A Year of Plans, Surprises, and Unexpected Growth

It's been a year of so many planned and yet a year of so many unexpected. Like how do you plan so much but still face a lot of unexpected situations? It's been my story since the beginning of this year, from one surprise to another even in the midst of my many plans. Is it a good thing? A big YES, am I still hoping for more surprises? Yes!

There are so many notables in this year that I'd love to share but I'll share the most important ones which came to me more like a surprise and in a good way. First of all, I'd love to say here that I am grateful for how far I've come into the year, especially for the fact that I didn't just live through it but actually live it more intentionally.

At the beginning of the year, I got my first surprises, to be a mentee to someone who would help me discover more about myself both online and offline. And another not so much of a surprise after was gaining certificates on some skills I had been putting time and efforts into. I started to explore a world I didn't know existed.

Months into the year, I started different personal challenges that have been paying off for me more than I imagined before I started them. One of them, I did it here on Hive and it brought out more of my consistency strength. I also got to put myself out there online and it brought people and friends to my space than I had expected.

I also got to read a lot of books than I ever did since my childhood or my university days (studying to pass exams). Not just any kind of books, they were books that opened my eyes to different aspects of life, from communication to storytelling to finance and time management. I still got a lot to cover but I'm ahead of my target.

Another notable moment I got this year is the graduation of my sister and a small promotion for my brother where he schools, I can not even emphasise how proud my two siblings make me feel whenever I think about them. For the fact that they didn't fall sick as much and didn't bring in much complain about life, it is very notable.

One more notables for me of this year is that, I got a commitment that I decided to do, it has opened me up to new environment, new learnings, criticisms that have helped me learn faster and do better on what is expected of me, meet new people and exercise my communication skills. I'll say this is the best part.

I am still looking forward to what the rest of the year will bring to me, especially from this present commitment I'm on. I'm also hoping to meet more new people, learn more from my mentors and grow on a new path I've recently found and started walking on even though it feels unclear. I pray all work out together for my good and for all.

Choosing Action Over Reaction

A lot of people will wait until something happens before they can respond or react. A friend of mine once said that "you do not have to wait until it starts to rain before you fix your roof, you need to fix it while the sun is still shining." This is why you have to choose action over reaction. You have to understand that you are the driver of your life, not a passer-by or a passenger. You do not have to wait for something to happen first before you can react. Which means you have to be in a proactive mode, not a reactive mode. More often than not, things may not happen the way you want it until you have taken a step to make it happen by your actions. Your actions should set a precedence for what you want to see. Be proactive, not reactive.

While I was in school, there was a particular organisation I worked briefly with during one of the vacations. It was a media and publicity firm. There was a time that a software glitch happened on a Friday morning, which wiped out some data from the server, and it affected two departments. But something happened that taught me a lesson even though it did not affect my own department directly. A client sent a message by Friday evening that they are coming by Monday morning by 10:00am to collect some campaign data. The two Heads of Department that were affected got the message. The first one started panicking, blaming the IT people for the software glitch, and all.

She came to work on Monday morning by 7:30am visibly upset, she went to the IT department, but they were busy trying to resolve the issue. She hoped they would resolve it before 10:00am, but they could not. When the client came, she met him and explained what happened, and told him that she will send the data once they fix it. The client was so angry and disappointed. But the other department made something different. Their Head of Department did not want to solely put their hope on the IT fixing the issue, so he assembled his team over the weekend, and they pulled a former request by the client. With that, they were able to make a sketchy graphic of what the client might want. He took it to the client and explained that they had technical glitch but he was able to fix up another design. The client was impressed by his quick thinking and proceeded with it. You see, the same situation, but one was proactive while the other was reactive.

Being proactive changes a lot of things because it flips the formula. Instead of waiting for the world to come right to you, you can move to the world instead. You do not wait for circumstances to dictate your life, neither do you wait for the kind of change you want to come. Rather you take up actions and create the kind of change that you want. You have to understand that you are the one who holds the steering to the wheel of your life. When you have this mentality, you will stop being a victim of your environment, and start creating your own path.

Being proactive changes the way you think and speak. Reactive people would say something like "there was nothing I could do," "I did not have any choice," "this is how I was built," "they made me angry," and so on. These statements show lack of control, and also show that you are not on top of your game. But a proactive person would say something like "let me explore the options available," "I will determine how to respond to this," "I can change a couple of things." Just to tell you, a proactive person will focus their time and energy on the things that they can change, instead of wasting their energy on the things that they do not have any control of.

It is worthy to note that being proactive is not what you do once in a while, you have to practice it daily. For example, at home, in your place of work, you should not wait to be told what to do, you can think out a solution even before problems grow. In your relationship for example, you do not have to wait until your partner apologises or says kind words, you can lead the way by showing kindness and leading the way. So you see, in each day, you should be proactive and not reactive.

Short Story Writing Prompt of the Week

This week's prompt is: "Rude awakening."

“Rude awakening” is an expression for a sudden and often unpleasant realization that things are not as easy. Or a person might have a sudden awareness that there is a cumbersome glitch in plans. Or perhaps a letter, email or text arrives that delivers a "slap-in-the-face" message that the receiver was not expecting.

A "rude awakening" can be literal — for example, a person might wake up abruptly to an alarming sound, unexpected visitor, or dangerous situation. But more often the rude awakening is symbolic. It is the moment when reality shatters someone’s expectations. A new employee might discover that a dream job is a nightmare. A traveler might learn that an idyllic destination isn’t what it seemed. A person who felt confident in a relationship might suddenly realize their feelings aren’t reciprocated, or that the simple, easy happiness they believed in is just a layer on top of a very complicated truth.

Blue Prairie Skies

I've done this drive so many times...

And I've taken a lot of pictures from the front seat of my truck every time I travel across the 'Palliser's Triangle' - Google that ;)

But every time I do, there seems to be something new that captures my attention.

The first picture was the start of my trip in southern Alberta. The clear morning skies really popped, and the Rocky Mountains in the background, just made it a great start to the drive.

The second and third pictures are along Highway 1 in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Blue skies, rolling hills and crisp air made the drive so nice.

But wait....What's in that 4th picture?

*Is that snow and ice....Already in Canada? *

Nope...That's actually salt. And the final picture is a mountain of salt near Chaplain Saskatchewan. Apparently it's a pretty big industry in the middle of the prairies with lots of small salt lakes in the 'triangle'.

I'm in Regina tomorrow and than onto Manitoba in the middle of the week...

Just like in real life, not everything we do (in any field) can receive the recognition it deserves without connections with other people. Within this blockchain ecosystem, things would be no different. Without a path built on the foundation of frequent interactions, it is quite unlikely that we will receive the long-awaited recognition from other users. Therefore, it is necessary to establish networking that is truly sustainable.

Although there is no “recipe” for how this should be done, there are some patterns that help us get there in a more functional way. Far beyond simply publishing great content, we need to make sure that this material reaches other people’s eyes. We therefore need to start exploring the ecosystem, and take advantage of everything it can offer us. Communities, projects, groups for promoting posts... This is just the beginning.

Amid all these efforts to disseminate our own content, everything ends up converging with interactions between one user and another. This ends up branching out the interactions, because once everyone starts exchanging ideas more frequently, it is very likely that other users will end up observing what is happening. Without even realizing it, we are being seen more broadly, and becoming more recognized.

Our connections also end up saying a lot (sometimes much more than we imagine) about who we are here, and a great deal about what we are building. This is a kind of bridge that should never be burned, except in the event of something that truly justifies such an action. We should seek not only new bridges, but also strengthen everything that has already been built up to this point. Good coexistence (amid so many differences) becomes a factor of great value.

This proves that the plural essence of this project is collective, because although it is built through individual actions, there is no way for them to remain within a “bubble” because everything that is done here has a direct impact (even if with different weights) on all of us. There are no exceptions. At first, I thought that concepts from diplomacy were somewhat exaggerated to be applied here... But the more time passes, the more they become something essential.

**Pavimenta tu camino con buenas conexiones.**

Al igual que en la vida real, no todo lo que hacemos (en cualquier ámbito) logra tener el debido reconocimiento sin que haya conexiones con otras personas. Dentro de este ecosistema de la blockchain, las cosas no serían diferentes. Sin que haya un camino construido a base de interacciones frecuentes, es bastante improbable que haya el tan esperado reconocimiento por parte de los demás usuarios. Por lo tanto, es necesario establecer un networking que sea muy sostenible.

Aunque no haya ninguna “receta” sobre cómo debe hacerse, hay algunos patrones que nos ayudan a llegar hasta allí de una manera más funcional. Mucho más allá de publicar buenos contenidos en sí, es necesario hacer que este material llegue a los ojos de otras personas. Es necesario entonces comenzar a explorar el ecosistema, y aprovechar todo lo que puede ofrecernos. Comunidades, proyectos, grupos para promover la difusión de posts... Esto es apenas un comienzo.

En medio de todos estos movimientos en la búsqueda de la difusión del propio contenido, todo termina encontrándose con las interacciones de un usuario con otro usuario. Esto termina ramificando las interacciones, porque una vez que todos comienzan a intercambiar ideas con más frecuencia, es muy probable que otros usuarios terminen observando lo que sigue sucediendo. Sin siquiera darnos cuenta, estamos siendo vistos con mayor amplitud, y siendo más reconocidos.

Nuestras conexiones terminan diciendo también mucho (a veces mucho más de lo que imaginamos) sobre quiénes somos por aquí, y mucho de lo que estamos construyendo. Este es un tipo de puente que nunca debe quemarse, con excepción de algún evento que realmente justifique esta acción. Debemos buscar no solo nuevos puentes, sino fortalecer todo lo que ya se ha construido hasta entonces. La buena convivencia (en medio de tantas divergencias) se convierte en un factor de gran valor.
