I haven't seen some of them again, but I still follow their adventures on social media. Others, however, stayed closer or have itineraries that take them back and forth, eventually bringing them back to Buenos Aires. Whenever that happens, I don't hesitate to take a little trip to the city center to visit them and catch up. That's what happened with my friend Noe, with whom I've already reunited three times to keep adding more stories to our collection 😃.

Noe's visit to the city of Buenos Aires coincided with the DJ priest's event, which I had already been planning to attend for a long time. Having her there was a bonus, and without really planning it, we ended up organizing a weekend of sightseeing around the city. To make my stay more comfortable, I booked a room at the hostel where she was staying for the weekend, and we took the opportunity to explore as much as we could. On Saturday afternoon, we walked around some of the city streets since she didn't know them. At night, we went to the DJ's party and stayed until midnight, and the next day, we got up early to go sightseeing around the Recoleta area.

Well, that weekend there were two good reasons: one was the visit of a traveling friend I hadn't seen in a long time, and the other was the curious religious electronic music show. Both things came together to spend an incredible night of partying at what was an epic event with a massive turnout 😃.

Noe is a traveling friend I met while traveling in Salta in 2024. We shared a two-week volunteer experience in Cafayate, and since then, we have stayed in touch. We met again in Paraguay in May last year while I was still traveling, and it wasn't until April this year that we saw each other again. She continued her nomadic journey until that point, when she stayed in the city of Buenos Aires, and of course, I made a little getaway to go visit her.

Coincidentally, her visit coincided with the Saturday when the DJ priest's show was scheduled, so without a doubt, that was the plan we made together. Although neither of us is particularly fond of electronic music, we both enjoy partying, so we didn't hesitate to go. To make my stay in the city more comfortable, I booked a bed at the same hostel where she was staying, and from there, we used it as our base to go to the party, which had Plaza de Mayo as its epicenter. Although we arrived a little before the event started, there were so many people that we stayed about three blocks away from the square because it was no longer possible to move any closer. Nevertheless, everything was well organized, with screens and speakers so that the musical set could be heard clearly.

Until now, I had only enjoyed its advantages: being able to reach a place that is difficult to access by public transport, sharing expenses, and taking advantage of having someone drive me because I don't know how to drive. But on my last outing with the trekking group, I discovered the downside, which is having to depend on the car owner, who decides when they want to leave. This is what happened when we went to Saavedra, Buenos Aires, when the driver who took me decided to end the trip a day early and forced me to change my own plans for the outing 🙃.

Our original idea was to spend the entire Easter long weekend in the mountainous area of Saavedra, in the interior of Buenos Aires Province. We set off on Thursday, covering almost 600 km to get there. We arrived a bit late, so we went on a short night trek, and the following day, Friday, we did our longest trek along the entire Cura Malal mountain range. Everything was going well until Saturday morning, when I got the surprise of hearing over breakfast that my driver wasn't enjoying the trip and wanted to go back home. There were still two more days ahead of us, so I wasn't prepared for that. I checked the bus options for returning on Sunday night, but the schedules didn't work out either, which made me even more frustrated: I really didn't want to end my trip that day.

Unfortunately, there was no room in any of the other cars in the group, so I was thinking of giving up and having to go back home. But it was at that moment that I remembered Silvia and her husband, some friends I had met in Ushuaia who lived in Olavarría, about 270 km from where we were, along the same route back to the City of Buenos Aires. I immediately contacted Silvia and explained the situation, asking her if she could host me at her house for the rest of the long weekend. She said yes without any problem, and I ended up going to visit her on an improvised trip.

This area of Saavedra, in the interior of Buenos Aires Province, is characterized by its rolling hills interspersed with extensive valleys, making its landscapes unmistakable. Although the weather had threatened us with rain and thick clouds, things looked different during the second half of our outing. So much so that by the time we reached the two peaks we still had to see, the sun was shining in all its glory 😃.

During the first half of our hike, we had the opportunity to visit the Huellas de Amistad Refuge and the Confluencia, Pura Vida, and Ballena peaks. The Cura Malal mountain range is like a small mountain chain, so if you hike there, you'll come across a series of ascents and descents that lead you to different peaks. The terrain is made up of rocks and grass, so although it isn't particularly difficult, you need to pay some attention to where you step. At times, we even had to use our hands to help ourselves keep moving forward.

The next peak we saw was called Locomotora. Each of the small summits we visited was marked with a stone tower and a metal sign, which made them very photogenic. By then, the bad weather had already passed, and the sun was shining right above us. We took advantage of this short stop to sit down for a while, hydrate, and have something to eat. The good thing was that there were approximately 2 kilometers between each peak, making it a relaxed hike compared to others I've done.

One always associates Buenos Aires with the big city, but the truth is that if you travel a little into the interior, you can come across these wonderful places. During our Easter long weekend getaway, the trekking group and I traveled to Saavedra to explore the Cura Malal mountain range, which rewarded us with beautiful views at every step. Our day had started very cloudy in the morning, but by noon the weather gave us a break so we could keep walking 😃.

Our hike started around 8 AM after breakfast, and our first stop was the Huellas de Amistad Refuge. From there, we enjoyed the view of the valley for a while, and when we were ready, we continued up the mountain. This trail was not difficult at all, although we came across several rocks that made the route a little more interesting. At times, we even had to climb using our hands for support: nothing as complicated as rock climbing, but entertaining enough to make it fun.

After the refuge, our first peak within the mountain range was Cumbre Vigilante. This summit was marked with a stone tower, and of course, we didn't hesitate to leave our own. I was very happy that the weather improved because we were enjoying wonderful views from up there. It was even a little hot despite it being April, which lifted our spirits even more. From that point, looking ahead, we could see a little more of the route that lay before us.

After a journey that had lasted almost twelve hours from the city of Buenos Aires to the town of Saavedra, in the interior of the province, we were ready to start our longest adventure. Although we had arrived at night the day before and had walked around a little, we were all excited to see what the place would look like during the day. It seemed that the good weather wouldn't be on our side that day, but at least the conditions were suitable for a good hike, starting with the trail to Huellas de Amistad Refuge 😃.

The main idea of this trek was to cover as much of the Cura Malal Range as possible. In the interior of Buenos Aires Province, there is a series of small elevations formed by the Tandilia and Ventania mountain systems, which is what gives our province some "mountains." With the trekking group I had met a few months earlier, we decided to visit this range, very close to the town of Saavedra, about 500 km from home. To do that, we had stayed in a refuge the night before (in my case, I preferred to camp), and the next morning we started the hike around 8 AM.

Since we were exploring a mountain range, the first part was all uphill, on terrain full of rocks and dirt. During our trek, we would first reach Huellas de Amistad Refuge, an interesting place from where we would have a good view of the valley (or of whatever the clouds would allow us to see). On that long-weekend getaway, the trekking group consisted of more than 15 people, and everyone went at their own pace, so it took us more than an hour to reach the refuge, even though it wasn't that far from where we had started. Although I know I could have made it in half an hour or less, going in a group is fun and allows you to walk a little more relaxed.

I always have a plan in mind, a trip on the horizon, or at least an outing to look forward to in my day-to-day life. Now that I work Monday through Friday, my free time is a little more limited, but luckily, I found a group of travelers who organize weekend trips. During the long weekend in April, we organized a trip to the mountainous area of Buenos Aires, specifically to the town of Saavedra. I had never been there before, so it was the perfect opportunity to disconnect for a while 😃.

When you think of Buenos Aires, you probably picture the Obelisk and everything around the city, but the reality is that the province is huge and has so much more to offer. It even has some interesting mountain ranges where you can get some exercise and enjoy nature. To find these landscapes, you have to travel about 500 kilometers south, towards the Tandilia and Ventania mountain systems. That's exactly where we headed with the trekking group, to the Sierra de la Ventana area.

The long Easter weekend consisted of Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday off, so we started our trip early on Saturday. The trekking group had organized a visit to a place called Estancia Cerro Áspero, and according to the map, it would take us about eight hours to get there. In reality, my small group and I took our time, stopping for lunch, stretching our legs, and having some coffee, so we eventually arrived at the estancia after dark. It took us almost 11 hours to get there, and since we were the last ones to arrive, they were waiting for us to start a nighttime adventure. When we arrived, the estancia was basically a large open field with a mountain-style shelter, but since there were spiders and all kinds of insects around, I decided to pitch a tent and sleep outside 😂.

Eight nights in the neighboring country turned into the perfect opportunity to wander around from one place to another and try (unsuccessfully) to get some rest after long months of working full-time. We had some incredible days and enjoyed every last moment of them. If there was one thing we never ran out of, it was food, which we didn't want to stop trying, not even on our last night there.

At the beginning of this trip, I was a little worried and wanted to make sure everything would be comfortable. It was quite a challenge for me to find accommodation in a city I had never visited before, because I wasn't sure what would be a good location. In the end, after doing quite a bit of research online, I found a nice hotel in the old center of Foz do Iguaçu, very close to the bus terminal. It was also located on a main street, so we had several restaurants nearby that we tried during those days. My dad really liked one of them, and we ended up going there three times, including for dinner on our last night.

At that restaurant, we tried burritos, tacos, burgers, and meat with different side dishes. On our last night, while we were eating, a guy showed up who said he was a culinary student, selling the typical Brazilian brigadeiros. I had heard of them before, but I had never tried them. For about $5, he sold us four of these “chocolates,” which were kind of like truffles with different flavors. They were really delicious, and they made the perfect dessert to make sure we didn't leave Brazil without trying them.

It was a very intense week in which we managed to do all kinds of things, and although we didn’t get much rest, it was worth spending every minute exploring somewhere new. I’d say we ate a lot, walked a lot, and enjoyed ourselves a lot too. Since we were in the area of the triple border between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay, of course we had to take a little trip to see something of all three countries, and that’s exactly what we did 😃.

One thing I definitely didn’t expect to do during our stay in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, was go out at night. Having dinner with my dad was great, but he’s someone who tends to go to bed fairly early. I, on the other hand, because of my current job, where I finish my shift around midnight, have a somewhat unusual sleep schedule and can still stay up a little longer. Even though this was a family vacation, I didn’t miss the opportunity to use my always-reliable travel app, Couchsurfing, where I found a great group of people to go dancing with after dinner. As you know, I enjoy cultural exchanges, and luckily, I got to experience them on this trip as well.

Despite having gone out partying the night before, I got up very early the next day because my dad and I wanted to visit Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. This is the city next to Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú, so getting there took us less than an hour, including the border crossing. We weren’t asked for any kind of documentation to enter the city, which seemed strange to me at first, but I later understood that this is a city known for spontaneous shopping trips, and many people cross the border just for that. Ciudad del Este is famous for its shopping malls with affordable prices, especially when it comes to electronics, so it can be a good option to save some money if you have something specific in mind.

But even after visiting the Falls’ parks three times, my dad and I still had some time left to keep exploring before heading home. It was our last full day of vacation, and we wanted to make the most of it without having to move around too much. While browsing the map of Foz, we found the perfect place to go and explore 😃.

The city of Foz do Iguaçu is small, but you can still find a few tourist attractions to visit beyond the Falls. One of them is this curious Buddhist temple called Chen Tien, less than 15 minutes by car from the city center. We had read that we could get there by public transportation, but having Uber available made it easier for us to get there without getting lost. Even though it was Sunday, the temple was open, and admission was free.

Of course, there were a few rules to follow when entering, such as wearing appropriate clothing, keeping quiet, and respecting some areas reserved exclusively for prayer. There weren’t many visitors at the time of our visit, as the sky and the forecast were threatening a heavy storm. Still, my dad and I decided to go, and we would explore the temple until the rain told us it was time to stop (which, luckily, was more than an hour after we had finished exploring the temple). It was a peaceful way to spend our last day of vacation.
