Dash Cam Install Job, Building, Costco, Truck, Trailer - Wednesday

After getting the boys to school yesterday morning I was up at one of my client's houses and installed a dash cam in her Prius. It was nice and mellow and took me just an hour to get both the front and back cameras installed and the wires all tucked under the trim. I had to fish one through behind the glove box but the trim all went back nicely and you can't tell I had them loose. Forgot to get a pic of the install. She texted me this afternoon that she tested the system and it works great.

Even more build out is going on below her house along Paiute and the heavy machines were working hard as I went in and out.

Went to Costco and it is SO nice to have my car now as I had plenty of room for everything I bought as well as my tools still in the back. What a difference it makes!

Got home and decided to move my truck out to the yard. Started it up as I couldn't get it to move pushing it and seriously, WTF!? it showed no codes or check engine light. I found out it took the second starting for it to pop BUT the engine never went to limp mode!!!! I put a couple miles on it in the yard and on our road even with the light on, but it never bogged the motor down! Only the random misfire code #300 is hitting now and it seems like it will be able to be driven to a repair shop, likely after the new year when we have more funds available.

Even managed to pick J up as he got off the bus. I REALLY REALLY want it back going again as I really miss it. The new car is great and I know I need a new front right axle as the cv joint is what is bad. I will be calling Tire-rama tomorrow to try and get them to bring the axle in ahead of the Tuesday next week drop off so it will take less time for them to get it done before doing an alignment on the car.

Cleaned out the car port that the truck spent the last year under and now @stryeyz can park in it for winter. The truck is in the yard. I finally remembered to hook the trailer up for the grain run this morning.

Did I mention I miss my truck?

Got the numbers/bid built up for the water feature and will contact Song about it a bit later this morning.

Grain run now, then empty it to the pen, boys to school, then I have to hit Home Depot for a grab bar then go to install a new shower bar for the shower head and the grab bar in a shower of a elderly senile woman down by SCC.

Sunrise, Water Feature Bid, Fire Zone, Lunch, MY NEW CAR!, Lights/Book Case Job, Kraken - Tuesday

It was another great sunrise yesterday morning as I took @stryeyz to work so I could have her car for the day.

After getting the boys to school I unloaded the car of my tools then headed to my first appointment with a new client. And HOLY SHIT! She is in the Old Trails fire zone which burned RIGHT UP TO THE BACK OF HER HOUSE! Her water feature got torched and was a first for me to see one that had been damaged like this.

The pump plastic parts had been melted, the exposed pvc melted, and the pond liner had holes all along it where it melted as well.

All the bushes are toast, all her rose bushes are gone, and even the valve box had melted. I had to pry the top off to see the ball valve inside which seemed okay sine it is metal.

Thankfully the feature has no concrete in it so I will be able to rebuild it for her but it will require removing all the rock, installing felt, then a whole new pond liner before putting the rock back in place.

All the big Ponderosa pines have been cut down and I will likely haul off the rounds that remain. She wants weed fabric laid down on all the terraces and I will mention to her that I can help her with the replanting come Spring time. I told her I will get her a bid for the cost to rebuild the feature and install the weed fabric. She wants to have the feature done before Thanksgiving so hopefully I can begin the process next week.

This is across the street from her still standing home. The house below her had the siding paint melted and peeling, the fire was THAT close! Just incredible to see. The tree services are actively working in the neighborhood still.

After a stop at the bank to get cash for the car I stopped to pickup @stryeyz and we went to lunch at Olive Garden. Nice to have enough time to do so. After I sat in her work's parking lot and made a couple callbacks for more work. I set them up for Monday and one is to build a 20x20 metal carport which I will work on in the afternoon.

I then drove down to the south hill and purchased my vehicle. It is a 2006 Subaru Outback in really quite good condition. I paid for the car then drove up to pick @stryeyz up then we drove back down and I drove the car home. It does have a thing in the front right wheel area that causes the steering wheel to shake which feels like a ball joint or cv joint. There is a rubbing sound on right turns.

I got home just before the boys got off the later than normal bus ride due to a break down of a bus and loaded all my tools in the car. I pushed the shitty dead car out to by the boat where it will stay until I sell it for scrap most likely.

I am going to end up getting the car into Tire-rama for an alignment at which time I will have them see what is causing the shake and likely have them fix it for me as they will need to before the alignment can be done. Hopefully next week.

My client Michelle needed me for a couple things so I ended up heading up to her place by 4pm where I got the poles installed on her deck and then strung the LED light string up so she will have light in her hot tub.

Sunrise, Tub Caulking Job, Stair Repair Job, Car Shopping - Monday

Being without wheels right now I had to take @stryeyz to work yesterday morning so I could use the car for my jobs for the day. The sunrise was looking killer already as we headed into her work before 7am.

Then it turned AMAZING as I was heading back home. The color was so intense as the clouds were lit orange and red. I got home and then took the boys to school then got my tools all loaded up in the car.

My first job was a pretty quick one up on 5 Mile. The caulking where the tub meets the floor needed to be replaced on the master bath. I removed the old and cleaned both surfaces well with alcohol and vacuumed up all the dust and debris. I then laid down a nice bead along the joint and smoothed it out with a gloved finger. The tenant has a 15 month old and they use the master bath tub for his baths so I wanted to make sure it was going to handle any splashes and spill overs. I was done in time head down to Home Depot to buy the plumbing parts for my next job then was able to head back home for about 45 minutes and shovel food in my mouth and get the lumber and my chainsaw loaded for the next job.

I got to my client's house at 12:30, half an hour early, and quickly got the old board removed and the new board installed on the bottom step of the stairs. I will likely help them figure out something for the whole stair setup as a number of boards are decaying or have pulled loose. It is about 40 stairs like this though so could be a rather big job to do. That will be for next year most likely. I was supposed to replace the front hose bib for them but they had not gotten back by 1:15 so I called and scheduled that task for Friday.

I then went and picked @stryeyz up from work and we headed to the valley to check out a car at a tiny dealer due south of the rental we had when we first moved to Spokane. The Outback was okay but during my inspection of it I noticed the bottom of the motor was covered in fairly fresh looking oil and there was a squeal in the belt area that I didn't like. We thanked them and then headed up to Deer Park to the dealership where they have another 06 Outback but it has head gasket issues which is NOT what I want. They rummaged in their system for anything on the cheaper side that might work but we found nothing suitable. I was a bit, no a LOT frustrated.

So we sat and looked online once home. There was a few things on Marketplace but I eventually found THIS 06 Outback on Craigslist that had a phone number listed with the ad. I texted and got a reply with the VIN and some of the service records. The head gasket had been replaced by Parker Subaru, one of the larger dealers in the region, a few years back! Also service records of maintenance over the past few years which was wonderful. I am going to go check it out today and hopefully be able to come home with it this afternoon or evening.

I will get her to work in a bit, then the boys to school, then go to my session, then my job for today is to check out a water feature that went through the Old Trails fire this summer and melted the pvc and the pump. I need to see if the pond liner got melted anywhere and likely come up with a plan and parts list for what it will take to repair or rebuild the feature. Thankfully it is not a concreted feature so the rebuild is more possible. Then I go to check out the car and I sincerely hope to buy it so I have something far more dependable. I'm SO SO SO tired of mechanics on vehicles after my truck and the shitty sled.

Grain Run, Sunrise, Utd, Ring Install, New Client, Shitty Dead Car - Sunday

It was after 6am when I was on the road yesterday morning headed to town to pickup grain. Not a ton of people on the road made the trip pretty mellow.

The twilight was nifty looking to the east.

Had 3.5 barrels waiting for me which I loaded up into the trailer.

It took about 10 minutes to load them and I was headed for home.

The grain got shoveled out to the sheep pen where they stood and watched until I was done.

I got to see the last bit of the match as it was obvious Utd shit the bed yet again as they should have. This is NOT their year for sure.

I then went to put water in the shitty car and found it just draining out the weep hole in the water pump. So I tossed tools and my ladder in the only good car we have to go to my quick job for the morning.

I installed the Ring camera and wired it into the door bell which was quite easy and fast. I then installed a new LED light right above it in the ceiling of the front entrance. I told Thanh that she can get in touch if she needs anything else which she did over the day. I will be going by once a month to pull weeds in the front yard, she will want a center island put in the kitchen later, and then this week I will go install a dash cam in her car. I LOVE jobs like this that lead to regular clients.

Once home my day was spent taking the garbage car apart. I got down to the water pump and then went and got a new one to install. I followed the Factory Service Manual to get the timing belt back on and once it was all back together the fucking thing refused to start. AND I found that is was now pissing oil out from the passenger side... Furious is far too gentle of a word to express my state of mind...

We went looking and found there are a couple Outbacks that are for sale in the region so this afternoon we are going to go look at one and hopefully I will be driving it home. I can't be without wheels trying to make my business work and I know Outbacks pretty well. I will then be able to sell the shit car off, along with the old Toyota truck and then can save money to get my Tacoma fixed by someone else this winter.

I am beyond done with dealing with vehicle issues, it has become the bane of my existence and a constant source of frustration and anger. To have something actually reliable will be beyond nice, it will give my head a chance to mellow out and relax and think more about my business.

So I will take @stryeyz to work soon, then the boys to school, then I will go to my first job to caulk a couple bathtubs where they meet the floors for a client, then I will get parts for the next job which is removing a frost free spigot and replacing it with a valve in the wall inside and then galvanized out to a normal hose bib as the frost free leaks like a sieve. Then I will pickup @stryeyz and we will drive down to the valley to see the Outback and possibly get it which I could then drive home and have real wheels for the first time in years.

Quick Job, Sapphires, Lunch, Trailer, Greenhouse - Saturday

Yesterday morning I headed up to my client's again to finish the few things we forgot about on Friday. I hung this picture in her stairwell before helping move boxes of books down the stairs and then got into the loft of her shed to get down her Halloween decorations. It was only a half hour or so that I was there and made it home not long after 10am.

The mail delivered our first 2 cut sapphires from Helena. These were cut in house while we still have 5 more that are much smaller and got shipped overseas for cutting. Those still have a month or more before we will get them back. Now we just need to get the handful of rough ones we have cut as well. These are really nice looking for sure so am anxious for the roughs to get cut.

WE all went up to Deer Park to have lunch at Master's Brewhouse with my mom. It was a good 2 hours of talking and eating and reconnecting while the boys played pool and arcade games. Starting the process slowly and trying to figure out the next steps to the rekindling.

After stopping at the store for some things we were home and I got the trailer hooked up for the grain run I have done already this morning.

I then went to the greenhouse and pulled the plastic and rolled the irrigation lines to finish it for the season. I still have some rows in the garden that need to get pulled then button up the garden for the season as well. Still trying to decide on the garlic for this planting...

Been to town for the grain and emptied the trailer this morning. I have a job at 10 am to install a Ring camera, then have to hit Home Depot to get parts for a hose bib rework I have Monday afternoon. We will probably go for a family bike ride up to the lake today,

18.76 Mile Freezing Group Ride, Shelves/Art/Shut Down First Job, Art Hanging/Assembly/Shelves Second Job - Friday

I was up at 4am yesterday morning and was out the door a little after 5am for our last Friday group ride of the year. It was 29F and rather cold. It was 6 of us and we headed out north. This pic was taken by Bryan and I am the front yellow jacket.

My jacket was great and nice and warm but HOLY FUCK were my fingers and toes ice blocks. I managed to keep up pretty well even going up the insane Half Moon hill. As we headed south on Austin the sunrise twilight was AMAZING.

By the time I got back to my car my toes were numb despite wearing much thicker socks. My bike shoes are NOT made for cold in any way. I was lucky I could drive home with numb feet.

I was home in time to get R to school as @stryeyz took J to school as it was Pastries with Grandparents morning for him.

My pedal balance has improved a little bit and was not near as off balance as other rides by a few percentage points.

I was able to slowly warm up as I got ready then headed up to my first job at 9am. My toes finally stopped being numb by 9:30 or so. I had a pair of shelves to mount in the kitchen and laundry room.

I put together the shelving and moved it into place, hung a few pieces of art, shut down the irrigation, restrung the weedeater, and helped Michelle with her hot tub cleaning and draining start. It was her first time having to clean and drain as she was away a lot and wasn't able to keep up on the chlorine. We forgot to do a couple things so I am heading back up this morning for a bit.

I got home and had about 45 minutes to shovel some food in my face and setup another job for Monday afternoon before I had to leave for my 1pm job over looking Indian Trail area. Vinnay had a bunch of art to hang which after mounting the first piece I used the distance between the top of it and the ceiling as my guide for the rest. That way they all had the same top level to make the eye not get drawn around funky. Lots of measuring and leveling got the 11 pieces up nicely. I assembled a table for behind their couch then got 4 small shelves mounted to the walls. He and his wife were pleased with how it all came out and it was a bit after 4pm when I left to head home in the shitty Friday afternoon traffic.

Today I am up early again but I will be heading back up to Michelle's at 9am to hang a few more pieces of art and help to get boxes down from a loft as her shoulder is messed up. Then we are all going to lunch in Deer Park to try and rekindle life involving my mother. It's a long and very convoluted story that I will not layout here, the goal is to try and start fresh and move forward.

This afternoon I have to work around the property and decide on if I will plant garlic or not. I want to but am not looking forward to the process of preparing the soil and doing the planting work... My business has taken much time this year that I would have devoted to that project. The house needs serious work on cleaning and organizing in hopes of making it presentable to have friends over finally. The garden needs to be finished up, paperwork done for my quarterly for my business, and the 4 runner did not work out so I am stuck with this shitty fucking car still.

Latch/Hole/Deck Job, Heater, Kraken, Hawks - Thursday

Yesterday I had to stop and buy the latch on my way to my job at the rental house downtown. I then installed it once there so the french door would stay closed. The chain just held them together but they could just push open together otherwise.

Then I used my extension grabber to hold the steel wool which got crammed into the hole in the bottom back of the 2" wide slot next to the kitchen cabinets. I then globbed wood glue on a piece I cut to size and covered over the steel wool with it. Better keep the mice out now!

Then I went all around the TREX decking and fixed the gaps between ends, snugged the clips all down, added clips, and fixed the outer boards to hold them in place better.

I added more screws to the stairs to make them more solid and then also reattached the bottom of the railing which can just be seen in the middle left of the pic. I'm trying to make sure I can get all the issues fixed for the property managers since they are not local and rely on tenants/renters to inform them of issues.

Once home I got the heater setup in the plunge pool so it isn't going to freeze and be just under 60F for the winter. It's a 500w aquarium heater so we will see how well it does.

I went and picked up J after his last cross country practice which was their finale party day. The Kraken were already playing and they ended up losing in OT though they did get a point for the tie at end of regulation.

The Seahawks REALLY need to bench their quarterback and bring in the backup who did amazing the games he played. Darnold is shit this year and is nowhere near the level he should be after they won the stuperbowl last year.

This morning I have been on my group ride and HOLY SHIT my toes are just now getting feeling back an hour later! SO COLD. It was an 18.75 mile ride and I kept up a bit better this time. Boys are to school already, I will be going to one of my main client's house this morning to shutdown irrigation, install shelves, and show her how to clean and drain her hot tub. Then this afternoon I will go to another job to install shelves, hang pictures, and likely more.

Threshold/Gate/Cameras Job, 4 Runner, Session and Dinner Date - Wednesday

Yesterday morning I headed north to one of my client's house to take care of a few tasks for him. The first was to replace the threshold on his garage door which at first I was unsure how long it would take but to my surprise it was a super fast swap. I only had to pull the right side door stop trim piece loose and the old one popped right out and after sweeping dirt away the new one slid right in. It actually surprised me how easy it was.

Then Mike gave me a 2x4 which I cut down to size then fixed the gate boards to it. I had reworked the gate once but this time the new cross pieces made it much more solid. I got it mounted and had to pound a 2x4 piece in against the hinge post to try and tilt it back a bit to better line the cross pieces with the fence pieces. The latch catches correctly and it swings nice and easy.

I then worked with him to install 3 Blink cameras on his garage and a new doorbell camera. He had gotten them all synced with the app while I was working so we were able to see the view through each before I mounted them.

I've seen the 4 Runner sitting in the exact same spot since my first time to his house and this time we got to talking about how he is wanting to work on selling it. I expressed my interest as I need wheels for winter and a vehicle that is not eating oil and water constantly. It was his Father In Law's who babied the motor. The thing is a 1986 4x4 with a 22 motor in it. The inside is not the greatest condition but that is irrelevant to me. He has no idea what it would be worth but after getting home and looking around I have an idea of an offer. I will hit him up and see about going back up to check it out more, maybe this weekend. It has 176k miles but for a 40 year old Toyota that is really not bad. My old 94 Toyota truck in the yard has good tires that would swap over and be great for winter driving.

In the afternoon I picked R up after STEM then futzed around the property for a while before @stryeyz got home then we went to our couple's session which was good. Then we went to Mango Tree for some super delicious Indian food. The mango poutine was delicious.

Then my mango chicken salad was equally tasty. The buttered naan is badass.

I woke this morning to a new job lead sent at 4:15am, replied by 5:10 and picked it up for Monday morning to caulk the bathtub/floor junction in a rental house on 5 Mile. I will get the boys to school in a while then mid day I have a job back downtown at the rental I was at last week to take care of the deck TREX boards that have loosened, fill a hole in the kitchen wall with steel wool and foam over it, and install a latch on old French doors upstairs to lock the one side closed.

Tub Spigot Job, Utd SUCK, Fungus Everywhere, Last XC Meet, Kraken, Bird In House - Tuesday

Yesterday morning after getting the boys to school I headed to my weekly session which was good and I had a couple good realizations that should help with what will be happening Saturday. After I headed down to my job for the day which was a bath tub spigot replacement. The house is for sale and is empty which made it super mellow.

I popped the old spigot off which THANKFULLY had a standard 1/2" copper stub to work with that ended up being the exact right length. No cutting needed.

Off to Home Depot I went in north Spokane and I picked up the replacement trying to match the color of the old as close as possible. Brushed nickel was the only option that worked as the others were chrome and black. I got the new one installed easily and it worked first try. The owner was very pleased and I was offered reno jobs if I had a crew... but that is a bit much for just me. I really like my business as it is now.

Got home in time to watch the abortion of a match Utd played against Athletico Madrid where they of course lost. Dumb shits got a red card ejection in the 2nd half which lead to the guaranteed loss. Worst start to a season for them in decades... Lol.

I had gone out to get the Amazon deliveries and then went back around the property once I hauled them in to see the vast numbers of mushrooms that are exploding all over. This one is HUGE!

Others are nearly as big. Amanitas I think... Still need to id them.

These ones looked more like possibly edible, like giant button mushrooms that are in the stores with the black gills and smooth white tops.

R got home from school then half an hour later we headed the 6 miles south to J's last cross country meet.

Varsity girls ran first then Varsity boys. It was much faster than prior meets as there were no slower runners and they all came in closer together.

J ran his PR for the mile and a half at 10:35. He was last in the varsity run but that mattered not at all as he cares only about his personal time and not his place. One of the great things with him is his view on running being a personal competition and not a placement competition. It makes the effort MUCH less pressure for him and he is always in a good mood after. We don't put ANY pressure on him for placement and are just very happy he runs for himself.

Weather, 19 Mile Bike Ride, Xmas Display, Tomatoes, Greenhouse Shutdown, Jobs - Monday

Our micro climate of the farm seems to be keeping the temps far warmer than the expected lows. Yesterday morning it was supposed to be 32F but ended up at 40F. This morning was to be 25F and is at 30-31F.

I got the boys to school then when it had warmed some more mid morning I headed out on a ride. It tried to ride the sunnier routes but even then it was a bit chilly with the north winds.

The biggest Christmas display in our area is looking to be largely setup already. I get why they start so early as they have TONS of things to setup over the month.

It was a good ride and I got my average speed up a bit over my standard 15. It helps having some days off between burns.

It's interesting to me that my IF is almost always in the 0.8xx range, kinda regardless what the ride is.

Early afternoon I was in the greenhouse and picked all the good tomatoes from the plants to take inside the house to ripen in paper bags, which I will put them in today.

Then I ripped out all of the plants except a single lanky sun gold cherry. I figured I would see how it fared over night then if it survived I will pop off some of the leads and bring them in the house to grow over winter.

Still will have to pull some weeds before I can clean then pull the plastic. I rolled the side down for the night.

Picked J up from practice then headed out to cover the celery row for the night in case it DID get as cold as forecast. The rest of the week is mellow so will likely keep it uncovered. Will need to harvest and figure out where the hell it will all go.

Over the day I managed to setup a job for each day this week and Monday of next. 2 new clients and then 3 repeat clients. This is EXACTLY what I have wanted... a group of clients that will have work for me every so often. I don't need to have work every day but even 2-3 a week is great. Thumbtack keeps working really well and providing me new clients quite regularly.

Today I will get the boys to school, then I have my weekly session, then a tub spout replacement job in town that I will have to go get the new spout from Home Depot most likely, then this afternoon is J's last cross country meet of the season. Still oodles to do around the property but with mellow temps this week I will likely get some done each day between my scheduled stuff.
