On this episode of re-watching movies that I found hilarious, I chose what I’d call a classic. At least to Black people. You can already guess what my movie of choice was.

Think Like a Man (2012)

Directed by Tim Story and Produced by Will Packer, Think Like a Man is based on Steve Harvey's 2009 bestseller, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man. It’s a romantic comedy of four women, who just like every other woman in a relationship or seeking a relationship, desires something that would likely lead to full commitment and better, marriage. Their significant others, on the other hand, are not quite on the same page.

My Thoughts and Rating

I’m undoubtedly a huge fan of Black Hollywood movies. Not necessarily rom-com because somehow, they could mess that up, but regular Black movies. Apart from the present relatability, which is one of the most endearing things to experience, it just sits right with me, you know?

The jokes, the banter, the regular teasing of white people...(Lmao, one of my best things to see, no offense) The whole ensemble just adds to why it’s one of my most ideal genres to watch. At least when it’s done right.

Now, back to my main concern. I hinted at something in the beginning abour how you get to a certain age, or reach a certain awareness in life, and your perspective towards something almost goes a complete 180°. You see I read the book when it first came out, or when I could lay my hands on it. Snuck it from my older cousin’s wardrobe and eagerly devoured its pages. I was young and impressionable, then. And as far as I was concerned, so long as it was written in the pages of a book, it had to be true.

When I saw the movie, I felt the same. Steve Harvey was God’s great gift to women and we needed to be eternally grateful to him for revealing the secret psychology of men, and how to <del>trick</del> get them into loving us. Choosing us. I felt this way even after watching this movie twice in my very young adult years. But then I watched it today, and saw how very flawed it was. How utterly sexist, too, despite Harvey’s supposed good intentions.

The whole deal of “withholding the cookie” for 90-days to get a guy to love you, letting him be and feel like the man even though he is a deadbeat, ambitionless, never-do-well who couldn’t stomach wanting better for himself, and you're everything but that. The list is endless. But it all points to one thing...

Teaching the woman to sacrifice and compromise and continuously lower her standards because no matter a woman’s level of success in life, true fulfilment can only come from being with a man. So, she can afford to reduce herself to absolutely nothing, and manoeuvre her wat into "getting a man' who rightfully shouldn’t b able to look her in the face, let alone having a romantic affiliation with her, but hey! She needs to have a man, right?

So, I guess I can still afford to laugh at the quips and witty comebacks, but at the end of the day, a very, and I mean very bad message is being passed with this movie, and it may have taken me over a decade to see it, but boy am I glad I did.

The truth is that, Harvey did not lie. Everything he said was the God-honest truth about relationships, at least the patriarchy's idea of how it should be, and if you do what he says, greater chances are you WILL get yourself a man. But at what cost?

Anyway, I didn’t come to preach to you about all the abundant ills of the patriarchy and how it has cost, for generations, women losing bits and pieces of themselves all in the name of marriage until they one day look into the mirror, and see only a shell of who they once were. Anyone with, at most, two and a half functioning brain cells can deduce that. I came to tell you about the humour-filled, albeit, typical rom-com that is Think Like a Man. But it’s a Black-dominated film, so you should have a swell time. A solid 6.3/10. Have fun!

Jhymi🖤

It wasn’t until I sat in that chair and listened to the doctor tell me that the damage to my middle ear would make my hearing get exponentially worse till something intense or traumatic as childbirth happens to me, after which I’ll likely lose my hearing for life, that I understood how just one wrong diagnosis, one careless or hastily done medical check-up, one wrong statement can alter the entire existence of a person.

Fighting bitter tears, willing my fingers to stop shaking, my heart to stop palpitating, I started texting my sister and my partner to let them know that their loved one may, at some point, be unable to hear their voices ever again. Turns out, after a subsequent series of checks, they found a flaw in that diagnosis.

While the diagnosis itself was correct, the previous doctor failed to perform a particular test first before sending me to the next doctor for the this test. So, instead of a regular Flushing, I underwent Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA), and that was how the flawed diagnosis came about.

So, while I was grateful to God that I would not lose my hearing after all, I began to wonder what would have happened if the negligence had run its course. I had already been recommended hearing aids that I didn’t need simply because one person was in a rush, did a hasty check, and made a bad call on my health.

It’s why I cannot fault Chimamanda Adichie for saying she will never return to Nigeria. There’s something about nurturing a child in your womb, giving them life, and then losing that child because of medical negligence that utterly changes you as a person.

It rewires your entire structuring, so much so that the very resilience and faith in a country you talk about ever so beautifully is irredeemably lost. You don’t know what it means to lose someone not because it was that person’s time to go, but because you happened to be in a place without good healthcare and surrounded by people audacious enough to be careless with human life.

You don’t know the kind of resentment you may live with for the rest of your life. First with yourself, then with the environment and factors responsible and then yourself again. All because of one bad call. All because of carelessness. All because of negligence in the one sector that cannot afford to be so. The health sector.

It is also why, even though I was one of those who felt like the institution which expelled those medical students for participating in that “Take care of yourself, na Gen Z full hospital now” TikTok trend was doing too much, I’ve come to realize how flawed my thinking was, and invariably understand how such a statement would sound to someone who was nearly a victim of medical negligence. To someone who has suffered loss on account of medical negligence. To someone like Chimamanda Adichie.

Sadly, it had to take me being an almost-victim to realize just how devastatingly evil medical negligence is. It’s also made me rethink how some of my perspectives may only be because I did not put myself in the shoes of the right people.

Either way, if you’re reading this and you’re a medical personnel, or aspiring to be a medical personnel, please understand that you bear the responsibility for every call on someone’s life borne out of negligence. This country is already unbearable in every sense of the word. The least you can do is ensure that you play no part in why Nigeria happened to someone.

If you’re also reading this, and you have ever been a victim of negligence, either because it happened to you, or someone you love suffered it, I hope you can someday let go of the resentment in your heart. And understand that it was not your fault.

May we find peace within our hearts, may we learn to give grace to ourselves and those around us, and may we never forget that we may only have so much to say on an issue because it hasn’t happened to us.

Thank you.

It’s just like with the opening line of books. It could make or mar the entire book because you want to grab the reader or audience’s interest so strongly that it would only take a visceral tug to pull them away.

Sadly, many series are not able to achieve this. I talk about Mr. Queen any chance I get, and I may risk sounding like a broken record but it truly was a masterpiece in that regard. It grabbed my interest from the very first episode and didn’t let go. I haven’t seen a k-drama series since then that was able to pull this off as impeccably till I saw ‘Teach You a Lesson.’

Teach You a Lesson (2026)

Based on the Naver Webtoon ‘Get Schooled’ the series follow the prevalence of campus violence in schools. It becomes so serious that the South Korean government establishes the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (EPRB) under the Teacher Rights Protection Act. The goal is simple: Reform the educational system.

Whatever means necessary, no matter how unconventional. Physical or psychological pressure but the teachers and students of South Korea must get it right, and under the dexterous leadership of the Minister of Education, his ace and near son-in-law, an eccentric investigator, and a technophilic officer, they set to get the job done.

My Thoughts and Rating

Unless you’re familiar with how Korean action dramas are, you may think I’ve given you little to work with, and the premise isn’t scintillating enough to pique your interest, but I assure you, this movie is to die for.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a drama where each episode had its individual thrill. And not just that, each had a very poignant lesson. It was the most beautiful part of the drama.

Understanding that the educational system comprises of not just students but teachers, parents, and society as whole, is paramount. Trust me when I say, top to bottom were reformed.

For the characters, each interpreted their roles impeccably. My favourite character was Na Hwa Jin, the special forces officer and ace of the group as I’d earlier mentioned. I don’t know for anyone else but my love for him started from his facial features. He looks like if John Cena and Mark Walhberg had a baby, and I do like those two men considerably, I was immediately endeared to him. Superficial? Maybe. Sue me.

I love the themes explored, as well. Reformation. Love. Trust. The pressure on students by parents. Bully culture. You name it. I don’t know how a single cinematic piece can be so rounded and totally capture all that needs to be captured. ‘Teach You a Lesson’ was not some cute metaphor. The directors meant to teach you a lesson. Not one but several.

I haven’t written this highly of a series since Mr. Queen, so you already know what my doing so now means. Even if you claim to not be a k-drama lover, and I’m referring to the category that says this, but would watch Squid Game and Alchemy of Souls, yes, this is for you.

A solid 9/10 from me. No notes!

Then, I cleaned it off. Then, I started writing a poem. I cleaned it off again, and now I’m writing a think piece once more, but with a bit of a twist to it.

I love the idea of love so much. If I could name the five things I would happily talk about forever, love would be in the top three, or maybe even two. I love how deep it is. How wholesome it could be. How utterly overwhelming. How scary, as well.

And I think this last bit is the part that intrigues me the most about love. Love is fear. Because love is deciding every day to choose a person.

You’re not sure how deeply this person may or may not feel about you. You know very well that your heart may be broken severely in the process. You know you may just as easily lose your soul, as well. But you wake up every day and say, “I choose you.”

Because yeah, I keep choosing you.

How scary is that?

While this type of love is the romantic type of love, and the main reason I decided to write this post, there’s another love that exists. A love that fills me with a different kind of joy from the former. It’s the non-romantic kind of love. The type you have with your sisters and your friends and people you hold dear to you.

A friend of mine was hurt about something once. He was so sad and overwhelmed and broke down in tears right there on the phone. Speaking to him that day, comforting him, reassuring him, and letting him know that the things he faced didn’t define him, I was hit with this daunting wave of emotions that made me understand that this may be that other kind of love. In that moment, I could have done anything for him. And it’s scary, but it’s true.

It’s the same way I felt when I had a scare with one of my sisters who was so sick, I practically felt the life being snuffed out of her. And I got on my knees and asked that my life be traded for hers. It was the rawest form of love I’d ever experienced because I knew that if my life was actually requested in place of hers, I’d go gladly and with a smile if it meant she could live.

There are a few people I feel this way about. That I would do anything for. But I love that I have been able to experience this kind of love. Platonic and romantic. And maybe this post may have completely deviated from the way I wanted it to go. But well, when have I ever followed a script with these things? Lol.

I want to share a song that randomly started playing as I wrote this post. It’s beautiful, and though I may not know the lyrics, the rhythm is fitting for this post, and perhaps may give you a glimpse into the plethora of emotions coursing through my veins. Not butterflies. Just peace. Different waves and levels of peace. The kind I haven’t felt in a while.

Anyway, enjoy the song. I should hoard it, but I’m feeling way too happy to. You’re welcome, lol.

I think it's ingenious and shows the amount of meticulousness and care that went into the making of the movie.

It goes without saying that in this particular generation, we all know who a GOAT is, or those who tend to be described as GOATs. Basically, the “ace” or best” in a particular field. For instance, if I say Messi is the GOAT of football... I’m mansplaining, but you get my drift.

So, yeah, I am always giddy when it comes to animations. Like in Coco, Frozen, or the more recent Swapped, which I believe I’m yet to review, and this is no exception. There’s a particular song in this animation that I knew like my name even before I found out about the existence of the movie. I would have been listening to it now as I type, but I’ve currently got an ear issue (more about that later… or not) that requires me to stay away from any semblance of earpods. So, that’s a bummer for me, I guess.

GOAT (2026)

It’s young goat Will Harris’ birthday. He watches his idol, Jett Filmore, play roarball for his homeland, Vineland’s Thorns, and he aspires to be just like her. Fast-forward to ten years later, and the Thorns are yet to win all season. Jett tells their manager, Flo, that they need to find a sixth player to complete the team.

In a stroke of social media luck, now older Will – who’s been kicked out of his apartment for rent issues – finds himself on the team. He comes to realize two things, though: there are more battles outside the court than on it, and he really should never meet his heroes.

My Thoughts and Rating

I really don’t know why this film did not perform better at Box Office. When it comes to anthropomorphic movies, I get super excited, especially because of the humour level. I don’t know, but I think they pay extra attention to making the lines as witty as possible. Kudos to them, for real. The lines may not have been the funniest, but they still did a good job.

I love the storyline of this movie. I love the names too. “Mane Attraction” being a horse’s name? How genius is that? Everything was pretty much unique to me, again, as it’s common with movies of this nature. Obviously, there’s an element of predictability which makes things a bit lacklustre, but if you’ve seen as little as three animated movies, it wouldn’t be so much of a hassle predicting the way the storyline would go. The fact that I could in some scenes took nothing away from the movie, though. Absolute brilliance!

I loved the soundtracks, as well. You could see that they were well curated, and a lot of effort was put into reflecting the storyline and the message being passed in the movie. 10/10, absolutely no notes on that score. I would add what my favourite track was, but if you see the film, you’ll definitely be able to guess it.

All in all, GOAT was a delightful movie that encouraged faith in oneself and the undisputed beauty of teamwork. It may not have been the cinematic masterpiece that you return to over and over again, but it, without a doubt, leaves its mark. A solid 8.5/10 movie in my books.

So, let’s get right into it.

And yeah, this is very much spoiler-free...

Voicemails for Isabelle (2026)

Jill’s lifelong dream has been to become a baker. She lives in San Francisco and works under the tyrant-and-slave-master-like Chef Bastien. The highs and the lows of her life are regularly communicated to her sister, Isabelle, who’s back home in Austin and has a long-time terminal condition.

Safe to say that everything changes when Isabelle dies, and the only way Jill can cope with her life, which she now considers even more depressing, is through voicemails to her dead sister’s line. Unbeknownst to her, that line had been reassigned to an Austin-based real estate agent called Wes, and with each voicemail illicitly listened to, he becomes even more intrigued by the woman called Jill.

My Thoughts and Rating

I’ll start by advising that if you know you’re not going to be reviewing a movie immediately, especially one that deeply impacted you, positively or otherwise, please jot down notes somewhere. Your thoughts on certain scenes and stuff like that. So that when you do want to review that film months later, you won’t be at a loss for words, trying to remember the emotions you felt seeing the cinematic piece. Same goes for books, by the way.

Anyway, I went into this movie rather blind. Maybe that’s not putting it right because I knew what to expect. My eyes glazing over in boredom, and my fingers perpetually hovering over the fast-forward button because of the excess of cringe I’m witnessing. So glad, however, to announce that my expectations were cut short, as none of this happened. I was delightfully entertained.

With genres like rom-com, which I have grown a bit of an aversion to, movies and books alike, the plot usually follows a certain way. For whatever reason, girl meets guy; they may or may not get off on a great start, they eventually do, and for a moment their lives feel perfect; something happens: some secret, untruth, lie by omission, you name it. The parties are devastated and separate; some time passes, and they finally reconcile. The end.

While this movie did not, in totality, deviate from this framework, the intrigues and intricacies of the plot made it rather a breath of fresh air. A kind of love and bond that only exists with family. So pure and nearly palpable. That’s the kind of love that exists in this movie. It is wholesome, devoid of needless steamy scenes, and makes for an excellent family watch.

I love that the emphasis was not on the romance in itself, and even when that came into play, they found a realistic way to weave it all into a cinematic masterpiece. Already, the storyline in itself is unique, and not the overused Hollywood plot we’re used to.

I would say I tried my best not to give spoilers, but the truth is, I wouldn’t even be able to, even if I were so inclined. Either way, this is a deliciously beautiful movie, and cliché as it may still be to a few, it was a delight to behold, and a relevant reminder to me of the many amazing forms love takes. 4/5 star rating from me. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves love, and even those who merely tolerate it.

I heard someone say this once, and somehow, it stuck with me. I think of this statement at odd times. Like now, when it’s way past my bedtime, and I know I’ll be up to start the daily hustle in less than 4 hours, but can’t bring myself to close my eyes.

Or now when I had an entirely differently topic to write on, but found myself starting with these words instead.

To be cringe is to be free.

And I think...
What does it mean to be cringe?

So, I look within, and I see...

To be cringe is to be you.
So unapologetically.
Much without the binds societal norms shackle you with.
What is proper, what is aesthetic, what will please the eye.

You think less of these and more of how happy you can be.
The fulfilment in getting atop a table, and breaking into a dance.
Singing at the top of your voice, mindless that you are no Celine Dion.
An enthusiastic greeting to all you see.
An overly animated laugh.
Not in selfishness or a yearning for attention.
But in your rawest, deepest thoughts, you are simply being you.
Authentic and true.

And as I ponder on these, I realize again.
That this, in its entirety, is what it means to be free.
Understanding that in a world always displeased.
And wagging tongues that forever will abound.
The least you owe yourself is liberation.
The secret to happiness to you now revealed.
Loving yourself so earnestly and wholesomely...
Ridding your mind of the never-ending urge to satisfy the world’s limitless expectations.
Or give in to her eternal demands.

So, I say to you. To me. And to me, especially.
If all of this and more forever will ensue,
Why not choose to be free?
In totality?
Verily, I say unto thee...
To be cringe is to be free.
To be you, without expectation, devoid of validation.
Just you. Just free.

And what better quick movie to review than the one I’d only recently seen? I’m a big fan of black movie. Black films, series, sitcoms, music, or anything else. Because if there’s anything you can be sure of in the first three things I listed, it's the ever-flowing presence of comedy, and who does not like a good comedy, am I right?

I’m not a big fan of Tyler Perry’s productions, even though I’ve enjoyed a few of his productions like Acrimony, Sistas, (at least the first few seasons) and bits and pieces of the Madea franchise. I’ve come to believe, based on the overwhelming ton of evidence, that he may or may not get off on the suffering or glorification of suffering of black women. And I mean, that doesn’t mean it is not true, but the over-emphasis on a lot of negative black stereotypes has to get tiresome at some point, right?

Anyway, I’ve spent nearly 200 words on a premise that almost doesn’t relate to the actual film we’ll be reviewing today.

Why Did I Get Married Again? (2026)

A production of Tyler Perry, Why Did I Get Married Again? is the third instalment in the Why Did I Get Married? franchise. There are a lot of returning characters, with a new addition of Taraji P. Henson as Roselyn.

Nearly twenty years after the last instalment, the group is reuniting again, but this time for the destination wedding of Marcus and Angela’s daughter, Jasmine, to Roselyn’s son, Wesley. It’s supposed to be a breezy affair, but as it happens with most reunions, there is drama, and in this case, a lot of it, especially after the friends come to realize that their children may be repeating the mistakes they had made as youths.

My Thoughts and Rating

Now, you will notice that I did not use the spoiler feature, and that is because I do not plan to give spoilers of any kind, so this may be a surprisingly short review. I will start, as always, with the good parts, or part, and that is, for the most part, the comedy was good.

The usual comic facial expressions and somewhat exaggerated sounds just gave the whole film the typical black aura it was supposed to have. Did I as much as crack a smile? However, no, I did not. But that may not be the movie’s fault. I may just be a frigid b-word, even though I will still argue that even this cannot rob me of the top-notch sense of humour I have.

Either way, if you’re heavily into black-themed movies, you may still most likely enjoy this.

Now to the issue I had that robbed the little joy I had prior to seeing this: TOO. MUCH. INFO. DUMP. At the time I saw this film, I had not seen the previous instalments. At least not in its entirety, but even I thought that the info dump was too much. Too much, way too much talking for my liking. It seemed there was more narration than actual drama in this movie.

Everyone seemed to be explaining and explaining, and after the first three “groups settling down to do some parody of a pep talk and motivational speech” sessions, I was completely done and sped through the remaining scenes. Saying it was exhausting would be an understatement. Did that action mean I missed out on things that would have endeared me to the storyline? Probably. But I really cannot bring myself to care.

As I said, I may just be a cynic, and this movie may be flawless to some other person. That is perfectly understandable. But for me, it’s just a no-no. I could have given more reasons, but if you’re more of a show than tell person like I am, you may just get my frustration with this particular bit. 2.5/5 stars. It may be TP’s production, but I genuinely expected better.

I hope this doesn’t switch to a full-on review of the above series because this post wasn’t meant for that.

You know what?

I’ll just review all three. Give you a taste of this gem Because contrary to a lot of beliefs, I’m actually a very nice person. You’re welcome.

Before we begin, anyone who knows me knows I’m a big hoarder of the things that I like. So, I would only share art of some form if I didn’t like it that much, or I absolutely trust the people I’m sharing it with to appreciate it as much as I do or even more than I do, or finally, if I’m extremely tired of hoarding and think the rest of the world can have my remnants. Just kidding. Figure out what category you think you fall into, though. So, yeah... Be grateful.

(Btw, yeah. I know I’ve said this a number of times, so if you’ve read this before, read again, and keep scrolling. Thanks!)

Anyway, I’ll start with...

Big Mouth (2017)

https://youtu.be/G7VvmGZ3sWU?si=l_FutPPivUqJdX68

I think a group chat of people who have seen this sitcom and actually enjoyed it should be created. Because we constitute one of the most depraved lots enjoying something like this, or maybe we’re true to ourselves and see this for the sheer entertainment and educational value it possesses.

Andrew and Nick are “best friends by debauchery threshold”, as I like to say. They’re all coming of age, or coming into the whole mess that is puberty and teenage life, and in the typical way teens and preteens like to make a chaos of everything, including their existence, especially their existence, these two don’t disappoint.

But the reality of all that happens in this sitcom far transcends my somewhat shabby summary. I would say I don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it, but I don’t think it’s remotely possible to spoil a sitcom like this for anyone. No matter the unhingedness (for lack of a better expression) you think goes on here, I promise that it’s barely scratching the surface.

Oh, and it’s 8 seasons long, and about 10 episodes per season, so you’re in for a ride. 9/10 rating from me. You’ll see why once you watch. With an open mind, of course.

Human Resources (2022)

https://youtu.be/m1Dhf4O4iEk?si=hVzLaahudS7OU2hU

And the moment you’re done seeing Big Mouth, move straight onto this because it feels like a bit of the behind-the-scenes. It’s like that animated movie of your emotions, and how they play out in your head. Only raunchier, and similar in a lot of ways to the “A LOT” that is its predecessor.

I rather enjoyed it, though. I think I forgot to mention that there are hormone monsters that do a whole lot of good to these impressionable teens. If you look at it from the liberal point of view, that is. So, yeah, I think you’d love this. Not as much as the main deal, but awfully close. 8/10 from me. No notes.

Mating Season (2026)

https://youtu.be/aqCtC-ytN74?si=OfjP2SQHSR2mHYa5

I don’t know how well I liked this, but if Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg made it, you can be sure that it’ll be worth your while. I jumped on it the moment I saw it, and I mean, it’s no Big Mouth ( I genuinely don’t know what can beat that one), and it may not give it a run for its money, but you’ll be entertained and pick up a knowledge or two from it. 7.5/10. Hope the next season does what it’s meant to.

Well, that will be all the time we have, peeps.

See you in our next unfiltered review.

That this is the one thing that brings me back on Hive.

Not the family I used to have here, not my poetic freedom, not even the overwhelmingly powerful longing I’ve had for the last few weeks to write something other than work related stuff.

It’s this. This brings me back.

And I have no words to explain how it feels to be back.

Maybe not back per se. I can’t bring myself to predict how long I’ll be here.
But being able to do this. Just write. It’s exhilarating.

Even though the final straw that broke the camel’s back isn’t one of the most ideal things.

When I came back on here, the first thing I did was to check the communities, see those that were still functional, and unsubscribe from the dormant ones. A task that is harder than it looks, and left my tummy in knots for some reason.

Things look the same but feel a lot different from what I’m used to. Maybe I’m not accurately describing things as they are. But yeah, let’s just see how it goes.

It will surprise you to know that I wrote the last paragraph, and every other paragraph before almost a week ago. It was a different time, then, and there were a plethora of emotions I was feeling at the time which I no longer feel now. So, it feels a bit less authentic trying to write this piece with the same energy, but I owe it to myself to continue regardless. Not the same emotions, though, but at least the same person.

Anyway, nothing sad or enraging or upsetting has happened to me because you do know that creative writing just like poetry is at its fullest when there is a spontaneous overflow of emotions. I feel quite numb, to say the very least, so you can already guess that it’s impossible for my numbness to overflow, lol.

However, I suppose I can talk about my numbness. There’s so much to rant about, so much that weighs on my mind, so much that gets me so royally furious, but when the anger is all spent, all the raging emotions overcome, there’s this hollowness I feel that subsists for a long time.

I’m sure this must be the most uncoordinated ramble you’ve read in a while, so I will, most kindly, spare you the horrors of reading any more of my reflections. At least until I get it together, and come up with something more creative, as it is compelling and well put together. I’ll also probably stash this in a community that I have the most liberty, which is code for “I hope no one gets to read this.”

I’m so glad I got to do this, though. For the second time, it’s such a pleasure being on Hive once more.

Talk to you all soon, people.

Jhymi🖤

Image is mine... I mean, who else would it belong to? Lol.
