It’s fall, and somehow this time of year manages to touch me deeply once again. And even though October is usually still sunny and bright—and summer hasn’t been gone all that long—I can already feel my melancholic side stirring. And it’s probably that side that gives us the courage to speak words that wouldn’t otherwise come so easily to our lips. But words that actually do us a world of good and can comfort and warm us, especially during these weeks and months.

And that’s why I’d like to let my poetic side have its say today as well. As before, it doesn’t take long for it to express itself. Just a few lines—then everything is said and written. But just long enough to fill a short poem that beautifully captures the mood around me...

***The colors, vibrant and soothing***

***Yet already late and almost too heavy***

***My gaze captivated by all this magic***

***It is autumn who paints the most beautiful picture of all***

As you see, it really doesn’t take many words. Just give it a try...

DEUTSCH

Not long ago, we took a trip to a park where I discovered some amazing trees. Fall had just begun to bring out its colors, and the first leaves were already starting to turn a bit more colorful.

In addition to the leaves glowing in the setting sun, many small, round, red fruits were hanging from the tree, which looked a bit like rose hips. But since it obviously wasn’t a rose hip bush, I became curious and was determined to find out its name—which a small sign promptly revealed to me.

In Japanese, the tree is called “Hanamizuki,” and in English , “American flowering dogwood.” Yet another great name that immediately reminds me of the “Asian flowering dogwood,” which I introduced a few days ago. Both belong to the same plant family and apparently both produce what are known as “high blooms” during the summer.

DEUTSCH

But summer is over, and instead we now we have these little red fruits that give the tree a very special touch. And just in time for the occasion, a little bumblebee even struck a pose and sat still for my camera.

Wonderful—that makes the photographer even happier and gives him something to talk about and write about afterward. And I learned something new, too, which I can show off a little somewhere else at some point down the road.

For today, I’m just happy about my discovery and the fact that we’re having such beautiful weather right now. It makes me want to run back outside right away...

👹🍣🎎

A while ago I tried to explain the use of the English transition word "otherwise", which hopefully did the trick. I left you guys with a little exercise which hopefully was not more than a piece of cake for all of you. But to make sure I have brought you the answers today so you can check whether you got it all right.

Here are the five sentence again, in which blanks you should write one of the following words : [ otherwise / unless / so / or ]

Hurry up, ________ you will be late for the school bus!

You must study hard for the test; ________, you won't get a good score.

It started to rain heavily, ________ our baseball practice was canceled.

We cannot enter the science lab ________ the teacher is inside.

Set your alarm clock tonight; ________, you might oversleep tomorrow morning.

And here comes the answer key and some brief explanations:

or (Hurry up, or you will be late...)
Use "or"; in short imperatves/commands: "Do this, or that will happen."

otherwise (You must study hard; otherwise, you won't get a good score.)
Connects two independent thoughts with a semicolon or period: "Do A; otherwise, bad
result B.";

so (It started to rain, so practice was canceled.)
Shows a direct cause and effect.

unless (We cannot enter unless the teacher is inside.)
Means "if ... not"

otherwise (Set your alarm; otherwise, you might oversleep.)
Shows what will happen if you don't set the alarm.

Not sure why? Have a look at yesterdays post again. Then you should be all set for the next time!

A few days ago I was asked how to use the words otherwise, and I noticed that I hardly ever use it myself. So I was thinking about a quick and easy way to explain it and to compare it with similar transition words. And with the help of the AI of my choice I came up with the following:

Otherwise — Used to explain what will happen if you don't do something.

Or / Or else — Similar to otherwise, used in simple instructions.

If ... not / Unless — Used to set a condition.

So — Used to state a result.

So how about a little exercise?

Choose the best word from the box: [ otherwise / unless / so / or ] and fill in the blanks!

Well, how are you doing? I will give you a little time to think and come up with the answer tomorrow. I am sure you will have it all right!

In the world of plants, you sometimes come across the most amazing names and find yourself wondering who might have inspired them. Usually, though, you encounter the plant first, and the name comes later.

That’s exactly what happened to me just a few days ago, when I came across some bright red fruits in a park near our home, hanging from a tree that was still quite green. Fall is just really getting started now, so many leaves are still green—though that should change very quickly soon.

But back to this tree here, which, as I said, had these red fruits growing on it. At first, they looked a bit like cherries, but that impression quickly changed upon closer inspection.

During further research, I came across the English name, which sounds impressive. “Asian flowering dogwood”—you’d have to think of that first!

I then tried to figure out the meaning of the name, which isn’t that hard these days.

The name “Asian flowering dogwood” describes both its origin and its striking appearance. “Asian” simply indicates that the tree is native to (East) Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan.

“Flowering” refers to its magnificent white bracts, which it produces in the summer and which look like large flowers. In fact, the actual flowers are tiny and sit in the center of these bracts.

The second part of the name, “dogwood,” refers to the plant genus to which the tree belongs. The name is traditionally associated with the hard wood of these plants.

As you can see, it’s actually quite simple. You just have to ask, and you’ll get an answer 😅

DEUTSCH

"Asiatischer Blüten-Hartriegel" - darauf muss man erst einmal kommen!

Actually, September is the harvest time. That’s when here in Japan, lots of small harvesters rattle across the fields, cutting the rice plants that were planted in early May. Normally, the harvest lasts until the end of September, and then the fields lie fallow for a few months before the cycle starts all over again the following year.

But even though it’s already October, I keep coming across fields these days where the harvest is far from over. Apparently, people here take things a bit more slowly and prefer to wait a little longer.

Well, that’s just fine by me. Because, to be honest, we much prefer the rice fields this way. As long as the golden-yellow ears of rice sway in the wind across the fields, the landscape around us looks truly wonderful. Somehow, it almost feels like summer is still here, especially when the weather cooperates.

Because after the harvest, not much of that magic remains—just a few brown stalks with a bit of green still growing from them. Before a completely different season, with completely different weather, offers a completely different view. But I’d rather not think about that today; I’m just enjoying the last bit of golden magic we still have left...

DEUTSCH

For me, October has consistently been a time of (new) beginnings in recent years, with many of the same rituals repeating themselves. But that doesn’t mean I’ve completely gotten used to it or become as seasoned as an old hand. Quite the opposite—I find myself getting nervous all over again and wondering what’s in store for me this time around.

Well, now that the first couple of weeks are behind me, I can at least say that it hasn’t been that bad so far. Even though it was extremely stressful, especially at the beginning, I seem to have already established something of a light routine that I hope I can draw on in the coming weeks and months. The last three months aren’t just the end of the fiscal year—they’re also another highlight in my work year, which has been extremely mixed so far this time around. Although right now, I’m not really sure which I’d prefer.

But anyway, let’s just try to make the best of it. Like I said, we’ve made a start, and hopefully we can build on that. And if the weekends keep turning out as good as the last one, there’s really no reason to complain. Even if the bruises and scratches will probably take a while to heal. But they’re also kind of proof that we did it right. Hey… I didn’t say perfect!

Let’s see how the new week gets off to a start. Of course, Monday isn’t a day to celebrate for me either, but it’s been a very long time since I used to curse that day. No weekend without the start of the week, and UNFORTUNATELY, it doesn’t take that long for a week like this to be over. Actually, it goes by way, way too fast, but I’ve probably mentioned that a few times already.

Right now, I’m just hoping I can establish a new sleep routine, since my daily schedule has shifted significantly earlier and I now have to get up too early much more often. But there’s nothing I can do about that right now—all I can do is get used to it and maybe skip the computer in the evenings after all. And as hard as it is, I should start doing that as soon as possible, so I’m going to make a start today, on the first day of the week.

So…see you tomorrow! 👻

Lots of questions has been coming up my mind recently and I am not so sure how to answer them. Life has been going in circles and ups and downs and this year has been quite a strange roller coaster for me.

I guess the last years I have been doing alright, but I also feel stuck here at this side of the world. I got myself too comfortable to forget what I had been looking for all the years before. There is still some longing inside myself, which hasn't been met and which is constantly growing. Right now I am not able to completely decipher the code and read and understand it clearly, but maybe soon it will be time again to get out of here and to start looking again for the place I really belong too. I actually have been planning on going back where I come from, I have several good reasons which support this plan but on the other hand I am sure, this is not what I really want.

I need to listen deep inside myself and figure out where and what I will be next. Life gives us many chances to invent ourselves again and again, and we shouldn't waste those great opportunities to give something new a try and see where it may take us.

Right now I am good where I am, it's a steady and rather safe place which provides for many of my needs. I am in no hurry to fly out again, but the world is in motion and so I am. Who knows, maybe I can find here some new inspirations. So far the ride here was mostly entertaining and already helped me to broaden my horizon.
What else is possible?

Now that fall has arrived and is in full swing everywhere, you can once again see these round, spiky fruits all over the place. Chestnuts come in all sorts of varieties, some more spiky than others.

Here in Japan, too, it’s now クリ (Kuri) season—as the Castanea crenata, the Japanese chestnut, is called in these parts. The fruits are covered with extremely sharp spikes and shouldn’t really be picked up with bare hands. Inside are two or three small brown chestnuts, which are often used in cooking here—for example, in chestnut rice, an interesting addition to the Japanese cuisine.

I have to admit that it took a while until I really started noticing the クリ. Maybe seeing them from a different perspective helped, but the little ones had a lot of fun having Dad crack open some of the fruits for them. After that they were proudly showing off their great catch and wouldn’t let go. Later, we found those little round objects scattered or hidden all over the car—which was also a nice reminder of our little outing.

Let’s see if we can find a few more クリ this weekend to finally complete our collection. And there’s definitely still enough room in the car—I’m absolutely sure of that.

DEUTSCH

A few days ago, I showed you the first pictures of our radish fields, which are now turning green. Okay, I’ll admit I exaggerated a bit when I called them “fields”—they’re actually just two small plant pots where we sowed some radish seeds. But still, it is growing there now, and faster than I expected.

Of course, we still have a long way to go before we can harvest anything here. Still, it’s nice to see that things are moving along and that we might be on the right track. I rarely see radishes in supermarkets here in Japan, so I was all the more surprised when I recently discovered several different varieties of radish seeds at a small market. Well, we didn’t need to be told twice—we just went ahead and bought some.

As I mentioned last time, it shouldn’t take that long before we have something to pick here. Supposedly, we only have to wait about a month, and we should be able to manage that. Now let’s see how things go in our pots, because I want to keep you all updated on our progress here. And of course, I’m also looking forward to some delicious radishes—that would be the best reward of all...

DEUTSCH
