O tal vez no.

o0o

He always wants to arrive home late because he no longer wishes to hear Vilma: "Where were you? Who were you with?" she repeats, her eyes wide with agitation, her face contorted, her voice raised—every single time he walks through the door. This follows a slow, grueling commute, where drivers—weary, overheated, and irate—pound on their car horns, desperate to get home quickly; perhaps they, too, have women like Vilma waiting for them, asking: "Where were you? Who were you with? Where?"

Or maybe not.

o0o

But he never touches his horn. He lets other cars pull ahead, cut him off, and screech their tires as they brake abruptly in front of—or behind—the bumper of yet another vehicle trying to forge ahead. He prefers to take his time, moving slowly, because he is thinking of Vilma’s constant nagging, the lingering scent of onions and stew that clings to her, her coldness in bed, her chronic headaches, her foul mood, and her utter indifference.
He prefers to keep himself occupied with anything at all just to avoid getting home early—so he busies himself by getting ahead on his own tasks, taking on the work of others, tidying his desk every single day, making photocopies of useless documents, shredding papers, or punching holes in stacks of sheets.

o0o

Yesterday was worse. Vilma shouted so loudly that the neighbors heard—they surely heard her. He remained silent, as always. He thought about how he should have organized the files—alphabetically, once again—or perhaps taken out the office trash, and waited for Vilma to fall asleep, exhausted from waiting.

This film, titled after the murderer’s last name: Barreda, was directed by Argentine filmmaker Daniela Goggi, who already had four films to her credit: Días de mucho, vísperas de nada (2005), Abzurdah (2015), El hilo rojo (2016), El rapto (2023), and the miniseries María Marta: El crimen del country (2022).

It is a fictional reconstruction of a true story that took place in the early 1990s in La Plata, the capital of the province of Buenos Aires. One Sunday morning, the doctor shot and killed his wife, his two young daughters, and his mother-in-law with a shotgun. The film recounts the trial and his sentencing to the maximum penalty (though he served only 17 years in prison), interspersed with scenes depicting the relationship between the murderer and his family.

![](https://images.hive.blog/DQmZfb53vv4hGHmCzKf8D9m3g62iYrFujusgx3XYemKiLjh/Poster%20de%20Barreda.png)

[Fuente]( https://www.filmaffinity.com/es/filmimages.php?movie_id=872320)

Several aspects of this film deserve to be highlighted, which I will address below, while trying to avoid giving away too many “spoilers.”

The story is supported by a fairly effective screenplay, thanks to which the narrative development achieves its purpose (though some omissions are noticeable). In addition to the director, Juan Cavoti, Josefina Licitra, and Donna Sanguinetti served as co-screenwriters.

The structure adopted is also noteworthy: an alternating montage, with various flashbacks and pauses, focusing attention not on the depiction of the crime (which is presented toward the end in a very raw and gruesome sequence) but on the central character: Barreda. An individual whose psychology and behavior are marked by hatred, intransigence, frustration, and coldness.

This characterization is brought to life by the masterful performance of Luis Machín, who succeeds in conveying the monstrous psyche that drives the behavior and speech of this father—a man capable of insulting his wife and daughters and of justifying his crime with biting cynicism in court before the prosecutor and the judges. The scene in which he meets his eldest daughter—which can be seen in the clip starting at 1 hr 16 min and lasting approximately 10 minutes—is one of the most telling.

![](https://images.hive.blog/DQme3LyXZVNSa59rCT8MPcoVRExhsVnG4hqSuerkxc4HxBs/Fotograma%20de%20Barreda%201.png)

[Fuente](https://www.otroscines.com/post/critica-de-barreda-pelicula-de-daniela-goggi-con-luis-machin-carla-peterson-y-mercedes-moran-prime-video)

Carla Peterson’s performance as the long-suffering and betrayed wife is equally outstanding, as are those of Maita Lamata and Margarita Páez as the daughters, and Mercedes Morán as the mother-in-law. The actors playing the prosecutor and the defense attorney also deliver commendable performances.

The cinematography (Christian Cottet)—whether in the lighting or the camera movements—achieves commendable results, whether in the slightly dark scenes, the tracking shots of Barrera’s movements, his shooting practice, etc. At the same time, the soundtrack (Luciano Supervielle) plays a significant role, right from the start during moments of suspense and in the finale with music that lightens the drama (or perhaps intensifies it in our perception).

I’d like to conclude by pointing out an aspect that horrified me—perhaps because of what Hanna Arendt called “the banality of evil”—namely, how segments of the population embraced this terrifying figure as part of a dangerous “normality.”

Personally, I don’t own a car, so I rely on existing transportation services to get around; sometimes I can use private transportation, but other times—most of the time—I have to make do with what public transportation offers. Every now and then, I’m able to tag along on a trip planned by a friend who owns a car. That was the case with this latest trip to Caripe.

![Captura de pantalla 2026-09-07 141059.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/josemalavem/23r1njk3xyC1o4HwFDEvuGNrdpR1Jgx1fH5wDx4Sui7FaLmB1YYQmqN6me1vJ8t4tUG4M.png)

Caripe, whether considered a city or a municipality, is located in the state of Monagas in Venezuela. In other words, it’s a place or region quite close to my home state (Sucre State) and, in particular, to my city (Cumaná). So whenever circumstances allow, I like to visit Caripe—for its natural beauty and climate, as well as for its people. A long time ago, I used to stay at the Hotel Samán, one of the oldest hotels in Caripe, which was then run by a dear poet and visual artist whose whereabouts I’ve since lost track of (I suppose she’s outside of Venezuela).

When we enter the Municipality of Caripe via the Cumanacoa road (that is, through the Montes Municipality in Sucre State), one of the first attractions is the Church of San Agustín, located in the town of the same name. This church was founded in 1972 and is notable for being covered on the outside with ivy—a decision the community made back then, which has been well preserved and retains its unique beauty.

According to some sources, the name Caripe, in the Chaima language, means “River of Squirrels.” I have not personally seen these beautiful animals, but it is possible that I might, especially in the grove.

Caripe is also known as “Caripe del Guácharo.” This is because the Cueva del Guácharo (Guácharo Cave) is located there; it is said to have been named as such by the indigenous Chaimas.
I’ve been inside it about twice; not this time, though. But here are some photos I took on that previous visit.

![Parque El Mirador 2.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/josemalavem/243zfxWxYCHeCVCB3t8BxpYPwgQZN7oB8iEGmfkhNQbVLDK69vGPnQjwHQ8xSyUbJoadi.jpg)

![Parque El Mirador 3.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/josemalavem/23sJxS2fiqmzGruVpxmW4qQYpYBZKR6xnkpFtzi511aCWy279T2hYbFs1wjPM6uvdg8ho.jpg)

![Parque El Mirador 4.jpg](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/josemalavem/2432KzKLyTigksY9v6266nUPYWT427wTRYQzWfByyou2mVPaoDoSQGfqngwU1LYYzveWe.jpg)

This visit to Caripe—at the request of those who allowed me to travel with them—was intended to visit El Mirador Park, a recently created park in the city that has become quite a tourist attraction; I would say, with some concern, that it might replace the appeal of Caripe’s natural beauty. That is the risk of these times, with their tendency toward the artificial.

![Paul Simon.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/josemalavem/AJebh3R3CBp8NzqSMUDiobVCJ7qXRZ5VAeoNHn2ogz6iGNV8dR2gRqGq1xVqFHi.png)

[Fuente](https://www.kissfm.es/2026/10/13/paul-simon-cumple-85-anos/)

English version

In Celebration of Paul Simon

Perhaps many #Hive users won’t know or have never heard of Paul Simon, who, to me, is one of the most important songwriters, guitarists, and singers in American pop—but who went even further, to the point of influencing us with his songs.

For those of us who grew up listening to the songs he and Garfunkel created and popularized—even though we came to them much later than when they were first released—we’ll never forget them.

That’s why I’m dedicating this post to Paul Simon, born on October 13, 1941, who is still with us today, thanks to God and music.

Paul Simon formed a duo of immense significance with Art Garfunkel. That’s how I first came to know him. When I was a teenager, I heard them on the radio stations of that era (how nostalgic!). His name is almost inseparable from Garfunkel’s. After they split up, around 1971, he continued to produce excellent music.

I’d say that, for the most part, I’m most drawn to his early compositions—the ones he shared with Garfunkel—which continue to leave their mark on our musical and emotional memories.

These are songs that convey a sentiment—one that’s not only liberating but also very close to our own sensibilities. Most of the lyrics are poetic, even ironic, and the musical compositions evoke very pleasant feelings, often reminiscent of folk music. And, of course, they feature complex vocal harmonies. I hope you’ll be able to appreciate his compositions.

That's what happened to me with A Son. It's a film directed by the Spaniard Nacho La Casa, who hasn't yet developed an extensive body of work as a filmmaker, though he has worked as a screenwriter and producer of TV series. It's a Spanish-Portuguese production from 2025, although it was widely released in May 2026.

![](https://images.hive.blog/DQmP51GWDoyW6SGiRDcQ9uxfRx7sgN95Fju5KUEvKYvaySX/Poster%20de%20Un%20hijo.png)

[Fuente](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Son_%282025_film%29#/media/File:A_Son_(2025_film)_poster.jpg)

The synopses I've found all start from the therapist's character. I think we should start from the child's character. Thus, I would construct a synopsis of the plot: An eight-year-old boy named Guille, with an apparently happy life, actually confronts unexplained sorrows, which the young therapist María will try to decipher through a highly empathetic relationship with him, and through which we will learn of hidden truths.

The film is a drama, but one that has been crafted with great delicacy and a touch of humor that somewhat softens the dramatic intensity. It is based on a novel of the same name by the Spanish writer Alejandro Palomas, which earned him the National Prize for Children's and Young Adult Literature in 2016. I am not familiar with it. We can assume that the spirit I mentioned might be present in the original novel, and perhaps the screenplay, in which the film's director participated, enhanced it.

That is an aspect of the film worth highlighting. Without wanting to give away any spoilers, I can appreciate both the boy's innocence and the school psychologist's actions, which stimulate the viewer's engagement with the story and its resolution. One achievement, which some critics have viewed with disdain, is the incorporation of imagined—I would even say fabulous—scenes into Guille's daily life, which refresh his simulated drama.

![](https://images.hive.blog/DQmSzZmp7Y7BCapYz84E3A2JTrdk5r1zwmKauDwqSx7MX1Z/Fotograma%20de%20Un%20hijo.png)

Still from *A Son* — [Fuente](https://img.rtve.es/i/fotograma-hijo_01777553733917.jpg)

Besides the skillful direction, I would highlight the performances of the three main characters: that of a newcomer, Ian Cortegoso, as Guille; Macarena García as the psychologist; and Hugo Silva as Guille's father.

I also thought the cinematography and camerawork were very good, and the music, while not particularly noteworthy, was effective. And, of course, the editing skillfully transitions between difficult and harsh moments and more relaxed ones.

I recommend this film in general, but particularly for users interested in the themes related to childhood and its problems, family, therapeutic treatment and imagination, always a saving grace.

[Fuente](https://www.johnlennon.com/)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxCWSHzxjlU

English versión

Imagine, John Lennon (A Poetic Exercise in His Tribute)

On October 9, 1940, John Lennon was born, an indispensable figure in modern or contemporary music, whom I assume most users of our platform will at least know by reference.

John Lennon is a milestone in our music, both for his compositions, with the Beatles or solo, and for his ethical stance, which is clearly expressed in the song that illustrates this post.

A few years ago, I wrote this post in his honor. I wrote a very short prose exercise to remember him now.

Imagine a different world, you sang in your unforgettable song. But your desideratum remains just that,
a wish, sometimes ever further away. It remains an aspiration, but the great world powers continue to deny it, sometimes I think increasingly so. Amidst these terrible trials, we continue to exist, celebrating the life we are given, the life that, sadly, they took from you precisely because of the denial of what you championed in your immortal song.

Three men came for him. Mom was in the kitchen, he was in the living room, and I was in my bedroom, playing. There was a knock at the door, and—as always, like someone with nothing to hide and nothing to fear—Dad opened it without asking who they were or what they wanted. Upon entering, they revealed their weapons and asked him to come with them. Mom came out then and asked where they were taking him, but Dad told her to calm down, that he would be back soon, and that it was all just a mistake. That was when I stepped out of my room and saw my father’s face—as well as my mother’s and the three men’s—taking in every detail, just in case I ever needed to recognize them again.

o0o

There were three of them: two tall, thin men and one heavy-set man of medium height. All three were in plainclothes—no uniforms—though Dad was told they were police officers. I watched them get into a gray car with visible license plates and tinted windows. From the car, Dad saw my mother and me crying—for the last time, though neither he nor we knew then that it would be the last.
That was the last time I saw Dad, but not the men; their faces haunted my nightmares. I knew what they looked like, the car they drove, their build and height. Later, I learned their names, their occupations, and where they lived. It wasn't easy to find out about them or get close to them, but time was on my side. No one grows suspicious of someone they see only once a year, by chance, out on the street.

o0o

I approached them unnoticed—gently, kindly, patiently—like a hunter stalking prey. To the one who loved animals, I spoke of dogs; to the one who loved to drink, I offered a glass. All three, just as I had planned, fell into a trap of kisses and embraces; they saw only the woman in me and forgot the child. Filled with delight, all three confessed: the assignment, the accidental death, their own clumsiness, my father’s bad luck. What they never confessed was where they had left his body. Just as I will never confess where I left theirs.
