The first was malty and the second hoppy. Lets see how they faired shall we.

Trappistes Rochefort

Brewery: Abbaye de Saint Remy
Origin: Belgium
Style: Trappiste Belgian Beer
Abv: 9.2%
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown

Marketing: This beer was bought for me by a friend. The label is simple, with a tan color scheme contrasted with a rich brown, old style text. Not a lot of information about the beer but I think thats pretty common for a European beers? Its a simple label design but works for a beer brewed by monks.

Color: A rich brown color with a tan head of tiny bubbles. The beer was very hazy and definitely unfiltered.

Nose: It had a strong aroma of fresh bread and a predominant yeast aroma also. Brown sugar and caramel in the back ground.

Taste: The beer was sweet up front but not sickly, with not a lot of bitterness in the finish. I found it to have a pretty standard flavor profile for a Belgian beer. There was a distinct alcohol taste to the beer but was surprisingly mild considering the 9.2% abv. Bready notes and caramel and toffee were also present.

Texture: Mildly carbonated. Full bodied mouthfeel.

Here's a photo of my beer beside my friends gin drink.

Impression: This was a great beer with a lot of flavor and a big kick with the 9.2% abv. I could definitely feel it after one beer, though I probably haven't had a sip of alcohol in well over a month at this point. It was surprisingly fresh tasting considering that it was an import. It must be the high alcohol content thats keeping it from spoiling. I liked this beer a lot and it actually reminded me of my time in Europe. I would buy this one again.

Jutsu Pale Ale

Brewery: Bellwoods Brewing Co
Origin: Toronto ON Canada
Style: Pale Ale
Abv: 5.6
IBU: Unknown
SRM: Unknown

Marketing: The name is interesting and sounds Japanese to me though I can't say why. The color scheme is yellow, red and navy blue in a four pronged star pattern. No information on the back of the can really. The beer is marketed as a strong beer, which in Canada is anything over 5.0% abv I guess. 5.6% abv isn't that strong really, especially considering the 9.2% Belgium beer I just reviewed. But whatever. I like the design of the can overall. It has a retro sort of vibe to it that I dig.

Color: The beer poured a hazy bright yellow color reminiscent of fruit necatar. The head of foam was white and airy and dissipated rather quickly. A small ring of bubbles did last for while.

Nose: Fruity hoppy aroma with a strong smell of pineapple.

Taste: Mildly sweet but very tangy with a strong bitter finish that lingered on the tongue a little. The taste was very fruity with notes of pineapple and grapefruit. It almost tasted like a radler to me but less sweet and with more alcohol.

Texture: Heavily carbonated with strong angry bubbles. There was a velvety texture underneath that gave a weightiness to the mouthfeel. I'd say that it was medium bodied.

Impression: I like this one for a pale ale. It was fresh and crisp tasting. It was hoppy but I found it refreshing the day I drank it. I've bought it before and I'll buy it again.

They basically hit the point of needing to be thrown away, and then I give them another 3 to 6 months, maybe more, before I actually replace them.

Maybe I should just speak for myself here though. Maybe this isn't what most guys do and maybe I shouldn't lump all men into one basket like this. Maybe this is just a me thing?

So I had this pair of shoes at work that were getting a little more than ratty. It was to the point where I would periodically cut off any strands of frayed stitching and eventually I started even started to peel off the the outer layer of canvas that was developing holes. I share an office with two women, and I would make fun of myself for doing it. Then they would make jokes about me "cobbling" my shoes and we would all have a laugh over it.

This photo of them is actually at a pretty flattering angle. The other side is way worse with the canvas outer layer stripped off them. I was too embarrassed to even post what they truly look like, even to friends and strangers on Hive lol.

The day that that I finally decided I needed to purchase a new pair of shoes came when I was with a patient at the hospital. This person was living on the street at the time amd they were talking to me from their hospital bed, slumped over on the edge doing the old "fentanyl slump" and they said to me: "Dude your shoes are so bad. Do you want me to buy you new shoes?"

I basically ran to the store that same weekend to buy a new pair.

It was a struggle to find any anything that I liked at multiple stores and I just went ahead with an option that I considered the best of the worst that day. I went home with mixed feeling about them. Being unsure about a purchase is a sure way to feel buyers regret though and within 2-3 days of buying the shoes I absolutely hated them. They are "old man" shoes in my opinion. You can just picture something that your grandpa would wear and think are very stylish. I can't actually figure out why I bought them in the first place. I was desperate to just get something I guess.

I've stuck with the shoes for 3 months now and have recently started looking for a new pair that I actually like. I think I might be gun shy now though after my last experience because I've been to multiple stores again in different strip malls and then to the larger indoor mall twice over two weekends, and I still haven't found anything I want to buy.

I really don't like how shoes have such garish branding these days, like you need to know the type of shoe a person is wearing from across a field.

That being said I ended up liking, but being unsure about this pair of Adidas.

They kind of work for me but again, the branding is just so obvious and in your face that I ended up chickening out of buying them.

Once I got home I looked online at other Adidas shoe styles and found the same ones but in a more monochrome color scheme, with a toned down stripe branding.

I landed on two pairs that I'm thinking about and finally made a decision on Sunday on which to get and ordered them online.

Which do you think I went with or which do you prefer yourself? Let me know in the comments. I'll let you know which I bought once they come in.

Its a short science fiction novel with just under 200 pages. Its a quick read that I completed in a week.

The book is written in a serious kind of manner, in a logical and to the point sort of manner. It has dark scientific undertones and a psychedelic aspect and feel about it that you can see in the cover art imagery. Speaking of the cover art, I really love the 10th anniversary designs they came up with for this book and for the series as a whole. They combine and intermix flora and fona in a glitchy hallucinagenic fashion. I like it a lot and it really fits with the story overall.

You may also recognize the book from the movie with the same name that stars Natalie Portman. The book obviously had a lot of similarities to the movie but it was also quite a bit different, which was nice. Generally when reading a book after seeing the movie I find that I just replay the movie in my head. In this case that didn't really happen for me which made it mostly a new experience.

Brief Synopsis

A biologist and team of other scientists travel into "Area X," an expanding zone of natural landscape that is slowly transforming everything within its borders. From, there adventure and mystery ensues.

Themes of the story are control, paranoia, transformation, and others.

The book is a mystery and mostly remains a mystery throughout. Its not the type of story that does not provides answers, rather the type that raises more questions. There are multiple books in the series though, so maybe by the end all is revealed? I haven't read any of the other books yet but plan to at some point. I liked the story enough to see it through.

I gave this one a 4 out of 5 stars. Its probably not one that I would recommend to others though. I don't think that it would necessarily appeal to everyone. I enjoyed it though.

Have you read this book and/or series, or have you seen the movie. What did you think? Let me know in the comments.

Brief Synopsis

While on a business trip hours away from home, a middle aged man decides to go on a hike in the woods before meeting his clients for dinner at his hotel. He heads out into the woods and stumbles upon a supernatural pathway that he cannot get off of. While on the trail he faces a continuous series of obstacles and challenges that he must face and overcome if he should ever leave the pathway and return home to his wife and children.

One of the nice things about this book is that it get started with the action immediately, without any sort of delay or build up. I was surprised and excited by fact that things were already happening within the first few pages of the first chapter of the story. Its kind of nice when things start happening right away rather than taking multiple chapters to kick things off.

The book reminded me of a video game, a fairytale and an escape room all rolled into one wacky adventure. It was mostly light hearted with some really great and entertaining characters, but also with enough seriousness and philosophy to keep me interested.

The book is very fast paced, like I said, with each chapter bringing forward a new challenge and a new adventure for the protagonist. I will admit that at first I found this aspect of the novel to be a little boring in that everything felt inconsequential and almost repetitive in a way. After a short time it all started to feel like a repeating pattern, in which a obstacle or challenge would be presented and then the protagonist would simply over overcome it. At first that removed any sort of suspense for me and I had to push my self a little in the begining and just tell myself that this is just meant to be an entertaining "vibes" kind of story. But then maybe around the 40% mark I really started to get into it, when I realized that there is a sort of underlying existential philosophy being presented here. That for me made it more mysterious and brought back the suspense and I found myself really wanting to find out the meaning of it all. For me this part of the story gave me something to think about on a deeper level and is the part that stayed with me after I finished the book.

I will say that the philosophical aspect that I'm referring to was subtle. At no point did the book feel heavy to me, though there were some parts that were meant to be more emotional. If you don't like deeper meaning to your books than you could also easily just read this one for the adventure vibes and entertainment, and I think it would still be a satifying read if thats your jam.

I think that there is too much going on here to turn this one into a movie but I could definitely see this becoming a 4 to 5 episode miniseries.

I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars overall. It was a fast paced, fun, and with enough substance to keep me thinking about it for some time afterwards. I would recommend!!

What do you think, does this sound like an appealing book to you? Have you read any of Drew Magary's other books? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Another recent trip to the used book store proved very fruitful for me, as these trips usually do.

When there are books involved, I always manage to find something.

Here's a look at what I found on this little outing.

Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan

The biggest find were these three Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan. The original art hardcovers are quite rare and hard to come by and I'm still working on completing my collection.

These three brings me to 8 out of the 15 books in the series, so I still have quite a ways to go before I'm finished.

The earlier books are especially difficult to find. I have seen the later ones in the series quite a few times, the same books over and over, but never the first four books.

Online I have seen the entire hardcover set including the prequel "New Spring," being sold on Facebook Marketplace for $500 but its always too far for me to travel for them. That probably sounds like a lot of money but it actually works out to only about $33 per book which is ofgen times the price of a new Hardcover in Canada.

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris

Hannibal Rising by Thomas Harris goes with my newly acquired copy of The Silence of the Lambs. Its the first book in that series quartet and is the Hannibal / Dr. Lecter origin story. It the prequel to the Red Dragon. I actually forgot about this prequel and when I picked it up off the shelf that day I thought that it was the 4th book in the series, there one called just "Hannibal." I guess I missed the part that said "Rising" on the cover.

I thought that it was different cover art than what I'm used to seeing. Later in the day I did see the book "Hannibal" but I didn't bother to buy it because I thought that I already had it with "Hannibal Rising."

I don't know if you're able to follow this jumble of a story, but all this to say, I screwed up and missed an opportunity to buy another book.

Hannibal is pretty common to see in thrift stores and much less rare than some of the other ones, so I'm sure that I'll see it again at some point.

Timeline by Michael Crichton

The last book is one that was recommended to me by @bozz called Timeline by Michael Crichton. I started passively looking for it after he recommended it and I came across it in the store that day. I really like the cover art on this one and it was cheap to buy so I jumped on it, of course.

I'm actually reading it now and am about a quarter of the way through. So far I'm finding it interesting and am enjoying it. It was a good recommendation.

well, that's it for now. Do you have any book recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for stopping by and happy reading!

By the time I write a review on one book I about add another two to three to my backlog. All that to say, I'm quite behind in my reviews at the moment. Instead of doing them one at a time like I usually do, today I'm going to rapid fire six reviews and get them done. By the end of this I will almost be entirely caught up.

Lets begin. I'll start with most recently read to least recent. Here we go.

The Silence of the Lambs

I recently bought The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris and was excited to read it right away. Its a relatively short book of 338 pages of loosely packed sentences (not densely packed pages) and I completed it in just under a week. As I'm sure everybody knows by now, the book is a murder mystery that was made famous by the movie by the same name, starring Jody Foster and Anthony Hopkins. For that reason I won't bother describing the book synopsis.

To be honest, I thought that I would like the book more then I did but in the end I was actually slightly bored by it. I'm thinking that this was more because I already knew the story and the ending than anything else, but I also found it to be very simply written. I found it to be very accessible but kind of rudimentary in a way. Thay being said, I still gave it a 4 out of 5 stars so I guess, I did like it quite a bit in the end.

Memoirs of a Geisha

Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden is another classic story that is similar to The Silence of the Lambs in that it was made into a major motion picture. Its another one where the story is well known to me, having seen the movie several times. This one was very well written though and felt more complex to me than the former book. I gave it 5 out of 5 stars this time.

The movie follows the book pretty accurately and the movie is very good in my opinion, so if books aren't your thing then the movie is worth checking out if you haven't already seen it.

To Kill a Mockingbird

I've been reading a lot of classics these days as you can see.

I know that most people read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee as a child in highschool but my class watched the movie for some reason so I never read it until now. I can confirm that this is a great read as an adult though. There are a few minor parts in the story that I might remove to make it a little shorter, but all in all I liked it a lot and gave it 5 stars.

You probably know the story already so again, I won't bother with a synopsis. If by chance you haven't read it though and are interested in what its about I'll be happy to provide an update in the comments, just let me know.

The Tiger: a true story of vengence and survival

Who would have thought that a tiger could hold a vendetta? It seems like a very human behavior and not something common in the animal kingdom, right? Apparently tigers are very similar to humans in a lot of ways.

The Tiger by John Vaillant is a non-fiction true story about a Siberian Tiger that takes revenge on a poacher in the remote forests area of Northeast Asia, known as the Amur.

This story is like a nature version of the movie Taken with Liam Neesson, or maybe some other similar action film. The tiger has a set of skills that he will use to hunt down the man who wronged him.

Tiger: "I will find you and I will kill you."

The thing about this book is that its like most nonfiction in that the story that you think you're going to be reading about is actually only a small portion of the book, maybe 15-20%. This book gets into the history and practice of tiger poaching, tiger behavior and tiger lore. It also discusses some of the history of Russian and Siberia and more. Its all very interesting and you learn a lot about tigers, but the vengeance story is just a small part of the book. Its sort of trickled throughout it.

I gave this one 4 out of 5 stars. It was definitely interesting and I have a new respect for tigers, which are a highly intelligent and a very interesting species.

Blindsight

Cabbage Pie

I like cabbage rolls but I've never been good at making them. I've always struggled to roll them properly, so I typically do them a lazy way. I make them into a sort of cabbage casserole, layered like a lasagna. Its the same taste but a different presentation and typically much easier to construct.

After seeing a video online about a cabbage pie I thought that it might be fun to try myself. This was my first attempt at it and it turned out okay, so I thought that I'd share it with you all. I made some tweaks to the recipe. Here is my cabbage pie. Enjoy!

Ingredients

I didn't actually measure these ingredients when cooking so they are approximations. Use your judgement while putting things together if you try this recipe yourself. Feel free to add or subtract to your own taste preferences.

• 10-20 Cabbage leaves depending on your preference. If you want thicker cabbage layers then you will need more leaves.
• 1 pound ground beef (you can substitute ground pork or chicken as well, depending on your taste)
• 1 carrot
• 1 onion
• 1-2 garlic cloves
• 1 egg
• 2 tbsp tomato puree or paste
• worchestershire sauce to taste
• 1/4 cup bread crumbs (add as needed)
• tbsp olive oil

Spices

• Beef bouillon cube
• Onion powder
• Garlic powder
• Thyme

Directions

Saute the beef and dice the vegetables. Add the vegetables to the pan once the meat is mostly cooked through. Add the spices, worchestershire and tomatoes paste/puree as well. Cook until the vegetables are tender.

While everything is cooking, steam the cabbage leaves until soft. Don't go too far with the steaming because all of the color will drain from the leaves. I would recommend steaming one or two extra leaves and setting them aside as well. I'll explain why later.

When everything is done cooking mix in an egg and the bread crumbs to bind everything together. This makes it possible to cut the pie without everything falling apart on the plate.

Start assembling the pie by putting a few layers of cabbage into your casserole dish. In this case the bottom of the pan is going to be the top of the pie. I put one-two full leaves on the very bottom of the dish and then staggered the rest around the outside so that they could be folder over the filling. Add in the meat and vegetable mixture and fold the cabbage leaves over everything like I mentioned. Again, leave a few steamed leaves aside for the end.

Bake the pie in the oven at 350F for 30 minutes or so.

Take the pie out of the oven and flip it over and knock it out of the pan. As you can see from my photo, the cabbage leaves browned a lot in the oven. I would recommend putting one or two of the leaves that were set aside on top of the pie to give it a more fresh green look. I think that the presentation would be nicer that way. I plan to do this the next time I make the recipe.

Thats it. Enjoy!

Do you ever make cabbage rolls and have any special tricks for them? Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Until next time, thanks for stopping by.

As you may already know I collect a lot of vintage books. It started with one of my favorite childhood series, then a second, but it has since evolved pretty significantly since then. Nowadays I'm on the lookout for multiple vintage series as well as just more broadly looking for books that I've read or want to read specifically in hardcover. I'm particularly on the hunt for rare hardcover books by specific authors, like selective Stephen King novels just as one example.

Today I went to an antique market and gathered a decent haul. Lets take a look at what I found, starting with...

You guessed it, Goosebumps!

I actually saw quite a few of these books today but only one that I still need for my collection. Its actually becoming more and more difficult to find the ones I need. I only buy them if they are in good shape, especially the spine, which makes it difficult considering they are well over 20 years old now. This one is book number 54 out of 62 and is called "Don't go to sleep." It has some damage on the cover, which pisses me off, but the spine is nearly perfect so I couldn't pass on it. The books written later in the series are actually very rare and hard to find, so I may end up just buying damaged ones in the end just to complete the collection. I only need 6 more and I'll finally be done.

A new series that I only recently started hunting for are specific Dragonlance books. I read these as a kid as well and something recently triggered in my head that made me want to read them again. Dragonlance are fantasy novels that had a huge influence on the RPG Dungeons and Dragons. They also created and developed a lot of Dragon lore, so in a way they are pretty iconic and influential to the fantasy genre in general. Though there are dozens of books in the Dragonlance catalog, there are only three main sagas that I am hunting down myself, at this point.

They are the Chronicles, Legends, and Heros sagas. Today I found the complete Legends trilogy as well as two volumes out of three of the Heros books.

Next was more of a random find that I wasn't looking for but stumbled upon; Enders game and Children of the Mind. This is the first and last book in the Ender Quartet. I read them both years ago and they were super cheap despite being so rare in Hardcover.

It irks me a little that they are two different sizes but I couldn't pass up the deal of $6 for both. But now I will need to track down the other two books in the quartet, Speaker for the Dead and Xenocide.

The last book I found is the gem of the day. It a hardcover copy of Silence of the Lambs in nearly perfect condition.

I was shocked that it was only $20 CAD. A rare book like this I would have thought would be around $40-60. I jumped on it immediately without thinking twice.

I did see other books that I was thinking about buying, including two Hardcover Stephen King, Insomnia and Under the Dome. But by the end I felt like I had enough books to tie me over for a while. I don't like to have too many unread physical copy books because they can really pile up as you can see. Right now I have enough books in backlog to get me into 2027 at least.

I can't decide what to read next though. I'm thinking it will be one of the Dragonlance books or silence of the lambs. Which one do you think should I choose? Let me know in the comments.

She had many different hobbies and enjoyed making crafts.

She did a lot of cross stitch work and baking (as every grandma does). She also made these intricate paper pictures that came in a kit, and among other things, she did leather work and leather stamping.

I inherited her leather stamping kit many years ago and have made a few things myself over the years. The first piece and most elaborate one that I made was a woman's belt. I did that over 10 years ago and surprisingly, its still held up after so many years.

In the kit are dozens of different stamps that are used to create a wide variety of patterns.

You can create very simple patterns using single stamp or you can combine several to create some pretty intricate designs.

There are so many different stamps that it can be a little overwhelming trying to come up with a new design. I myself tend to just stick to the more simple ones that I have used before and are familiar with.

These are some samples that are in the kit, made presumably by my grandma. I don't really know who made them, they were just in the box when I got it.

The three designs on the left don't really look all that special but they are actually pretty complex. They are an example of what can be done when you combine several different stamps together. They are also more difficult because you have to really focus on lining them up properly to make them look seamless.

If you're really good like my grandma, you can actually carve the leather and stamp it to give it additional texture.

The other day I decided to make two simple book marks.

I measured and cut the raw leather and then created a border using a special tool - let's call it a "border tool." Then I spent time stamping out the design.

Before stamping you need to soak the leather in water briefly to soften it. I didn't show this step but you get the idea, put some water on it and let it absorb into the leather to make it soft. After that you just place the stamp and hit it with a hammer and thats basically it. One thing to note is that you have to make sure the stamp is oriented correctly. I turned the stamp in my hand at one point without realizing it and ended up with one set of horizontal lines among the rest of the verticle lines. There is only a little room for error in the process. Sometimes if you re-wet the leather and rub out the design or stamp over it you can hide mistakes. But that doesn't always work. Its best to go slow and do it right the first time and try to avoid mistakes.

You can also "tan" the leather before you stamp it, which darkens it and gives it a petina finish. You do this by wetting the leather and then massaging it with a rounded metal tool.

The sample pieces above are an example of what I'm talking about. You can see that they are darker and have a nice petina to them. The raw leather will also petina over time though, with basic use.

In the case of the book marks that I made I intentionally left them raw so that they would petina naturally with use. More reading equals more petina.

Its an 850 page Epic that won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986. Its a classic western and one of my top books that I read this year so far.

The story is set in the 1870s and follows Gus and Call, ex-rangers who run a small cattle company in the Texas town of Lonesome Dove. After learning that the state of Montana is basically a cattlemans paradise, with lush green fields and uninhabited land, they hatch a plan to be the first cattle farm in the state. They commandeer a massive herd of cattle and start their run from Texas to Montana. With them is a band of young and old cattle hands, a cook, a piano player, and a few other characters that we are introduced to and get to know along the way. There is also Jake Spoon a fellow ex-ranger, gambler, and ladies man and Lorena, the towns young prostitute whom nearly every man in the book is in love with. Lorena desperately wants to get to San Francisco and tags a long with the crew, much to some of their behest.

The book is a character driven story that also contains a lot of exciting plot points throughout that are both entertaining and thrilling. I found it to be a page turner myself that kept bringing me back again and again. I found even the lulls in the story to be interesting and I really couldn't wait to find out what would happen next.

It took me about three weeks to finish this one, because it is quite long. I originally set a goal to finish it in six weeks, but I reduced that to four when I realized that I was averaging about 200 pages a week. By the last two weeks I was reading about 250 pages, so I was actually able to finish it early on week three.

It used to take me a long time to read even a modest sized book, but this year I've been prioritizing reading and have increased my speed pretty significantly. I've been watching a lot less TV lately as well, which has had a huge impact. Summertime TV has been lacking for me, so instead of being bored watching a mediocre show that I'm not interested in, I've instead switched over to books.

After finishing Lonesome Dove I immediately sought out the other three books in the series quartet. I was lucky to find them all online in hardcover. It irks me a little that the book art of Lonesome Dove is slightly more modern then the other books, its a newer print, and it doesn't have the same sort of look and vibe to it. But I've got the whole series now, so thats the main thing.

Streets of Laredo is a direct sequel to Lonesome Dove and Deadmans Walk and Comanche Moon are prequels set in the previous two decades before the main story. The prequel books follow Gus and Call during their rangering days. So some of the characters will be different (I'm guessing) and I'm envisioning it to be a classic "Cowboys and Indians" sort of tale. We'll see when I read it.

Overall I thought that Lonesome Dove was a great American classic that's full of Romance and adventure. Its one that I would definitely recommend reading. I gave it 5 stars.

What do you think? Have you read Lonesome Dove or does it sound appealing to you? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
