Pickleball and a neighborhood walk: October 21 2026

It’s great to be home after the anniversary trip with my husband that I mentioned the other day. Today was a very active day! I played pickleball in the middle of the day at a nearby club, then worked at my desk job for several hours, then went out for a few loops around my neighborhood.

The past few days have been lovely with sunlight and fall color. In honor of WednesdayWalk hosted by @tattoodjay I’ll share some more photos from a walk on my trip since I only took one on my evening walk.

On the last day of our anniversary trip we visited lighthouses and harbor lights. It was a great day for getting steps! But I didn’t manage to post that day.

This one is part of a set of two harbor lights which are lined up one several hundred feet behind the other. When ships on Lake Michigan come into this harbor, they know they are pointed in the right direction when the align the two lights.

This is the light at the back furthest from the harbor.

This is the light at the front closest to the harbor.

There’s a very long walkway between the two lights.

There’s also a beautiful nature walk in the woods next to the harbor lights.

Next we visited an actual lighthouse, which you can climb inside, for a fee. It’s 97 steps to the top.

They have some rooms decorated with historic implements and clothing from when the lighthouse was manned by a lighthouse keeper.

Next we visited a lookout tower that has a long walkway to the top accessible by wheelchair. You can also take stairs but the walkway was so scenic that most people went that way.

Plus there were a lot of plaques describing the flora and fauna of the area.

Everywhere we went in the are there were descriptions of shipwrecks in Lake Michigan. These are the plaques at the top of the tower.

After our trip to the top of the tower, we enjoyed a picnic in the nearby grove, surrounded by autumn trees.

It was a great way to spend our 30th wedding anniversary!

@gabmr offers an unconventional science fiction story that deals with a number of evolving issues. Think the Matrix, or Running Man, but go beyond that. A young man describes a nightmarish environment in which people dance with each other in a way that seems more predatory than social. We assume these are people, anyway. By the end of the story we wonder, as the young man discovers he himself is a cyborg. The story is complicated, and it may take a second read to pick up all the clues, but they are there. It's a disquieting piece, without having any overt signs of horror. Beautifully written.

This week's prompt is: "Spooky."

Halloween is nearly here, and for those of you who take delight in celebrating this annual ode to all that is frightening, it is your time to shine!

There are many things you can do with this prompt. Write a spooky tale of fear and fright, whether it's about jack-o-lanterns that come to life, a tale of the supernatural that will strike fear in the hearts of readers like the classic tale of the headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow , or a tale of spooky encounters on Halloween night.

Stepping around Door County Wisconsin for my 30th wedding anniversary: October 18 2026

Hard to believe 30 years have come and gone since my wedding day! My husband and I are celebrating this fun milestone with a weekend get-away to a lovely corner of the earth called Door County.

It is a peninsula that extends northeast from Green Bay Wisconsin into Lake Michigan. The peninsula is lined with beautiful little communities along the bays.

For the last two nights we stayed in the town of Sister Bay where there was a massive fall festival going on, and now we are in another town called Egg Harbor.

Today we took a ferry boat from the very tip of the peninsula to an island called Washington Island where we spent the day. It was a gorgeous fall day!

We took a beautiful hike through some woods with golden light illuminating the fall leaves, then had lunch on a lavender farm. Here are some pics! Let’s start with the hike.

And next, the lavender farm.

They have a lovely little outdoor restaurant and a beautiful store with many products made from the lavender they grow.

We visited a famous beach, called Schoolhouse Beach, where the rocks on the beach are white and polished smooth, and it is illegal to take them.

Here are a few pictures from the ferry.

We had a rather hilarious mishap because when we went back to the ferry to return to the peninsula, we were really early. I thought I had nearly an hour until the ferry was going to leave so I went back to the place where we took our nature walk earlier that day and walked the same trail. I returned with 10 minutes to go before the ferry was scheduled to leave but it took off early!

I watched as the boat with my husband on it started its journey across the bay. It turned out to be fine. The personnel believed me that I didn’t have a ticket because it was with my husband and they let me jump on the next one. So he just had to wait about 20 minutes on the other side.

Short Story Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Nightmare."

As we all know, a nightmare is a very bad dream in which terrible things happen. Perhaps you witness your own demise, or that of a loved one. Perhaps you are chased by monsters, or evil spirits emerge from the walls in your horrible dream. It is a huge relief to awaken from such a nightmare to discover that it was not real. Whew!

But the word "nightmare" is not limited to actual sleep or actual dreams. It also pertains to situations and circumstances. Nightmare jobs. Nightmare relationships. Nightmare scenarios. With Halloween just a few weeks away, this is a great time to think about scary situations and to write imaginative tales about witches, goblins, monsters, evil wrong-doers and more.

Lost dog search and pickleball x 2: October 7 2026

I never sat down today! After coffee, breakfast and pet care, I ran off to a mid-day pickleball open play session I had committed to, then dashed back home and worked for several hours (at my stand-up desk; I literally cannot work sitting down), then I dashed off to an evening of pickleball that I had been invited to by some friends, and then on my way home I saw that a bunch of my neighbors were out on the street with flashlights and got a text that they were looking for one of our neighbors’ dogs, who had been missing for a few hours.

Naturally, I joined the search. Well, I will tell you that it didn’t look good. First of all, the fact that it was pitch dark and the dog had already been gone for quite a while was a bad sign. It’s a very tiny dog. Our neighborhood is near a highway on one side and is surrounded by woods and rugged terrain that houses a lot of coyotes, owls, raccoons and other dangerous predators.

A bunch of us searched and called for a very long time. I walked out along the highway, fearing what I would find. But someone had to. I walked to some other neighborhoods. Finally, I let my neighbor know I was headed home and to please let me know if he got his dog back.

But there’s a happy ending to the story! The dog owner posted on the Nextdoor app. And several hours after finding the dog, a couple posted that they found a dog on the Nextdoor app. Someone saw both of the posts and got the people connected. Whew!

Why didn’t the people who found the dog do something to find the owner earlier? Good question. Evidently the had a commitment to go play volleyball and didn’t have time until they got back home!

So that was my day — literally on my feet and moving for about 14 hours.

And the only pictures I have to show for the day are a picture of my pickleball friend’s dogs and one of a Halloween decoration I saw in a yard while looking for my neighbor’s dog.

Aren’t they cute? They watch us play.

Pumpkins and pickleball: October 7 2026

Have I mentioned how much I love working part time? It’s so great being partially retired. There are a few days out of the “work week” when I don’t have to log in at all if I don’t want to. Today was one of those days.

Instead I went to a farm stand with my daughter and granddaughter, booked a winter trip to the tropics, and played pickleball for several hours. My favorite type of day!

I really had fun taking pictures of my granddaughter surrounded by pumpkins and fall flowers.

Walking, Pickle Ball

My love of pickleball knows no bounds: October 5 2026

I’ve found the sport I will play until I drop dead! I really really love pickleball. I’ve made the most amazing friends, and am now playing four days a week. I love how it keeps me moving, active, agile and strong.

I managed to get a picture taken with a few of the women I play with regularly. And yes, we were sipping on special beverages while playing!

Short Story Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Rude awakening."

“Rude awakening” is an expression for a sudden and often unpleasant realization that things are not as easy. Or a person might have a sudden awareness that there is a cumbersome glitch in plans. Or perhaps a letter, email or text arrives that delivers a "slap-in-the-face" message that the receiver was not expecting.

A "rude awakening" can be literal — for example, a person might wake up abruptly to an alarming sound, unexpected visitor, or dangerous situation. But more often the rude awakening is symbolic. It is the moment when reality shatters someone’s expectations. A new employee might discover that a dream job is a nightmare. A traveler might learn that an idyllic destination isn’t what it seemed. A person who felt confident in a relationship might suddenly realize their feelings aren’t reciprocated, or that the simple, easy happiness they believed in is just a layer on top of a very complicated truth.

Early fall colors: October 3 2026

My husband and I got out for a walk at dusk, and ended up going for a much longer walk than either of us had planned. But it was lovely. It was nearly dark by the time we got home, and we still hadn’t started dinner. That is not uncommon this time of year. We always want to grab those last bits of sunlight on these days that are becoming noticeably shorter by the day.

We walked through neighborhoods, then through a portion of our favorite park, then through the grounds of the grade school our kids attended, which seems so long ago now. What memories!

The colors are just turning. It will be a few weeks yet before they are at their peak.

Isn’t it funny how some of the maples turn colors on one side first?

It’s fun to see the Halloween decorations coming out. It seems like they get better every year!

The last few pictures are from the park. I’m not sure I captured its serenity or beauty, but it it is a truly lovely place, in all seasons.

Walking

Costco and pickleball: October 1 2026

Today was a great day for steps! My daughter, granddaughter and I did a big Costco run because I was running out of everything and hadn’t stocked up on stuff for a while, I couldn’t believe how busy the place was in the middle of a Thursday!

My granddaughter (who is seven months old) really had fun checking out all the products that went into the cart. Her favorite thing was the colorful pack of toothbrushes. She also got to try one of the food samples.

Later at home, my cats had to inspect everything!

In the evening I had pickleball league. It is so so so much fun. I play with a big group of really awesome women who love to play and enjoy competitive games but are also there for the fun and the socializing.

A few of us played for almost two more hours after everyone else left!
