Remember the portrait with the slicked-down hairstyle that almost looked like a haircut? I decided to draw another version, but this time, I faced her a bit forward.

I like how this hairstyle keeps things simple. Without long braids, flowing curls, or a big afro taking up space, the attention goes straight to her face.

It's interesting how drawing the same hairstyle from a different angle can make it feel like a completely different exercise.

Two portraits, the same hairstyle, but a different view. Which version do you prefer? The angled portrait or this straight-on one? For me, I like the angled one more..

Hello everyone! I hope you are having an excellent day. Today I want to share with you a very special digital illustration I made last year as a birthday gift for someone who was very important in my life at that time: a fanart featuring Erika Furude and Zesshi Zetsumei.

To be completely honest, this drawing took me quite a lot of effort and dedication. I had spent a long time without drawing regularly, and getting back into the rhythm of digital art was quite challenging. In fact, it took me longer than expected, and I ended up finishing it even after her birthday had passed because I got heavily stuck during the rendering phase. Despite the hurdles and creative blocks, putting thought and care into bringing these two fascinating characters together—whom she really loved—made it a project I poured a lot of heart into, and looking back, it helped me push through my artistic limits.

¡Hola a todos! Espero que estén teniendo un excelente día. Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una ilustración digital muy especial que hice el año pasado como regalo de cumpleaños para una persona que fue muy importante en mi vida en ese momento: un fanart de Erika Furude y Zesshi Zetsumei.

Para ser completamente sincero, este dibujo me costó bastante trabajo y dedicación. Llevaba bastante tiempo sin dibujar de forma constante, y retomar el ritmo y la confianza con el arte digital fue un verdadero reto. De hecho, me tardé más de lo debido, tanto que incluso pasó su fecha de cumpleaños y aún no lo terminaba porque me quedé muy estancado durante la fase de color y detalles. A pesar de los tropiezos y los bloqueos, ponerle tanto empeño a estos dos personajes —que a ella le gustaban muchísimo— convirtió este proyecto en algo muy personal al que le invertí gran parte de mi esfuerzo, y viéndolo en retrospectiva, me ayudó a superar mis propios límites en ese momento.

Aquí les comparto un vistazo al paso a paso del proceso, desde el concepto inicial hasta los detalles finales:

This is a portrait of a girl wrapped in a huge scarf that covers her head and drapes over her shoulders.

I wanted the scarf to be a big part of the drawing, so I paid attention to how it wrapped around her head and fell over her shoulders. With so much fabric in one place, the folds and other sections were important. I didn't want it to look like a flat piece of cloth sitting on top of her head and shoulder.

I usually enjoy drawing different hairstyles, but this was a nice change. Working with fabric and seeing how a few folds can give a portrait a different look.

Musings Under The Almond Tree

The birds chirped in unison, leaves rustled through the field covered in soft carpets of grass, the winds blew through every space they found, and the clouds stood at a standstill, with a mood calling out for the rain. All of it brought immense peace to her weary soul, with the wish that love would seep through her bones one more time.

“Of what use is love to us anyway?” she’d ask herself quietly.

Her eyes searched through the corners of the park, as though she had lost something in the middle of a valley where everyone else held onto theirs. But it was all reflex, an action to further distract her mind from what was and probably what would be.

She wrapped her fingers around each other, finally feeling a glimmer of hope that they had stopped aching from losing her precious one. This experience wasn't a first, but a repetition of indescribable feeling of loss and pain that had nowhere to go.

When the thoughts came again, they came more fiercely.

“Of what use is love to us when we only live to lose it all?” But this time, she had an answer. Her voice finally found words, and no tear broke from the attempt at utterance.

“Love is love. Simply. Our lives are designed to be full of it, for ourselves, for others, and for the world itself. And just like death, losing one’s love can be one of the most destabilizing experiences, but that’s the point of it all. To have something whose presence brings you the greatest joys and whose absence equally shakes your mind. All of it is proof that your heart feels, and once in a while, you get to go over it again. But time comes, and you no longer wither from within because you, too, are a jar where love replenishes itself. It’s never truly gone from you as long as you keep it.”

These words, said aloud while sitting under the almond tree, were the safety net she ever needed. They felt like a shoulder being let down to accommodate a hand. And once again, it was proof that her jar had never truly run empty, there was still love within her to draw from whenever she needed it.

Portrait Drawing

When I first saw the hair in the reference image, I thought it was a low cut hair so I zoomed in and it looked like someone took a generous amount of gel and smoothed every strand into place. Her hair is slicked down so neatly and I wanted to capture that.

I focused more on her face and the way the hair sits close to her head. It's interesting how a hairstyle can change the overall look of a portrait without needing much length or volume. I love to draw hair that flows, hangs down, or takes up half the page, so this was a different look to work with and I enjoyed it.

I also like that this hairstyle allows the face take centre stage. There's no big afro or long braids competing for attention, just her features and a clean, slicked-down look.

Red Beads

I wanted to draw a girl with braids, and I already knew I wanted to add red beads to her hair because it makes a hairstyle stand out, especially when the colour contrasts with the hair.

I started by sketching her face and figuring out where I wanted the braids to fall. I didn't focus much on getting the braids to look like individual strands. I had to think about their direction, how they hung around her face, and how they came together to form the hairstyle.

Once I had the braids in place, I drew all her facial features, shaded some parts of her face, then I added the red beads. This was my favourite part because the colour gave the drawing a little something extra.

I really love the final outcome. What do you think?

Ocean Healer: The Beauty of the Sea

I’m wrapping up my day with a new piece of fan art for this Friday—this time, a blue-toned portrait of the lovely #OceanHealer. She features long hair and is surrounded by waves, created in a style similar to my previous works, though I like this one much more—perhaps because blue is my favorite color to draw with. Anyway, as always, I’ll show you the creation process now.

THREE CRAB SPIDERS AND THEIR PREY

Spiders from a few genera in the Thomisidae family are commonly called ground crab spiders. They are mostly brown and grey, but in many shades of those two colors, and are well camouflaged on the soil or bark. Not all known species have that dull mymetic coloration, but as far as I know, all the ground crab spiders in my area are brown or gray.
In today's post, I'll show you three species. Two from the genus Xysticus, and one from the genus Bassaniodes. I photographed each spider with an insect in its fangs.
Of the two genera I mentioned, Xysticus is the one with more species: about 300 worldwide. Quite unsurprisingly, most ground crab spiders in my area belong to that genus.
The genus Bassaniodes has only 39 species. The Bassaniodes spider in this post is the only Bassaniodes I ever photographed.
And now, before starting to upload the most interesting part of the post, which means the photographs, I will tell you the scientific name of all three species and a sentence or two about each of them. I will also write the appropriate name of the species on one photograph depicting that species.

Let's start with Xysticus cristatus. In the photographs I'm about to present you here today, this ground crab spider is posing with a bug from the Pentatomidae family, a shield bug, in other words. The bug in question is Aelia acuminata. Xysticus cristatus is commonly known as the common crab spider or the ground crab spider. With many very look-alike species around, identifying the right species is very confusing. Preparing this post gave me a fair amount of headache.
Xysticus cristatus is mainly found on low vegetation, on grass, for example, like in these shots, or on the ground, always in sunny, open spaces. It doesn't tolerate dark, shady environments, so you won't find it in the forest or dense maquis that surround the meadows.
Like most crab spiders (Thomisidae), it is an ambush ptredator which spends much time sitting still, with its forelegs spread wide.
Xysticus cristatus often takes prey much larger than itself.

Let's continue with Xysticus lanio, a spider that looks a lot like Xysticus cristatus but is generally considerably smaller, and can be found on shrubs and trees, often in the forests. In these photographs, Xysticus lanio is posing on the orchid that was growing near an oak sapling at the edge of the meadow. The prey in its fangs is a shield bug, but in this case, I wasn't able to identify the species.

And now, let's end with Bassaniodes robustus. This ground crab spider can be relatively easily set apart from the previous two. If you take a good look at the photographs and compare them, you'll see why. I mean, it just looks kinda different, don't you think? The difference is quite subtle, I agree, but still, if you concentrate, it is hard to miss.
In the photographs presented in this post, the spider has caught a solitary bee. Can't tell you what solitary bee exactly, what species we have here.
Bassaniodes robustus is a fairly new addition to the genus Bassaniodes. The species was first described in 1832 as Thomisus robustus. It was transferred to the genus Xysticus in 1875 and then to Bassaniodes in 2019. Will it stay there? Probably yes, I'd say, but considering the history, I'd also like to say: Who can know for sure? I most certainly can't.

Caturday | Cat Being Cats

It's caturday so I drew cats. One cat lying flat with its legs and paws spread out like it had just given up on life. You know those cats that find the most ridiculous position to lie in and somehow look perfectly comfortable? That was the energy I wanted for this drawing.

I added some red shading underneath the cat to give it a little more depth and make it stand out against the page. I liked the contrast between the simple drawing and the pop of colour beneath it.

On another page, I did cat studies and focused more on heads instead. Different faces, different angles, and little details that make each cat look like its own character. Some cats have rounder faces, while others have features that give them a completely different look.

I enjoyed having both pages to work on, one is a complete drawing while the other os just practice.

"I'm Your NEW Mommy..." (Inkwell Writing Prompt)

As the last of the sunset's rays kissed the sky good night, little Cynthia was about to do the same. She and her mother were finishing up their nightly bedtime routine: brushing their teeth, getting tucked into bed, and reading a whimsical bedtime story.

"I really enjoyed that one, Mama," Cynthia sang right as her mother closed the cover. "Do you think that Ben and Anna's parents know about all of their nighttime adventures?"

Her mother gave a light laugh while giving her pregnant belly a stroke. "Probably not. I don't know of too many mommies and daddies who let their 10-year-old children travel back in time to medieval Europe -- alone!" With that Cynthia's mother stood up, turned off the bedside lamp, and kissed her daughter on the head.

The last words that Cynthia heard were, "Good night, my love. Please, have sweet dreams..."

The words echoed inside her head until her eyes opened again, and Cynthia magically found herself standing in the foyer of their house. Unbeknownst to her, while her eyes had been closed, Cynthia had entered a dream. Of course, to her, it appeared to simply be another ordinary day at home.

Her dream would swiftly disprove that to her.

Cynthia took a few steps forward, walking through the archway to the living room. There, she found her father laying on the couch, eating popcorn while watching a comedy show on the TV. He appeared to be engrossed in the program; so much so that he paid no attention to his daughter continously calling out to him.

"Dad?..." Cynthia tried one final time to appeal to her father before finally stepping in front of him. With Cynthia now blocking the TV, her father fervently waved his head left and right, clearly irritated at having his show interrupted. Frankly, the irritation seemed very out of character for her father... "Um, have you seen Mom around?"

"She's upstairs, last that I saw," he briskly snapped back.

Slightly hurt by her father's irrational behavior, Cynthia left the living room, thereby finally leaving him in peace with his show. Right as she approached the grand staircase, however, Cynthia could already see her very pregnant mother, standing at the top of it. As Cynthia looked up at her and gazed upon her mother's soft smile, she began to feel a bit more at ease. Now, THIS feels familiar, she thought to herself.

Cynthia continued to watch as her tranquil mother began her descent down the staircase, slowly, almost painfully so... Until her mother lost her footing and started tumbling down the stairs.

Little Cynthia's breath hitched inside of her throat as she witnessed her pregnant mother's body contort into unnatural positions: with legs over her head, and arms whipped behind her back. All Cynthia could think about was the young life inside her mama's belly -- would they...?!

Cynthia rushed back into the living room, terrified for her mother's life. She entered the room where, despite the commotion from her mother falling down the stairs, her father continued to remain completely unperturbed with his bowl of popcorn in lap.

"Dad!" Cynthia screeched, tears of fear filling her eyes. "Mommy just fell down the stairs!!" She whipped her head back to see her mother, now laying face down on the floor, her big belly protruding from underneath her.

However, her father was now entirely absorbed in his show, eyes glazed over, the deadpan laugh track from the TV revebrating inside Cynthia's head...

Desperate and with no one to help, Cynthia ran back into the foyer -- only to discover that her mother was no longer laying on the floor... Rather, she was now standing up, appearing perfectly fine... aside from the terribly devilish grin upon her face...

"Mom?..." Cynthia apprehensively asked.

The only thing the woman said to her, with the same terrible expression, was, "I'm your NEW Mommy..."

Horrified, Cynthia ran back into the living room -- to her father, the man she was meant to turn to for comfort and safety -- but her father continued to lay in his same apathetic state. There was no one for Cynthia to turn to...

How could this have happened? How could her mother fall down the stairs, bruised and battered, and come out as "the woman" standing in front of her now?...

With that smile never leaving her face, the woman slowly approached the traumatized girl. "Don't worry; I'll take care of you now..."
