"The Island of the 500 Murders": The Dark Side of the Presidio Modelo

Imagine a building so perfect in its design that it seemed like a work of art. Five circular structures, with a central tower from which a single guard could watch every corner. That was how the Presidio Modelo on the Isle of Pines (today the Isle of Youth) was conceived. A project of the dictator Gerardo Machado, inaugurated in 1931, that promised to be a model of "re-education."

But the reality hidden behind those circular walls was very different. The prison quickly became a symbol of horror. The journalist Pablo de la Torriente Brau dubbed it "the Island of the 500 Murders." Between its opening and 1959, 763 deaths were recorded inside its facilities. They were not natural deaths. There were stranglings, drownings in the swamps, beatings, poisonings, and prisoners pushed from the top of the circular tiers.

The prison that turned against its creators

The history of the Presidio Modelo took an ironic turn with the Cuban Revolution. After the assault on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, a young lawyer named Fidel Castro was sent there along with his companions. He was held there for 22 months, starting in October 1953. Far from being broken, Castro turned his cell into an intellectual operations center. There, using invisible writing techniques, he reconstructed and managed to smuggle out of the prison his famous self-defense speech: "History Will Absolve Me," which would become the political program of the Revolution.

The young Moncada fighters did not merely survive; they organized, studied, and emerged stronger. Their release, on May 15, 1955, thanks to a popular amnesty, marked the beginning of a new stage of struggle that would culminate in the triumph of 1959.

From "den of terror" to National Monument

Today, the Presidio Modelo is the opposite of what it once was. It was declared a National Monument and functions as a museum and research center. Its walls, which once enclosed screams and death, now tell the story of resistance and the struggle for freedom. The site is undergoing a restoration process to slow its deterioration and keep its memory alive.

The history of the Presidio Modelo is the story of a failed experiment in "modernity" that became a nightmare, and of how that same place, paradoxically, became the cradle of a movement that would change the destiny of a nation.

No eran muertes naturales.

Hi, my lovely Hive people! 💛

I’ve always thought the best thing you can do is make time for yourself and do what you love… and today I finally made it back to a place I used to visit often as a child. Being there again brought back so many memories and such a beautiful feeling of nostalgia.

I’m sharing some photos I took on the way to a reservoir next to a small hill. This place is called El Abra, and it’s on Isla de la Juventud, also known as Isla de Pinos, in Cuba.

What I love most about this place is the nature all around it: that intense tropical green and the glow of the sun 😎 while the afternoon is still young.

When we arrived, I noticed something that made me stop and think: the water level 💧 was very low, even though it had rained quite a bit these past few days. It was one of those realities you only truly start to notice when they touch you closely…

Drought 🏜️ is gaining ground step by step, and we barely notice it. We only start to see it once it’s already firmly rooted in our reality.

In places like this, you can always spot the occasional fisherman trying his luck 🍀, hoping to bring something home to eat. And there are also people who are happy just to come here and enjoy the quiet, green views, to meditate, or simply to enjoy being alive.

Photos taken with my Redmi 12C mobile phone 📲

I hope you enjoy the scenery as much as I did. 🌿

And you—do you like going back to those childhood places that bring back so many memories? I’ll be reading your comments. ✨

Hello dear community 👋, today I bring you a curious story accompanying the photographs...

Grandma Elara used to say that that orchid was the keeper of the family secrets.

"Look carefully, Sofía," her grandmother told her one afternoon, as the sun filtered through the leaves, creating flashes of white light in the background. People believe that orchids are fragile, that they need glassing and extreme care. But look at this one.

Twelve-year-old Sofia had just moved into her grandmother's house after her parents separated. She felt like a plant torn from its soil, withered and scared. He looked at the flower. Its petals looked like velvet, slightly curled at the edges, and in the center, a small pale pink tongue.

"She seems delicate," Sofia murmured.

"It is," answered the grandmother, approaching the tree. But look where he lives. It has no land to sink its roots into. It clings to wood, withstands torrential rain, strong wind and scorching sun. He doesn't complain, he doesn't hide. Simply, every morning, it decides to bloom with an elegance that defies the entire jungle.

That night there was a big storm. The wind hit Sofía's window panes, and fear returned to her chest. He thought of the orchid, so exposed to the elements, with its stem so fine and its flowers so bright. She was sure that in the morning she would only find torn petals scattered on the ground.

At dawn, Sofía ran out to the garden, with the dew still wet her sneakers. The mango tree had lost some leaves, and the ground was covered with broken branches. But there, standing out among the damp, unfocused greenery, was the orchid.

Rainwater glistened on its magenta petals. The stem remained erect, defiant. The flower had not only survived the storm; It seemed to have absorbed all that water and all that fury to shine brighter under the first rays of the sun.

Hello beautiful people of Hive, today I will share with you some photographs taken with my mobile of a beautiful beach on the island where I live, which has a historical link with piracy...
Isla de la Juventud, called Isla de Pinos during colonial times, was a refuge and strategic base of operations for pirates and privateers during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.

Its position south of Cuba, near the sea routes of Spanish galleons loaded with treasure from Mexico and South America, made it an ideal place to stalk and attack ships.

There were many famous pirates linked to the island such as:
· John Hawkins and Francis Drake: The famous English pirate John Hawkins arrived at the Isle of Pines in 1565 to stock up on water and repair his ships. He was accompanied by a young Francis Drake, who also visited the island on several occasions.
· El Olonés (François l'Olonnais): The French pirate known for his cruelty, Francisco Nau, El Olonés, maintained a camp on the island in 1660.
· Henry Morgan: The famous Welsh pirate Henry Morgan repaired his ships on the Isle of Pines before his failed attempt to attack Havana.
· "Pata de Peg" (Cornelius Jol): This legendary Dutch pirate, known as "Pata de Peg", also used the island as a refuge in 1628.
· "Calico Jack" (John Rackman): In the 18th century, the Englishman John Rackman was another of the pirates who frequented its coasts.

What is the Colony hotel?

The Colony Hotel was built in the 1950s, long after the piracy era. It was a private hunting and fishing preserve for President Carlos Prío Socarrás and later a hostel for students. Its historical value lies in the fact that it is located in a place that was a vibrant scene of piracy, and until today "its surroundings contain legends of privateers and pirates, treasures and other curiosities."

In short, Colony Beach is not a "pirate" beach in the sense that a famous pirate used it personally, but rather it is a point within an island that served as a safe harbor for many of them, forming part of its fascinating history.

"Safe Harbor" is not a metaphor for a destination, but for the bond. Amid an abstract landscape of storms, acrylic splashes and dark backgrounds that threaten to swallow everything, two paper boats (symbols of fragility and journey) sail in a turquoise calm.

What saves them from drifting is not a stone pier or a firm shore, but a simple wooden stick and a rope that joins them. It is the visual representation that, even in the most absolute chaos, true refuge is found in that which connects us with others. Birds on the horizon and flashes of white light burst in as a reminder that there is always hope through the darkness. A work about resistance, companionship and the beauty of supporting each other. 🌊⛵️✨
I share this work because I believe that true refuge is not a place, it is a bond😉
...safe harbor... 2012
acrylic/canvas
55x40cm

...puerto seguro...
