like everyone's general energy decreases a bit and the baseline average of relaxation appears. Perhaps a bit harder to wake up in the mornings, perhaps a bit more of a chore to get out and do things with less energy. But honestly, I've always kind of liked that, even back in England.

![autumn bw 2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23tvVgyZpjVyXZjSf4ULSGZzmTv8m5xZJ8M4FZUy8QfHUbzoTxUF8RYQHHomm7WsiYZ5J.jpg)

Here, streets feel emptier. I mean, even in summer they were but for a different reason: it was too hot to be outside! People only went out in the evenings when it was tolerable, now people sort of just float about at any hour. Unless it's raining, Armenians act like a bit of a rain is poison to them, which is funny to see given their reaction to the heat as well. There isn't really an inbetween here. Parks remain largely empty. Maybe a few older men drinking in them (it's legal to drink in public here). Or a few teenagers hanging out before it gets a bit too late (there's also a culture for not being out that late unless you're an older male). Anyway, I've missed photographing the slow passing of time here. While others feel a bit lower in their energy, I feel like mine is largely returning!

I made these images black and white because the lack of colour and low light in this area made and colour just seem a bit dull. Not something you can save with editing. But I liked that they're more atmospheric without the colour anyway. Also my usual love for the 21 : 9 aspect ratio! Shot on the Sony A6000 and with the 35mm F1.8 lens, so really about a 60mm lens on full frame camera.

Found this on Letterboxd a few weeks ago when searching for some unique horror films to check out. More interest appeared recently with the trailer of an upcoming 4k release of the 70s original. Now, if you know even a little bit about film, you'll know that the 70s was riddled with chaos when it came to the film industry. It was the time cinema really finding its footing and pretty much nothing was too far. Nudity became the norm within media, as did violence and as much cursing as humanely possible. Cinema thrived on the idea of being as edgy as it could, and this produced a bunch of insane films throughout the decade. Ultimately, I'd say the 70s was the decade of the shock value. A bit of an immature phase, so to speak.

The Devils is a film that tells the true story Urbain Grandier of the 17th century. A priest that got a bit too caught up in the political sphere and was accused of witchcraft following a series of alleged possessions that took place in Loudun. With the arrival of Grandier in Loudun, we immediately see a corrupt group of nuns that are lusting over him, already in deep thought of sin. The film continues with this theme of nuns failing to maintain their devotion to the church and in constant sin. Lusting over Grandier as if he's some irresistible force. Grandier is accused of being responsible for much of these alleged possessions and thus accused of witchcraft. There's much more to it, but that's the general gist of it. Though surrounding this theme is the blatant connection between state and church, and the corruption that is blatantly evident within the two with their allied nature, alongside the ways in which both are quick to lie and accuse others of corruption and sin to hide their ways.

This is where the film is quite interesting, it really is about that desperation of the corrupt to use others as scapegoats, to wash off their own sins with the lies of sinful others. Rather than to accept their own sins and failures. Something primarily evident even today in governments. To no surprise, this film was banned in many nations and remained incredibly controversial for its themes displaying sinful nuns, affairs, and politics.

![The.Devils.1971.REPACK.1080p.35mm.4K.Scan.AVC.FLAC.2.0-BoBo-0001.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23tGRUM6c1oMXASYYn8wf7ww6waGtu8WhF5sPxtL9EAytgSgipE95fNWQa1rDZ49DCgfM.png)

Within all of this is a deeply beautiful film though, visually artistic and filmed in a very dreamy way. Shot on 35mm film, the colours are both dark and rich. Strong whites, dark shadows, and vibrant reds. The cinematography takes things to another level with its perception of the Holy. It still considers these places and themes to be fragile, but doesn't shy away from the main thing it's trying to say. That even the most beautiful and gentle spaces can be tainted. It's hard to say whether I liked the film or not. On one hand it's certainly clear as to why it is controversial. It's evident as to why so many critics disliked it upon release. But it's a very raw film, and one that says what it intends to in a beautifully shot manner. The horror side of it is much psychological, rather than visual.

I think people discovering the film suddenly is a good thing though. The people that originally saw and reviewed it back in 1971 certainly had a different perspective on things, much like we do now. The tolerance (ironically a theme of the film) for such controversial subjects has shifted in recent years. We're much more familiar with the dystopian, self-destructive, and heavily desensitised via social media and the Internet. Perhaps The Devils finally found its real understanding audience almost 60 years later.

Taking pictures with my phone is generally something I avoid doing. Usually I do have a camera by my side and that allows for a bit more creative freedom when the moment comes to take something. But there are times where I'm not thinking that creatively, it's just not part of the intent. There may be a moment that just looks kinda nice or stands out to me, or perhaps just in that second I want to capture the surroundings. Whether it's nice light, a particular environment, or just a spontaneous decision while walking around. During summer I didn't really take anything. I wasn't really feeling it, so I didn't have the camera around for the most part. The few times I did get out, I was trying to stumble across new things. The above image I just took in a building stairway while watching an insanely strong storm, managing to capture the lightning striking nearby.

![1000063876.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/Eq3651pcuhMx2rWM1A2UFWki2nWavpUTgoVvAewMNXCeNPGrTiufWXDtux5wHkv3moQ.jpg)

Moving into a new area, I saw a nearby park that had this beautiful design to it. It's still a park I haven't explored much. A place I intend to enjoy a bit more as the weather shifts. While there is a bit of greenery around the area in the image, during the height of summer it takes quite a bit of walking under the intense sun to actually reach. Not the most comfortable location to get to! I'm thinking of some fun ways to recapture this area though, perhaps with some vintage lenses on a full frame camera. Maybe some fun swirly bokeh with the Soviet glass I have that produces some fun character. I think there's opportunity here for fun portraits with the correct lighting for the highlights.

![1000061953.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23wMRzY9nfWHTgt4qskVbD2XH4cUB1KwHPaZtqvU2NraLeY7HUpYxjWfhqEBo7nw5WmUY.jpg)

Sometimes it's the softness of light that captures my attention. Sometimes I don't always have the gear to capture it in that moment. Needing a wider focal length that I just don't have, so I opt for capturing it anyway with the phone. I liked how soft this daylight was. I could imagine on a very wide lens and a mist filter it'd come out beautiful. Light is something I typically pay strong attention to, I love the way it rolls off, how highlights provide depth, or how light interacts with the shapes around. I would easily waste endless rolls of film shooting night lighting, and it's something I've tried to minimise over the years due to those increased costs of film stock and developing itself.

![1000063877.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/Eo6JPESbqD9sVZwtbuYX4ixcsxKLb4MKYhiuiGip1Jh5gW1V43b21d3XViSPPrVfzCJ.jpg)

Lastly, this is a former cascade in a botanical garden I aim to properly capture again. I didn't have the camera with me at the time. But I liked the old feeling of the area. It had that empty Soviet feeling to it where history remained out in the open, though somehow completely forgotten in time.

While I'd much rather be sharing photography, I don't actually have any photographs to share at the moment. Instead, I felt like writing about a low budget indie film made by a bunch of zoomers that suddenly sprung up into the public eye recently. The film was picked up by Neon after a few festival screenings, which led to widespread acclaim and visibility. Indie films that have big success stories are few and far between these days, especially ones that came from really young filmmakers that just decided to make something. I read that the creator of the film was even tempted to just upload the film to YouTube shortly before the call from Neon came in. Anyway, this was largely perceived as a horror film for its themes, and to some degree it is one.

It Ends is about a road that, well, seemingly never ends. A group of students moving from one place to another find themselves stuck on a road in the woodland just endlessly driving. Whenever they stop, groups of frantic people begin to chase them, screaming and begging for help. Thus, the group decides the best course of action is to simply keep moving. They soon realise they no longer feel hunger nor tiredness. The road continues on and on. Sometimes with hints of others having made it as far as them. Eventually they attempt to make an understanding of the road. Trying to figure out what it means or what's happening to them. Is it a spiritual thing? Is it a punishment of sorts?

![It.Ends.2025.1080p.LBXD.WEB-DL.AAC2.0.H.264-Kitsune-0001.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23wMPqfYc8ax82TZRYQxY84bKTA8r1MYp73BPdgq3rCA3taBEbStx51ajFyGRKv3gGqZV.png)

This thematically springs up a big question to us as the audience: what actually is happening to them? Are they being tested? Did they die at some point? One by one the group disbands as they reach their limit of endless driving, accepting their fate as the others move on. It brings the question of character into play. Are they each yearning for something? Is there something they fear in life? Is this a metaphorical narrative on the uncertainties of what awaits ahead in life for the lost youth? Particularly in such dire times where nothing makes sense, where nothing truly holds any promise or security. All that can be done is to step ahead and move forward and see what happens, what challenges await, and how to address them. It's a really well made film in that regard, you'd think over an hour of people driving and talking in a car might grow stale, but the pacing here is incredible. It goes by without feeling like it's overstaying its welcome, without it feeling like you're in that car with them longing for an end.
This was one of the most creative and engaging films I've seen in a long, long time. It really surprised me in its visual quality and narrative. Sometimes the writing felt a bit off, but hey, this was written by a student that had never made a feature before. And the fact that it got made and exists is a great accomplishment. Writing and dialogue behind, it's visually impressive. Shot on anamorphic lenses and giving a great sense of tightness to the world the characters are trapped within. I highly recommend checking this out.

This is kinda a first impressions post but I also won't bother writing a final review on it as I feel I'll write about everything I want to here anyway. But, Crystal Lake has been a great surprise. I watched through all of Carrie yesterday and immediately jumped into this today, though I wasn't expected much of it as I've just never really been a fan of slashers or the whole Jason Voorhees character and franchise. Though to much of my surprise, instead of this being about a young Jason, it's more about his insane mother that is on the run with her son, of which is presumed dead in the forest. The show mostly following Pamela (the mother) as she refuses to believe Jason is dead while also trying to protect their name from a group of people trying to find them.

The insanity mostly coming from Pamela, who is played by the live action Scooby Doo's Velma (Linda Cardellini). It's great to see her acting in something like this, quite a difference from anything else I've seen her in. And she really works this character of a mother that's traumatised from loss, hiding things, and also has quite a dark past (and present) herself. Watching her snap and go all-out on people throughout the season is an absolute blast. As her patience runs out, as people push and push around her, the show mostly follows her growth into madness and it's really engaging. Especially once the violence really kicks in. Though what I have enjoyed is that the show isn't all gore and violence, a lot of it spans across the town itself and how other characters are connected to Pamela's life in one way or another.

![crystal.lake.s01e03.1080p.web.h264-cakes[EZTVx.to]-0002.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/namiks/23tS32PNhzJdjtHXH6xpo2ezGXBHEwbjRbqnRFtGRK1F6z86KYUR9od6SQTXtXhJFqLfT.png)

This pacing has really made it a bit more appealing to me given I mentioned I'm not all that interested in the slasher genre within horror and thrillers. And not all of the action in it is exactly slashing. There's a sense of mystery to the narrative as strange happenings occur around the camp of Crystal Lake, conspiracy theories of a bear lurking the woods and hunting tourists, pieces of flesh being found as police struggle to literally connect the pieces with little bits of evidence appearing that a bear might not exactly be the culprit after all. Of course this all connects to the disappearance of Jason after all, we know that, we see it, but for the characters such a possibility of a poor disabled child that drowned in a lake couldn't possibly be linked to a potential survival. Nor could he be the culprit instead. The town is full of 'lovable idiots' as I'd call them. Oblivious folk. People with their own secrets and agendas. But not necessarily out for harm.

I've quite liked that the show has hardly even touched on the character of Jason so far. Things are certainly linked to him, but the show is pacing things out enough to show the broader narrative of who the family is and how reserved they are. There's a sense of humanity there that gives us a reason to care for Pamela and Jason rather than seeing them directly as the monsters here, more the rest of society in how they treated Jason as a child with his disabilities, and how others assume they have all things figured out while pushing others around. I'm curious as to where this is all heading, but for now it's pretty engaging. Especially with the way the show is shot. It clearly had quite a high budget to it, and it's nice to see a franchise try something a bit different again. I've never really cared for the films, but this I'd say I could recommend to others that may be like me and are searching for something fun this October leading to Halloween.

Leading up to Halloween I figured I'd jump into some fun television series, one of which has been the recent Carrie television series. I remember the 70s film and liking it, so I was interested in seeing how a modern approach to the story would unfold as a series, especially given it has more time to be fleshed out and do more with the characters. I'm about five episodes in now and I'm genuinely really enjoying it. Though with equal measure finding myself with such frustration over the treatment of Carrie throughout her attempts to learn of life beyond what her mother has displayed to her. The Carrie story is something that really shows the evil of people, but it's something that's heavily exaggerated in this series which actually has you understanding the mother's perspective for the most part.

Sheltering her daughter from the degeneracy and chaos of the modern world by not giving her access to the Internet, to phones, to television. Instead educating her with certain books and music. For Carrie the sudden freedom is fascinating, and that discovery of some of the world's good changes only makes you feel more for her as we see the innocence of her mind and excitement for life get matched with the constantly disappointment and cruelty at the hands of others. Primarily at school from other students, and especially from the character of Chris who is an insufferably, downright evil brat. The telekinesis side of Carrie is constantly weaved in through the episodes as we see her instability and nervousness leading to the manipulation of objects nearby. First a few shakes, then the movement of objects. Over time she starts to become aware.

Something I've been loving through the episodes is that build up of her powers. While you constantly feel for her, you just know that those wronging her will eventually get their punishment. That eventually there will be some satisfaction. This is something we even see from Carrie's mother, as she connects to the modern world herself. Finding people insufferable, hating that she's subjected to a work life that is exploitative and shows the worst of humanity. But also seeing that she is also a very vengeful person herself. I'd say the pacing over these episodes has been really good, it pulls you in quite quickly even if it feels little is happening. It's constantly jumping between characters to build itself forward. To show the world beyond Carrie and its workings, each of which slowly leading to her discovery of her strength and thus even more emotional instability.

From a production side of things it's definitely well made. I had my doubts to begin with when I first saw it was made into a television show, but it has clearly been well thought out and it's nice to see the story being spread out a bit more, especially coming from the 70s film. Instead here, we see more of that chaos of the modern world because of the technological and cultural side too. Where phones, the Internet and social media have also played a stronger part in exacerbating Carrie's introduction to the real world. If you're looking for a show to watch over the Halloween month, I definitely recommend this!

It seems like the world has only grown more chaotic. Before summer I was often saying I was embracing the chaos, constantly throwing myself into it in attempt to photograph interesting things and capturing unique moments. I think at this point I'm a bit done with the chaos though. As the world grows more and more chaotic, I feel the excitement for a sense of peace and silence. To run from the moments that feel like noise and instead take in the beauty of the natural world. Where arguably there's equal chaos when you really look into it. But yeah, I feel like I'm wanting to slow down a bit, enjoy the seasons and spend time away from the cities.

These images are from different rallies, some are shot on 35mm film, some were shot digitally. One features a Prime Minister, and the rest feature the regular people that rally together to pursue an agenda. I never shared these on Hive before, perhaps images still from those days, but not these images. I'm not sure why. I think they still have some fun to them, but perhaps I prioritised the ones that felt a bit more deeper in narrative. Looking back at them, they feel a bit like a dream. Where somehow I floated through the crowds like a ghost just observing. Where I can't even imagine how I felt in those moments. Where was I, aside from behind the camera? In this state of roaming as I searched for the emotions and connections of others. I suppose that's the fun of being a photographer sometimes. The search for something even if you in that moment are void of whatever the group is feeling or displaying. Only later, as you look back, do you search for those emotions too.

It was a fun time for sure, but like I said, I really feel the need to slow down and get into the natural world a bit more. I have always joked that I think in my older years I'll become a typical boomer photographer that runs around photographing birds all day. Sounds rather peaceful after all, doesn't it? Fresh air, beautiful views, and connecting with the real world. Maybe after a bit of a break from the chaos, I might want to jump back into it all again; but for now, that energy is long gone.

As the weather changes I feel more at peace, more content. More relaxed and also more motivated. I want to be outside more and feeling that fresh, cooler air. This has also made me want to photograph things more like I used to. I'm no longer battling the heat and panic attacks that kept me indoors; those are something I haven't really mentioned in my posts as I didn't really want to talk about it. It kept me quite idle though, and I was really loving shooting film at the time (I'm always that way, actually. I always want to shoot film). But as the weather changes and my film supply dwindles, I'm halfway between wanting to shoot film and switching to digital a bit more. Mostly because the lower light makes film photography a bit harder. 200 ASA just doesn't quite cut it.

There's also the mist filer that I've missed on the digital camera. Film can replicate it a bit, so that makes switching back to digital a bit more fun. I'm also waiting impatiently for an online store here to lower their prices of the Sony A7 V to buy that and FINALLY upgrade the digital. This is something I've really excited about, but I'm being a bit smarter with finances these days and not just throwing cash at expensive things. Focusing more on growth and stability rather than urges. We're in a pretty rough time economically and that's for sure. Nothing is that easy at the moment so if you have savings, it's best to cling to them and allow them to grow into something more. Fortunately I do have plenty of cameras. I shouldn't be getting too obsessive over the more modern technicalities of the Sony A7 V. My trusty Canon AE-1 works just fine, after all.

These were taken on the Sony A6000 though. With the mist filter and at the crop sensor focal length of 35mm. It's always weird going back to it after shooting film given film is that full 35mm frame. My love for the 28mm lens I have for the Canon being stronger than ever. And that 35mm focal length on crop sensor feeling more restrictive. But I'm trying not to think of restrictions for now. Instead, just having fun and getting back into living as the weather changes. As that season brings things anew. I'd love to remain shooting film, but I'll need to stock up on some overpriced slow speed film stocks at 400 ASA and above. Until then, back to digital!

I think this was one of my most productive rolls of film. Not everything was portfolio worthy, but I got some really fun shots of various parts of Yerevan and Tbilisi during summer and the early transition into autumn. With the changing weather that became a bit more stormy as the heat mixed with the cooler evenings, to the old decaying buildings of the Old Tbilisi district. It was a really fun roll of film due to that. Usually I'll have a half roll that I just don't really care for. I won't even bother exporting them into anything, just leaving them as their tiff format. No editing. No sharing, just left in the file. Sometimes it's due to exposure mistakes or just poor compositions.

This one I took mostly for fun, it shows the diversity of Armenian culture. Some kids waving around a random Armenian flag with all their patriotic might. A large bunch of wool drying out in the sun to be turned into yarn for the old women to use to knit something going into the colder months. And of course, the classic Soviet/Armenian carpet laying out above the garages to dry after being cleaned. I found the composition itself nothing special, but the context itself says a lot of the varying types of people and styles that are found within Yerevan and Armenia. It's always an interesting sight for me. Where the culture remains quite evident once you step out of the more busy parts of Yerevan.

I forgot I had this image for the post yesterday, where I mentioned the decaying buildings of Old Tbilisi. The cracks forming in the facades of old buildings, but their charm still remaining. I had no idea this image would flare like it did. Shot on the 28mm, I took it mostly for fun. To get back into photography after such a hiatus from it. To warm up, so to speak. But here you see the cracked texture of the building, with many around it in far worse condition. Some of which are being fixed over time, others I'm not sure they'll make it long enough to finally be noticed.

This last one I wanted to do something more fun with, but I think the potential lacked a bit, I loved the look of the older buildings, the old balconies and the light that was hitting through going into sunset. But I think it came out a bit rough in the end. Probably from the settings I dialed in. Perhaps even just from me assuming a certain area of the image would in fact be the main appeal, leading to something generally less interesting. Though that happens, especially with film where you can't see how the final result will actually turn out. You just sort of guess and figure things out from there. And that's of course also the fun of it!

This picture definitely didn't turn out as I had expected. Slightly underexposed on the film stock but still came out with some nice tones. It didn't seem as tight as it was in person even though I shot it through the 28mm lens. Though I think it has a unique charm to it anyway. I wouldn't call it a bad image, just not exactly as I'd have liked. But this was taken inside an incredibly old home. It was well over one hundred years old at this point but still had its pre Soviet aesthetic. Where it once belonged to a very rich family. Old candlesticks which would've lit the entrance before widespread electricity in the area. A beautiful old marble styled staircase with its original wood still present.

Moving on this was one of the final photographs I took from the old apartment. A nice sunset that didn't quite turn out as vibrant as I'd have liked. But whatever, it was more for the memory of having lived there even if I was excited to leave it and move into a much nicer place! The mountain view in the distance was always fun. And the old Soviet factory spaces that remained on the space were often interesting to look at and think of how things once would've been. The new apartment buildings were placed over the original factory space. Built as far back as the 1950s. Smoke stacks still present. Nuclear bunkers around. Original Soviet era posters. All getting torn down for more buildings. It was sad to see, and so moving felt healthy.

Elsewhere, back in Tbilisi were older staircases. I thought this one would turn out a bit differently but I hadn't used this film stock in a while. Low aperture, low shutter speed. All just figuring out settings and having fun with film for the fun of film. Nothing too serious. Again more for the memories of the place. Who knows whether these places will be around in another ten years. Maybe they'll finally fall to the test of time. Many of these buildings had rough exteriors. Walls with huge cracks. Sloped windows and entrances, and even stairs. Probably not the safest places to enter or be near, and definitely not for long-term living!

And lastly another interior, this one an old building like the previous ones but turned into a cosy cafe. Still with its original interior design, but slightly altered to suit modern cafe standards. It was a nice place, with a stray dog that would lay indoors by the entrance, and a cat that would roam. It's fun writing about these spaces, the memories, the little details. Hopefully I'll have another roll of film soon to write about. This one, again, the Kodak Vision2 250D cine film!
